Worldwide, stomach cancer (also referred to as gastric cancer) remains one of the most common forms of cancer, affecting approximately 800,000 new individuals annually. However, the rate of stomach cancer has been declining in the United States and western Europe over the past half-century, a trend which has been felt attributable in large part to changes in diet during this period of time. Interestingly, the incidence of cancers located in different portions of the stomach appear to be heading in opposite directions: while those located in the more distal (lower) portion of the stomach have been declining in incidence, there has actually been an increase in cases occurring in the proximal portion of the stomach (closer to the esophagus) and at the gastroesophageal junction (where the esophagus meets the stomach). Print this Page Incidence and mortality rates for stomach cancer in Canada are among the lowest in the world, with declining rates being seen in both sexes since the turn of the century. In Canada, rates are highest in Newfoundland (with diets traditionally high in salted and cured foods) and low in British Columbia. Although the overall incidence of stomach cancer is decreasing, there has been a rise in the incidence of proximal and gastroesophageal junction cancers. Dietary risk factors are important in this disease. Risk is reduced with the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, and increased with higher nitrate consumption from pickled, salted, and cured foods. Refrigeration and improved food preservation (with less conversion of nitrates to carcinogenic nitrites) have contributed to the decline in incidence of stomach cancer. Other risk factors are associated with either upper or lower stomach cancer. Family history and infection with Helicobacter pylori bacteria are associated with lower stomach cancer; whereas alcohol, smoking and hiatal hernia are associated with upper stomach cancer. Familial syndromes such as hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer, Li-Frameni , familial adnomatous polyposis and Peutz-Jeghers syndrome can all be associated with gastric cancer. Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) is a rare disorder, probably only accounting for 1-3% of gastric cancers. HDGC is transmitted in an autosomal dominant pattern and the penetrance is 60-80%. The BCCA is involved in research on HDGC.

Of the many diseases that affect people these days, cancer is among the most feared. But despite a wealth of scientific data, most people remain unaware of how they can reduce their risk of developing cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, as much as 80 percent of all cancers are due to identified factors, and thus are potentially preventable. Thirty percent are due to tobacco use, and as much as 35 to 50 percent are due to foods. It is easy to control these and other risk factors. What Is Cancer? inhibitors can keep the cells from growing. Some vitamins in plant foods are known to be inhibitors. Dietary fat, on the other hand, is known to be a promoter that helps the abnormal cells grow quickly. Fiber Fights Cancer In 1970, British physician, Dennis Burkitt, observed that a high-fiber diet reduces diseases of the digestive tract. He observed that in countries where diets are high in fiber (that is, plant-based diets), there were fewer cases of colon cancer. Around the world, this has proven true. The highest fiber intakes are found in non-industrialized nations where meat is scarce and plant foods fill the menu. Animal products contain no fiber. The U.S. and other Western nations whose diets are based upon animal products have the highest rates of colon cancer. While no one is certain exactly how fiber protects against digestive tract disorders, there are several possibilities. By definition, fiber cannot be digested by humans early in the digestive process. It moves food more quickly through the intestines, helping to eliminate carcinogens. It also draws water into the digestive tract. The water and fiber make fecal matter bulkier, so carcinogens are diluted.

Stomach Cancer What is stomach cancer? Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer , is cancer that starts in any part of the stomach. The stomach is just one of many organs located in the abdomen , the area of the body between the chest and the pelvis. Among other organs found in the abdomen are the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and colon. It is important to differentiate among these organs, because cancers and other diseases that occur in them have different symptoms and are treated differently.

GASTRIC (STOMACH) CANCER
Stomach cancer, or gastric cancer, starts in the stomach, one part of the digestive system. It is the seventh most frequent cause of cancer death in the United States. Every year, about 24,000 people in the States are diagnosed with the cancer. To reduce the risk of stomach cancer, people should avoid diets that are high in smoked and pickled foods and salted meats and fish. A diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables can also lower stomach cancer risk Stomach cancer in Minnesota and risk factors Stomach cancer can be hard to find early. Often there are no symptoms in the early stages and, in many cases, the cancer has spread before it is found. When symptoms do occur, they are not specific and often so vague that the person ignores them. Stomach cancer can cause the following: abdominal pain; a sense of fullness in the upper abdomen, just below the chest bone after eating a small meal; heartburn, indigestion or ulcer-type symptoms; nausea; vomiting, with or without blood; and/or swelling of the abdomen due to accumulation of fluid and cancer cells. When any of the symptoms occurs, doctors should be seen. They can tell if they are caused by cancer or other kinds of benign diseases.

What is gastric cancer?
Most cancers of the stomach are adenocarcinomas , a type of cancer that develops in the mucosal cells that form the innermost lining of the stomach. Other types of stomach cancers include lymphomas and sarcomas . Stomach cancer can be hard to detect early. Often there are no symptoms in the early stages and, in many cases, the cancer has spread before it is found. As the disease progresses, the cancer may invade the stomach wall and/or metastasize (spread to other parts of the body).
How many people get gastric cancer?
Although the rate of stomach cancer in this country has declined substantially, it is still the seventh most frequent cause of cancer mortality. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2003, about 22,400 new cases will be diagnosed in the United States, and 12,100 people will die of the disease. Most people diagnosed with stomach cancer are in their 60s and 70s.

RODENTS and people may not appear to be closely related, but consider this the next time you look in a mirror: the genes of human beings and mice are 85 percent identical. This similarity is one of the reasons Lawrence Livermore scientists are studying mice. At Livermore's Human Genome Center, biomedical scientist Lisa Stubbs is leading a team that is studying the mouse genome to better understand the functions of human genes. Comparative genomics-analyzing and comparing the genetic material of different species-is viewed by bioscientists as an important method for studying evolution, the functions of genes (what they do and why), and inherited diseases. Hunting Down Damaged Chromosomes
To find out which gene is responsible, a researcher takes a small snip of skin from a mouse tail and grows the skin cells in a petri dish. Chromosomes from those cells are then spread on a microscope slide. In the laboratory, the researchers look for one particular kind of mutation called a translocation, which involves obvious changes in chromosome structure. Because the chromosomes are visibly disrupted, researchers can easily map the position of the mutated gene using only a simple light microscope. For example, the figure at right shows two mouse chromosomes-2 and 14-where such a translocation has occurred. "We knew immediately that the gene responsible for the trait would be found on one of those two chromosomes," Stubbs explains.
The researchers then use a procedure called fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), a technique for painting chromosomes with a fluorescent dye, to pinpoint the gene's location. They label a gene from a normal chromosome 2 with the fluorescent dye and add it to a slide containing the mutant mouse chromosomes. The labeled gene probe recognizes DNA sequences spread over the slide that are identical to its own and binds to the chromosome at that site. "In this way," Stubbs says, "we can map any gene relative to the translocation and `trap' the mutated gene in a small, well-defined region."

ECCO 11 Highlights: Simple blood tests for stomach cancer A simple blood test may help to identify people at future risk from stomach cancer, the world's second most common fatal malignancy. According to David Forman, Professor of Cancer Epidemiology at the University of Leeds, UK, there is "persuasive evidence" from various studies linking Helicobacter pylori infection to stomach cancer. Professor Forman stated, "A recent meta-analysis shows that these are now consistent in showing an approximate three to sixfold increased risk of non-cardia stomach cancer in H. pylori positive individuals (Eur J Cancer 2001; 37 Supp. 6: 248). This indicates that at least half of all non-cardia cancer can be attributed to the infection. Apart from smoking, very few established causes of cancer have been associated with an attributable risk of this magnitude.”
In the past decade research has established that up to 90% of gastritis and ulcers are caused not by stress or acid, but by H. pylori

The Fresh Guide to St Petersburg
Folk Medicine
Russians, unlike Westerners, have not been spoiled by conveniently packaged cures for headaches, fevers, itches, and other minor ailments or by highly developed treatments for more complicated diseases. Though Russian scientists are among the most brilliant in the world, they have had to deal with a total lack of supplies and appallingly low levels of funding for practical work. Consequently the field of medicine here is, with a few rare exceptions, several decades behind the West. The further one goes out of the big city the more the field of medicine resembles the snake venom and witch chants of auld. Folk medicine is still a Russian institution and many people who cannot afford expensive Western medicines turn to traditional cures when they are suffering. While we cannot vouch for any of the following treatments they have been in practice here for years, so who knows - there just may be something to them.
AILMENT TREATMENT Cancer Take one teaspoon of lighter fluid and one tablespoon of butter two hours before breakfast daily for two months, then take a break for one month before repeating Cough Before going to bed have a glass of hot beer.
