How is strep throat treated? How contagious is it? ... Is there any way I can prevent strep? My child seems to have a sore throat; what are the chances that it's a strep throat?
About one in 10. The first place to look for clues is inside your child's mouth. Are his tonsils swollen, bright red, flecked with white? These are the clearest and most common signatures of infection by the streptococcus bacteria. A fever above 101 degrees F, chills, and a noticeable swelling and soreness of the glands in the neck just under the jaw are also warning signs. A bad cold or the flu can cause such symptoms, too, and they often show up at the same time of year, between October and April. But a strep throat usually lasts longer than a plain old sore one. If it looks bad in there, and lasts for more than a couple of days, call a doctor. Does my child need to see a doctor right away?

Strep Throat What is strep throat? What are the signs of strep throat?
Strep throat is an infection caused by bacteria. It is called "strep" because the bacteria that causes the infection is called streptococcus. Children with strep throat have a sore throat and may have tummy pain or a red rash with small spots. The rash is worse under the arms and in skin creases. How is strep throat treated? Your doctor may give you or your child an antibiotic. Antibiotics kill bacteria, which helps strep throat go away a little faster. It can also prevent a few rare but serious conditions that people with strep throat might get. It is important to take all of the medicine your doctor gives you. Should all sore throats be treated with antibiotics? No. Not every sore throat is strep throat. Bacteria only cause about 5% to 10% of sore throats. The rest are caused by viruses or other problems, and antibiotics will not help. Your doctor can do a test to make sure it is strep throat. What tests can tell I have strep throat?

Strep Throat Infection
DESCRIPTION (Diagnosis must be confirmed by a physician.)
Your child has a strep throat infection. It has been diagnosed with a throat culture or rapid strep test. The treatment of strep throat can prevent some rare but serious complications: namely, rheumatic fever (a disease that affects the heart) or glomerulonephritis (a disease that affects the kidneys). In addition, with treatment the fever and much of the sore throat are usually gone within 24 hours.
HOME TREATMENT
  • Antibiotics Your child needs the antibiotic prescribed by your physician. Try not to forget any of the doses. If your child goes to school or a baby sitter, arrange for someone to give the midafternoon dose. If the medicine is a liquid, store the antibiotic in the refrigerator and use a measuring spoon to be sure that you give the right amount. Your child should take the medicine until all the pills are gone or the bottle is empty. Even though your child will feel better in a few days, give the antibiotic for 10 days to keep the strep throat from flaring up again. A long-acting penicillin (Bicillin) injection can be given if your child will not take oral medicines or if it will be impossible for you to give the medicine regularly. (Note: If given correctly, the oral antibiotic works just as rapidly and effectively as a shot.)

    FACTS ABOUT
    Strep Throat
Strep throat is an infection caused by the Streptococcus pyogenes (strep) bacteria. The infection is more common in children than in adults. Children with strep throat often have a fever and complain of a sore throat, headache and stomach-ache. They may also have swollen, tender glands in the neck, or sores around the nose. Scarlet fever, a rare form of strep infection, is characterized by a sore throat, more general symptoms, such as fatigue, and a red rash on the body that feels like sandpaper. Some children can get very serious complications, such as rheumatic fever, if the infection is not treated completely with antibiotics. The strep bacteria are found in an infected person's saliva. The infection spreads through the air when the infected person talks, coughs or sneezes. The spread of infection can be stopped by treating the infected person with an antibiotic. It is difficult to diagnose strep throat just by looking at the throat. The physician has to take a culture (or swab) of the throat to see if strep bacteria are present. If strep throat is diagnosed, the physician will prescribe an antibiotic, usually penicillin. This medication comes in the form of a pill, a liquid or an injection. If treatment is begun soon after the infection has started, the child will feel better very soon. This treatment may also prevent the serious complication that can result from strep throat. Things Parents Can Do
    • Watch your child for signs of strep throat if another child has it.

strep throat By Eileen McLaughlin, RN, BSN Images (click to view larger image) Strep throat is an infection of the pharynx caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes. The pharynx is the part of the throat between the tonsils and the larynx, or voice box. What is going on in the body? Strep throat is the most common of the many infections that are caused by group A streptococci , or GAS. The bacteria that causes strep throat makes a toxin that results in an infection in the throat and tonsils. A person can develop symptoms of strep throat from 1 to 6 days after being exposed to the bacteria. Symptoms in up to 40% of children may be too mild to diagnosis. Up to 20% of school-aged children may be carriers of the bacteria. These children will show no symptoms but can transmit strep throat to others. A sore throat accompanied by fever is caused by a virus 70% of the time. Without treatment, uncomplicated viral infections usually subside within 3 to 10 days after onset. Strep throat is more significant because of the increased incidence of complications. What are the signs and symptoms of the disease?

STREP THROAT What is Strep Throat? Sore throats are one of the most common reasons children are seen by a doctor. "Strep throat" is a bacterial throat infection caused by Group A Streptococcus, and is the only form of a sore throat that requires antibiotic treatment. In fact, roughly 80% of all throat infections are actually caused by viruses and resolve without antibiotic treatment. The only way to know if your child (or yourself) has strep throat is to do a rapid strep test or a throat culture . Doctors cannot accurately diagnose strep in all cases by examination of the throat only. Some of the worst appearing throat infections are caused by viruses, not strep, and can make children quite ill. What are the symptoms of Strep throat? · Fever · Headache · Sore throat · Stomach ache (often with vomiting) · Absence of congestion, cough, conjunctivitis or diarrhea

Though streptococci are the most common bacterial causes of repiratory infections, strep infections are much less common than viral respiratory infections ( colds ), which may have similar symptoms. Strep throat is most common in winter and spring. Children with strep throat also may develop a skin rash known as scarlet fever HOW DOES STREP THROAT DEVELOP? Strep bacteria spread from person to person in droplets expelled during coughing and sneezing. Usually, however, close contact, such as sharing eating utensils or playing face-to-face, is needed for the bacteria to spread. Outbreaks of strep throat can occur in communities, day care centers, schools and families. WHEN SHOULD I SUSPECT THAT MY CHILD HAS STREP THROAT?
