All nine studies included in the review had at least 300 participants, used throat culture as the gold standard for the diagnosis of strep throat and made available information about the history and physical examinations. The variables that were best able to discriminate between patients with and patients without strep throat were the presence of pharyngeal or tonsillar exudate, fever, enlarged tonsils, lymphadenopathy and absence of cough. The presence of a tonsillar exudate had a likelihood ratio of 3.4; pharyngeal exudate had a likelihood ratio of 2.1. Known strep throat exposure within the past two weeks had a likelihood ratio of 1.9. However, ruling out disease in the absence of physical and historical findings was difficult.

Definition
Streptococcal sore throat , or strep throat as it is more commonly called, is an infection of the mucous membranes lining the pharynx. Sometimes the tonsils are also infected ( tonsillitis ). The disease is caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria. Untreated strep throat may develop into rheumatic fever or other serious conditions. Description Strep throat accounts for between 5-10% of all sore throats. Although anyone can get strep throat, it is most common in school-age children. People who smoke, who are fatigued, run down, or who live in damp, crowded conditions are also more likely to become infected. Children under age two and adults who are not around children are less likely to get the disease. Strep throat occurs most frequently from November to April. The disease passes directly from person to person by coughing, sneezing, and close contact. Very occasionally the disease is passed through food, when a food handler infected with strep throat accidentally contaminates food by coughing or sneezing. Statistically, if someone in the household is infected, one out of every four other household members may get strep throat within two to seven days. Causes and symptoms A person with strep throat suddenly develops a painful sore throat one to five days after being exposed to the streptococcus bacteria. The

Strep Throat Group A Streptococcus is one of the most significant pathogens responsible for illnesses such as tonsillitis and pharyngitis in young adults. Early diagnosis and treatment result in more rapid resolution of the symptoms of the infection and help to prevent further complications such as rheumatic fever or acute glomerulonephritis. The lab employs two methods to detect Group A Strep. One test is a Strep A culture. The other is a Rapid Strep test that can give a result within minutes. Consultation with a Health Center care provider is required in order for you to be properly diagnosed with this infection. More Information: Sore Throat

Strep Throat Strep throat is an infection of the throat by the streptococcus bacteria. Strep throat is very contagious and is spread through person to person contact. Symptoms usually occur within 2 to 7 days after exposure. If untreated, this throat infection can lead to serious lifelong problems. Strep throat is most common in children aged 5 to 10. It occurs most often between October and April. The bacteria may be present in some people without causing symptoms, but can still be spread to others. These individuals are called carriers, and up to 20% of school children may be carriers. Pets may also be carriers. Symptoms may include:

Tuesday, December 12, 2000 Strep throat bacteria vaccine developed by U researchers Mickie Barg Staff Reporter Strep throat, toxic shock and flesh-eating disease are only a few of the ailments caused by Group A streptococcus bacteria. Each year, strep throat alone accounts for 10 percent to 30 percent of general medicine office calls, with millions of people getting sore throats checked and receiving antibiotic prescriptions. A patented vaccine developed at the University could end this ordeal. University researchers and Pennsylvania-based Wyeth-Ayerst laboratories, a division of American Home Products, are focusing on a protein on the strep bacteria which suppresses the immune response needed to combat disease. The protein is common in several different diseases. Normally, when a bacteria invades the body a signal is sent for disease-fighting cells to surround, engulf and digest the microorganism.

Strep Throat If you're feeling fine one moment, then suddenly your throat is killing you, you're running a high fever, and all your energy has vanished in a haze of illness, you probably have strep throat. "Strep," in this case, stands for Streptococcus pyogenes, a common strain of bacteria that can live in your throat and nose for months without causing any harm. Tests show that about 18 percent of healthy people have the strep bug living uneventfully in their mouths or throats. Once in a while, however, these bugs turn ugly on you. Maybe you've been under too much stress , or your immune system has been overtaxed with fighting a virus such as a common cold or the flu . Or perhaps you've picked up a bug from an infected person. Whatever the reason, the normally quiet strep organism can suddenly start spewing out toxins and inflammatory substances to bring on the sore throat and other symptoms. Although strep throat feels awful, it can be cured easily these days with antibiotics such as penicillin or erythromycin. In fact, one of the biggest problems with it is getting people to seek treatment. Because a fever and sore throat are also symptoms of colds and the flu, strep throat is often mistaken for these ailments. But colds and flu normally take several days to develop, and most of the time they are accompanied by a

Typical symptoms of strep throat, or Group A streptococcal infection, in a child above age three include: rather sudden onset of a sore throat and fever, without symptoms typical of a cold/upper respiratory infection (such as runny nose, cough, etc.), headache, mild stomach pain and nausea (usually from swallowing the infected mucus) and a sandpaper-type rash. Some vomiting may occur, but usually not more than one or two times. Hoarseness, redness of the eyes and diarrhea are distinctly unusual and may be signs that your child has a viral or other illness. Upon examining the throat, it is usually beefy red, and the tonsils are red, swollen and usually covered with a whitish/yellow to green material (called "exudate"). There are often one or two enlarged, tender lymph nodes on either side of the neck below the jaw. Strep throat can also occur in children under three, typically presenting with greenish, often foul-smelling drainage from the nose, with skin irritation or sores at the nasal opening. These kids may also have large tender lymph nodes throughout the neck. Strep throat is most common in children five to eight years of age. While good handwashing and avoidance of sharing items that go in the mouth will help prevent infection, this bacterium is quite contagious and transmission is related to close contact typical of the age group. Parents who suspect their children have strep throat should contact their physician.

What Is Strep Throat?

A sore, scratchy throat is often the first sign you're getting sick. In fact, it's one of the most common reasons people see a doctor. Some sore throats, such as those that accompany a cold or the flu, are caused by viral infections and usually go away on their own in a few days. But others are caused by bacterial infections and typically require medical treatment.
Strep throat is a bacterial throat infection. It occurs most commonly in children between the ages of 6 and 12. In addition to a very sore throat, symptoms typically include a fever and swollen lymph glands. Younger children may even complain of abdominal pain. If your child has these symptoms, see your pediatrician. A quick test can diagnose strep throat in most cases.
If not treated, some strep throat infections may lead to complications such as rheumatic fever. This serious disease can cause painful and inflamed joints and a skin rash. In more than half of all cases, rheumatic fever also may damage the heart valves and interfere with normal blood flow in your child's heart. There's no cure for rheumatic fever. But it can be prevented by promptly treating infections such as strep throat with antibiotics.

Annals of Emergency Medicine , the peer-reviewed journal of the American College of Emergency Physicians, finds that strep throat can be diagnosed while patients wait. Another study documents a severe withdrawal syndrome caused by discontinuing use of a body-building supplement. Canadian investigators examine adverse drug reactions and potential adverse drug interactions among the elderly presenting to an emergency department. Embargoed copies of the articles are available from the Washington office of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
Study Finds Throat Cultures Not Necessary for Diagnosing Strep Throat
A new study finds that strep throat, a respiratory tract infection, can be diagnosed while a patient waits in a physician's office or an emergency department. If a patient exhibited three or four clinical symptoms such as fever, no cough, inflamed throat, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck, the rapid antigen test was more than 90-percent accurate, researchers found. (The Relationship Between the Clinical Features of Pharyngitis and the Sensitivity of a Rapid Antigen Test: Evidence of Spectrum Bias) While the standard practice has been to confirm negative rapid antigen tests with a throat swab culture, which takes 24 to 48 hours to produce results, this study indicates that throat culture confirmation may no longer be necessary. This means patients will receive a faster diagnosis and can begin treatment immediately.

This is known as Scarlet Fever . The rash should disappear with antibiotic treatment. A throat culture or rapid strep slide test at the doctor's office is used to diagnose strep throat. Treatment can prevent rare but serious complications like rheumatic fever (heart disease) or glomerulonephritis (kidney disease). A sore throat may be caused by anything that irritates the sensitive mucous membranes at the back of the throat. Some irritants include viral and bacterial infections, allergic reactions , dust, smoke, fumes, hot foods or drinks, tooth or gum infections, abrasions. Hoarseness is considered a side effect. Strep throat is caused by streptococcus and is characterized by inflammation and fever . In degrees of soreness, this one beats them all, with the exception of diphtheria possibly.

    Treatment
In the case of severe sore throat, a doctor should determine the cause and treatment. Most often, only a throat culture can rule out strep throat, and antibiotics should be prescribed by the doctor for this condition. Liquid vitamin C or fruit juices should be sipped, trickled down throat slowly. Sea salt in warm water should be gargled every few hours. Drink plenty of liquids, including fresh juices if possible. Raw honey and lemon juice is good. Eat yogurt if taking antibiotics. Get plenty of rest.
