Managing Traumatic Stress: Tips for Recovering From Disasters and Other Traumatic Events
The September 11th terrorist attacks were the type of events we thought could never happen. Like other types of disasters they were unexpected, sudden and overwhelming. In some cases, there are no outwardly visible signs of physical injury, but there is nonetheless a serious emotional toll. It is common for people who have experienced traumatic situations to have very strong emotional reactions. Understanding normal responses to these abnormal events can aid you in coping effectively with your feelings, thoughts, and behaviors, and help you along the path to recovery.
What happens to people after a disaster or other traumatic event?

How do people respond differently over time?

How should I help myself and my family?

How do I take care of children's special needs?

How may I use APA as a resource?

What happens to people after a disaster or other traumatic event?

Shock and denial are typical responses to terrorism, disasters and other kinds of trauma, especially shortly after the event. Both shock and denial are normal protective reactions.

Stress-Related Problems
Adjustment Disorders
Adjustment Disorders are reactions to stress that have lasted less than six months. The types of reactions can be very different, sadness, anxiousness, anger, or a combination of all. Adjustment Disorders become apparent within three months of some stress in a child's life. During such times, it is common for a child's schoolwork to suffer. Again, if a child has always (or for a year or more) shown the symptoms and had poor school achievement, the problem is not an Adjustment Disorder. Parents' divorce, a death or serious illness in the family, or being in an automobile accident are all typical of the stressful events which cause Adjustment Disorders in children. A child who has experienced such stress may appear normal for a month or so, then change. The difficulty with such reactions is that just when everyone else is ready to forget the painful event, this child begins to show that he or she is still in turmoil about it.
What To Do
Usually, Adjustment Disorders are solved by good communication. Sometimes the family can provide this healing talk. Talk to the child about their feelings about the death, or divorce, or whatever. Follow the principles in HELP for Parents, Active Listening , in talking with the child.

Coping with Holiday Stress: Advice from Psychologist Dorothy Cantor, Psy.D.
"The anticipation of the holiday season begins with Christmas decorations going up around Halloween. It is no wonder that people who expect to have the perfect holiday are set up for feeling stressed out over the holidays," said psychologist Dorothy Cantor, Psy.D., a private practitioner in Westfield, N.J., and a former president of the American Psychological Association . "A person will get very disappointed if he or she expects to get along with everyone in the family that historically doesn't get along, just because it is the holiday season. Pegging the holidays as a magical time for curing all past problems is not being realistic and will get you into trouble."
How Can You Deal With Continuing Family Problems During The Holidays?
Being realistic is the first step. "If you have bad feelings about someone, try and avoid him or her and not make an issue of it but don't pretend that all is well. This will enable you to feel true to yourself and less stressed out."

T he American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress is a multidisciplinary network of professionals who are committed to the advancement of intervention for survivors of trauma. The Academy aims to identify expertise among professionals, across disciplines, and to provide meaningful standards for those who work regularly with survivors. Today, our international membership includes individuals from over 200 professions in the health-related fields, emergency services, criminal justice, forensics, law and education. With members in every state of the United States and over 40 foreign countries, our association is the largest organization of its kind in the world. The Academy defines traumatic stress as, “the emotional, cognitive and behavioral experience of individuals who are exposed to, or who witness, events that overwhelm their coping and problem-solving capabilities.” Our mission is to increase awareness of the effects of these traumatic events and, ultimately, to improve the quality of intervention with survivors. Traumatic stress has many "faces.” In addition to the devastating effects of large-scale disasters and catastrophes, the Academy is committed to fostering a greater appreciation of the effects of day-to-day traumatic experiences (e.g., chronic illness, accidents, domestic violence and loss). Our aim is to help all victims to become survivors and, ultimately, thrivers.
