23. Why We Have Become Suicide Bombers - Understanding Palestinian Terror
A psychiatrist's analysis of why Palestinians have turned to suicide bombing tactics.

In the Name of Allah - the Most Beneficent - the Most Merciful
- Understanding Palestinian Terror
By Dr. Eyad Sarraj

A few weeks ago I said that the struggle of Palestinians today is how not to become a bomb and that the amazing thing is not the occurrence of the suicide bombing, rather the rarity of them. The BBC interviewer appeared to understand. I was shocked because it is our understanding that the world out there will never understand. And who on earth in their right mind would understand terror and the killing of innocent people? Why do Palestinians kill themselves and Israelis in such an horrific way at the bus stop or in a crowded market? Do you really care to know? Well, let me try and explain. I believe it is an act of absolute despair and a very serious stage of the seemingly perpetual conflict. Since the uprooting of the Palestinians in 1948 triggered by Irgun Jewish terror under the leadership of Yitzak Shamir and Menachem Begin, we have tried everything. We have tried Nasser and Arab Nationalism, only to be invaded in 1956 in our second homes in the refugee camps. It was only because of the Russian threat to bomb London and Paris, and the resolve of American president Eisenhower that ended the Israeli occupation. We have tried the United Nations and its Security Council, which by the way have made excellent resolutions on our behalf. For example Resolution 194 calling on Israel to allow us to return to our homeland, but to no avail. So we kept wandering around, between airports and refugee camps, waiting for a hero or an earthquake. All we wanted was to go home. But our story was getting worse and we grew bitter as we heard that a Jew from Poland would be declared a citizen of our country

24. Suicide Is Painless
Celebrates the rights of life and death. Poetry and personal stories.
http://www.geocities.com/whatyouown13/
SUICIDE IS PAINLESS Some say that suicide is the ultimate in selfishness, and I agree. The pain and anguish it causes in the loved ones who remain is so great. Suicide is the embodiement of selfishness, but is the right of the individual. Just as we all have the right to life, so do we have the right to death.
We all have been through wars. Internal, External it matters not. We have the scars - physical and emotional. We won. Whether individually we chose to live or die, that fact that we acknowledge that it is Our choice. We can chose, and we do chose. I do not say chose life. I do not say chose death. I say Chose. Welcome to the meaning.
A Site Dedicated to preserving the Web Sites of the deceased.
Why the title "Suicide is Painless"?
The title of this site is the name of the theme song from MASH, the television series based on a med unit in the Korean war. The lyrics are not used in the series however. It shocked me when I learned that that was the title of that song. It seemed a inappropriate theme song for a show about saving lives. But it is. The more I thought about it, however, the less inappropriate it sounded. The song talks about choosing death, but those in wars do not choose to die. Especially those who never wanted to be involved in the first place. The doctors of MASH tried to fufill their patients rights to live, but with the right to live comes the right to die. Perhaps it is a fitting counterpoint that the unsung lyrics to the MASH theme song honor that right.

New album: "American Supreme"
Release date: 28 October 2002 Legendary New York duo Suicide (Alan Vega and Martin Rev) are set to release a brand new album, their first for 10 years, on Mute's Blast First label on 28th October " American Supreme ", their fifth studio album and the long awaited follow up to ‘92's " Why Be Blue ", features 11 new tracks recorded over the last 12 months in New York. The album carries the distinctive Suicide Televised Executions ' sees them mix up DJ scratching and funk guitar samples and from then they're relentlessly driven by Marty Rev's digital electronic funk noise on tracks such as ' Beggin' For Miracles Wrong Decisions ' and ' Power Au Go-Go '. There's the techno influenced ' Death Machine ', the hall of mirrors sound of ' Dachau, Disney, Disco ' and the beautiful, haunting electro pulse of ' Misery Train ' and ' Child, It's a New World '. Vega's voice has never sounded better, reaching new heights in expressing his paranoid, sci-fi visions of contemporary street life, with a maturity that invokes the crooners of his pre-teen youth. Accepted by many as one of the most innovative and influential acts ever, Alan Vega and Martin Rev emerged in 1976 at CBGB's, the heart of the New York punk scene. They released their truly original eponymous debut album in 1977 on Marty Thau's Red Star label and to coincide, toured the UK for the first time as special guests of The Clash. Punk audiences were just not ready for their harsh electronic music and most live shows ended after 10 minutes in near riots. The follow up "

Women May Not Drive a Car, but Can Blow Themselves Up:
AJCONGRESS CONDEMNS SAUDI RELIGIOUS DECREE
THAT WOMEN CAN SERVE AS SUICIDE BOMBERS;
CALLS ON RELIGIOUS LEADERS TO SPEAK OUT IN OPPOSITION
(August 7, 2001) American Jewish Congress Executive Director Phil Baum today called on Muslim and non-Muslim religious leaders to condemn the decree of the Saudi Arabia High Islamic Council that women can serve as suicide bombers. The full text of his statement is as follows: Saudi Arabia is so protective of its women that it requires them to be garbed from head to toe and severely restricts the kind of education they can receive and the work they can do. Women are not permitted to drive a car, but the Saudis now have declared that it is perfectly acceptable for women to blow themselves up as suicide bombers. The Saudi High Islamic Council gave its approval last week for women to become agents of death; already, a 23-year-old Palestinian mother of two was seized by Israeli security last week as she brought explosives to Tel Aviv's central bus station. Apparently, when it comes to killing Jews, nothing is off limits to segments of the Muslim world. With this edict, it is not enough for Muslim mothers to encourage their children to be suicide bombers and upon their death to praise them for their heroic and noble action; now, in addition, they are called upon themselves to set an example for their children.

A Typical Example of Death of Choice, and Confusion of the Laws Concerning This
Velma Howard, aged 76, knew her life was coming to an end. Lou Gehrig's Disease was taking away the use of her limbs one by one. Eventually it would affect her throat and she would be in danger of choking on her own saliva. This elderly, respectable, Middle American decided on rational suicide. The consequences of her decision resulted in an emotional ordeal for her family and a legal muddle typical of the mess in which America's laws on assisted death currently are. Read more ...
Assisted Suicide Laws Around the World
Assisted suicide laws around the world are clear in some nations but unclear - if they exist at all - in others. Just because a country has not defined its criminal code on this specific action does not mean all assisters will go free. It is a complicated state of affairs. For example, it is correct that Sweden has no law specifically proscribing assisted suicide. Instead the prosecutors might charge an assister with manslaughter - and do. In 1979 the Swedish right-to-die leader Berit Hedeby went to prison for a year for helping a man with MS to die.

Describes risk factors, symptoms and warning signs of suicide in adolescents/teens.TEEN suicide. Each year in the US, thousands of teenagers commit suicide.
http://www.aacap.org/publications/factsfam/suicide.htm
T EEN S UICIDE No. 10 (Updated 11/98) S uicides among young people nationwide have increased dramatically in recent years. Each year in the U.S., thousands of teenagers commit suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15-to-24-year-olds, and the sixth leading cause of death for 5-to-14-year-olds. Teenagers experience strong feelings of stress, confusion, self-doubt, pressure to succeed, financial uncertainty, and other fears while growing up. For some teenagers, divorce, the formation of a new family with step-parents and step-siblings, or moving to a new community can be very unsettling and can intensify self-doubts. In some cases, suicide appears to be a "solution." Depression and suicidal feelings are treatable mental disorders. The child or adolescent needs to have his or her illness recognized and diagnosed, and appropriate treatment plans developed. When parents are in doubt whether their child has a serious problem, a psychiatric examination can be very helpful. Many of the symptoms of suicidal feelings are similar to those of depression. Parents should be aware of the following signs of adolescents who may try to kill themselves:
  • change in eating and sleeping habits
  • withdrawal from friends, family, and regular activities

Ethical Issues in Terminal Health Care
This series of articles originally appeared in The Senior Reporter in the spring and summer of 1992. I want to especially thank Larry Fortner, former editor of the Duluth News-Tribune and editor/publisher of The Senior Reporter, for having given me the opportunity to research first-hand and in depth this sensitive and critical issue. With his guidance and suggested contacts, I was able to gain a far deeper understanding of these important issues and their complexity.
I want also to thank all of the local doctors, nurses and professionals here in the Northland who allowed me to probe their souls for this series. It was an immensely rewarding experience.
I was asked to explore the subject matter utilizing an unbiased, journalistic approach for the first four articles. This approach greatly aided my understanding as I could "hear the heart" in a way one does not through mere reading. In the fifth, I was permitted to express my personal views... after coming to an understanding of what I was addressing.
While working on the series I discovered the power of the wired, online world and initiated several discussion threads on AOL to uncover new angles and anecdotes for my writing. This resulted in my being invited to submit to Truth Seeker magazine an article which distilled the essence of nearly two years of thinking on the matter of physician assisted suicide.

He said Carr, 63, probably will serve another 12 months, including credit for the time she has been held without bond. "Carol Carr could not bring herself to walk into that courtroom and say 'I murdered my children.' All she did was keep a promise to them to end their suffering," Sexton said.

Suicide in the United States The Problem
  • Suicide took the lives of 29,199 Americans in 1999.
More people die from suicide than from homicide. In 1999, there were 1.7 times as many suicides as homicides.
Overall, suicide is the 11th leading cause of death for all Americans, and is the third leading cause of death for young people aged 15-24.
Males are four times more likely to die from suicide than are females. However, females are more likely to attempt suicide than are males. 1999, white males accounted for 72% of all suicides. Together, white males and white females accounted for over 90% of all suicides. However, during the period from 1979-1992, suicide rates for Native Americans (a category that includes American Indians and Alaska Natives) were about 1.5 times the national rates. There was a disproportionate number of suicides among young male Native Americans during this period, as males 15-24 accounted for 64% of all suicides by Native Americans. Suicide rates are generally higher than the national average in the western states and lower in the eastern and midwestern states.
