sunburn By James Broomfield, MD Images (click to view larger image) A sunburn is an inflammation of the skin as a result of overexposure to the sun. The sun's ultraviolet rays destroy the outer layer of skin cells and the tiny blood vessels underneath and cause a burn. What are the signs and symptoms of the injury? Most sunburns will appear a few hours after sun exposure. The most intense symptoms may not occur for as long as 24 hours afterward. The following symptoms occur most commonly: red, warm, tender skin blistering of the skin, which indicates a second-degree burn swelling of the skin chills nausea , or rash peeling of the skin What are the causes and risks of the injury? The ultraviolet rays from the sun destroy the outer layer of skin cells, causing a sunburn. Risk factors that increase a person's chance of sunburn include the following: fair skin high altitude living near the equator wind reflections from snow, sand, and water What can be done to prevent the injury? The best prevention is to avoid sun exposure during the peak hours between 10 A.M. and 4 P.M. For those who want to tan their skin, particularly fair-skinned people, sun exposure should be limited to 15 minutes on the first day, then increased gradually. Measures to avoid sunburn include the following: avoiding sunbathing, including indoor tanning facilities

Caring for a Sunburn More Body Care Solutions by Annie Berthold-Bond Care2.com Producer, Green Living Channels Getting a blistering sunburn significantly increases our risk of developing a serious type of skin cancer called malignant melanoma. Skin cancer usually occurs from a sunburn received during childhood. As the Earth’s ozone layer thins, we are even more vulnerable to ultraviolet (UV) rays that can cause skin cancer.
Simple Solution: Are you at high risk for skin cancer? Take this fun test and score your risk at the University of Missouri-Rolla website. Treating a sunburn quickly and with healing ingredients is important to help reduce the damage and to protect against further damage. Healing Sunburn Treatments Aloe Vera Gel
For sunburn there is nothing better than aloe vera gel; it is antibacterial and deeply healing for burns in part because of aloectin B, which stimulates the immune system. Aloe vera gel is used in hospitals for burn victims. Aloe Vera comes from the aloe vera plant, and the gel may be squeezed from its leaves, or you can buy pure aloe vera gel as a product in most health food stores. Vitamin E Cream
One of the antioxidants, vitamin E creams, ointments and oils, can help heal sunburn damage and shorten its effects.

How Sunburns and Sun Tans Work
by Marshall Brain
There is something mysterious about the sun and skin. Why is it that if you go out on a bright summer day and spend an hour in the sun, you get a sunburn? You get a sunburn, that is, unless you happen to have taken the time to get a nice gradual tan. With a nice tan you can go out in the sun and nothing happens. Of course, that doesn't apply if you have "fair skin". The fair skinned among us never get a tan, so they always get sunburned. Unless of course they are wearing a sunscreen... Does this make sense? What the heck is a sunscreen? And what is a tan? What is the difference between a tan and a burn? Why can you spread a little blob of lotion on yourself and be protected, but if you forget you are miserable? If you take the time to look at skin and sunlight in some detail, all of this actually does begin to make sense. You can learn a huge amount about your body in the process. So that's what we'll do in this edition of How Stuff Works!

Sunburn 13 Tips to Cool the Fire

    A Rodale Press contribution
Oh, those dog (and cat) days of summer! Pets delight in sunny romps, and invariably they play, dig, scratch and snooze in the brightest patch of sunlight they can find. Sometimes, however, they get too much of a good thing. The result can be sunburn on the tips of their ears, the bridge of their noses and even on their tender tummies, where fur is thinnest. At the very least, sunburned skin is sore, painful skin. "One of the dangers with sunburn and long-term sun exposure in dogs and cats is that it can develop into cancer," adds Lowell Ackerman, D.V.M., Ph.D., a veterinary dermatologist in private practice in Scottsdale, Arizona, and author of Skin and Haircoat Problems in Dogs White pets are most susceptible to sunburn, as are those with fair skin and sparse fur, says Carin Smith, D.V.M., a veterinary consultant in private practice in Leavenworth, Washington, and author of 101 Training Tips for Your Cat . In addition, pets that live at high altitudes near the Rocky Mountains, for example are more likely to burn than those that live at lower elevations.

Dietary protection against sunburn (with recipe)
Janet Raloff Nothing tastes more like summer, to this inveterate gardener, than a home-grown, vine-ripened tomato. As a child, on a sweltering August afternoon, I used to swipe one from our garden to nibble slowly in the backyard. Or I’d share a bright red Beefsteak with mom. Slathered with mayonnaise and nestled on a bed of lettuce between slices of bread, it made a great summer sandwich.
But never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that tomatoes might offer summertime health benefits to a sunburn-prone towhead like me. Yet that’s just what a European research team reports this month in the Journal of Nutrition . The catch: Such benefits depend on cooking the tomatoes or their juice before eating them. Tomatoes derive their rich color from carotenoids—beta-carotene, lutein, and especially lycopene. The last of these is an especially potent antioxidant, able to quench biologically damaging free radicals. These molecular fragments are spawned by natural processes, disease, and a number of environmental insults—including overexposure to the sun.

    11.02 Sunburn
Presentaion: Patients generally seek help only if their sunburn is severe. There will be a history of extended exposure to sunlight or to an artificial source of ultraviolet radiation, such as a sunlamp. The burns will be accompanied by intense pain and the patient will not be able to tolerate anything touching the skin. There may be systemic complaints that include nausea, chills, and fever. The affected areas are erythematous and are accompanied by mild edema. The more severe the burn, the earlier it will appear and the more likely it will progress to edema and blistering.
    What to do:
    • Inquire as to whether or not the patient is using a photosensitizing drug (e.g., tetracyclines, thiazides, sulfonamides, phenothiazines) and have the patient discontinue its use.
    • Have the patient apply cool compresses of water or Burow's solution (Domeboro Powder Packets-1 pkt in 1 pint of water) as often as desired to relieve pain. This is the most comforting therapy.
    • The patient may be helped by applying a topical steroid spray such as dexamethasone (Decaspray) and using an emollient such as Lubriderm.

    Sunburn
Almost all Australians will have experienced a painful dose of sunburn at some stage in their lives. In fact an average of 5.6 million Australians get sunburnt every summer.
Sunburn is your skin's reaction to ultraviolet radiation or 'UV'. Step outside without any form of protection, and UV (both UVA and UVB) will immediately start to penetrate deep into the layers of your skin. UVA penetrates deeper into the skin, affecting the living skin cells that lie under your skin's surface. It is these rays that cause longer-term damage like wrinkles, blotchiness, sagging and discoloration while also laying the ground work for future cases of skin cancer. Damaged skin cells will self-destruct and peel off in tatty sheets. Although peeling is unsightly, it is actually your body's way of getting rid of damaged skin cells that could potentially develop into cancers. All types of sunburn, whether serious or mild, can cause permanent and irreversible skin damage. Further sunburn only increases your risk of developing skin cancer.

    Sunburn and skin cancer
Skin cancer has reached epidemic proportions in Australia. Currently one in two Australians will develop the disease at some stage during their lives. There are three reasons why our levels of skin cancer are so high; our mainly fair-skinned population, Australia's harsh climate and our love for the great outdoors. Sunburn is not the only cause of skin cancer. Tanning or just too much sun, year after year, can also lead to people developing the disease. Skin cancer is very easy to prevent and can be treated successfully in 95% of cases if detected early. Dermatitis due to excessive exposure to the actinic rays of the sun. Complication of sunburn is sunstroke. Sunstroke is an acute and dangerous reaction to heat exposure.
      Causes
Over-exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun or in a tanning salon. Often falling asleep while sunbathing. The amount of exposure that will cause a burn depends on the individual, the place, the time, and the atmospheric conditions. Avoid the sun when the ultraviolet rays are at their strongest, between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Reflections from water, metal, sand, or snow may double the amount of rays absorbed. Remember, ultraviolet rays can penetrate clouds, thus burning is possible on hazy or cloudy days. Prevention is the key word here. Never go out in the sun for extended periods without a sunscreen lotion. Be sure the sunscreen lotion is the right percentage of protection for your skin tone.
      Symptoms
Burns are classified in three degrees. A first-degree sunburn reddens the skin. A second-degree sunburn causes reddening of the skin with some water blisters. A third-degree sunburn requires the immediate care of a doctor and causes lower cell damage and the release of fluid, resulting in eruptions and breaks in the skin where bacteria and infection can enter.
