Clinton to apologize for Tuskegee syphilis experiment
April 8, 1997
Web posted at: 11:45 p.m. EDT (0345 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) President Clinton will offer a formal apology for the notorious "Tuskegee experiment," in which black men suffering from syphilis were left untreated for years so the government could study the disease, the White House said Tuesday. The announcement came as four survivors of the experiment met at a church in Notasulga, Alabama, and held a news conference to demand a meeting with Clinton and an apology from the government. There are eight survivors in all, the youngest of whom is 87. The White House did not say whether that affected the president's decision, but a spokeswoman said Clinton would issue the apology soon.
'A blight on our record'
"The president feels it's a blight on our record and it should be rectified," said White House spokeswoman Mary Ellen Glynn. More than 600 African-American men were part of the secret syphilis study conducted in Tuskegee, Alabama, between 1932 and 1972. Nearly 400 had syphilis. Although they thought they were being treated for the sexually transmitted disease, they were getting only placebos. Doctors withheld penicillin, the standard treatment since 1947, so they could study the progress of the disease.

What is syphilis ("sif-i-lis")?
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD). This means that it is a disease that you get by having sex with someone who already has syphilis. Syphilis is caused by bacteria, and can infect the mouth, genital area, or rectum. It also may get into your body through cuts or broken skin. If untreated, syphilis can infect other parts of your body.
What are the signs of syphilis?
The signs of syphilis change as the disease moves from the early to the late stages. The early sign of syphilis is a chancre ("shan-ker") on the body. A chancre is a sore that shows up ten days to three months after sex with an infected person. Chancres can be seen on the part of the body that was exposed to the syphilis such as the penis, vagina, cervix, tongue, or mouth. Some chancres are inside the body, where they cannot be seen. Signs of syphilis include:
  • "Chancres" ("shan-ker"), or sores.

The Truth About Herpes
What is syphilis? Syphilis is a complex sexually transmitted, infectious disease ( STD ) caused by the bacterium Treponema Pallidum. Syphilis is usually transmitted by sexual contact or kissing. Infection from contaminated objects rarely occurs because drying quickly kills the bacterium. A fetus carried by a woman with syphilis may contact the disease. When a fetus has syphilis, the condition is called congenital syphilis. Syphilis has often been called the great imitator because so many of the signs and symptoms are indistinguishable from those of other diseases. How is syphilis spread?

Syphilis is caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum Treponema is a Gram-negative, thin, motile, spiral shaped bacterium in the order Spirochaetales . The name spirochete is derived from the Greek words for "coiled hair." Their spiral cellular shape is approximately 16 to 18 bends consisting of an outer sheath, periplasmic space with periplasmic flagella, and a peptidoglycan layer.
The spirochete Treponema pallidum
Cross section of a spirochete PF=periplasmic flagella OS=outer sheath

The approximate size of Treponema is 10 um X 0.2 um. Therefore, dark field microscopy, which takes advantage of the Tyndall Effect, must be used to observe Treponema cells. The cells can also be observed microscopically after staining with specific anti-treponemal antibodies labeled with florescent dyes. The spirochetes are able to swim in viscous environments (e.g. oral cavity, intestinal tract), but are only able to spin in water due to the lack of friction. Any contact with air, antiseptics, or sunlight will kill the microbe. T. pallidum

Screening for Syphilis RECOMMENDATION Routine serologic screening for syphilis is recommended for all pregnant women and for persons at increased risk of infection (see Clinical Intervention). See Chapter 62 for recommendations on counseling to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. Burden of Suffering
Syphilis is caused by infection with the bacterium Treponema pallidum which can be transmitted congenitally or by sexual contact. In 1994, 20,627 cases of primary and secondary syphilis were reported in the United States.1 The incidence of syphilis has decreased by 50% since 1990, but it is still high and now approximates 1970 rates.1 A growing proportion of cases is being reported among commercial sex workers and persons who use illicit drugs, especially those using crack cocaine and those who exchange sex for drugs.6,7 There are pronounced geographic differences in the incidence of syphilis in different communities. In recent data, nearly all counties with a high incidence of reported syphilis cases (more than 10/100,000 persons) were in large metropolitan areas or in southern states; nearly two thirds of all counties in the U.S. reported no cases of primary or secondary syphilis in the most recent year.1 The incidence of reported infections among Hispanics and blacks is 5-60 times higher than that in non-Hispanic whites.1 Individual communities may experience substantial fluctuations in incidence rates independent of national trends.

05:00 PM Aug. 23, 1999 PT Health officials tracking an outbreak of syphilis cases have followed the bacterium into cyberspace, identifying an Internet chat room as ground zero for infection. Jeffrey Klausner, director of the sexually transmitted disease unit at the San Francisco Department of Health, said investigators quizzing the last seven homosexual men reporting syphilis infections were surprised to find that all seven found their most recent sexual contacts through a chat room on America Online: SFM4M, or San Francisco Men-For-Men.

Today's Top 5 Stories
The outbreak rang alarm bells for Klausner, who noted that venereal diseases like syphilis can boost a person's vulnerability to HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Clearly, the remaining visitors in the SFM4M needed to be warned but how to fight a cyberspace health threat in a chat room where anonymity is prized and people are known only by their online nicknames?

34. Ties That Bind
A new line of ties is sure to stir up great party conversation. Infectious Awareables has created a line of silk and cloth clothing that feature patterns of more than 15 different infectious diseases and bacteria, as seen under a microscope. Tie and underwear patterns include Gonorrhea, Herpes, Ebola, Tuberculosis, AIDS, syphilis, Chlamydia, and Malaria. Its developer, Roger Freeman, a dentist and lecturer on infectious diseases, bought the line, which had problems selling to department stores. The ties are now popular in the scientific and biomedical communities. The Black Plague tie is sold out. Of the Malaria tie, Freeman says, the artist may have been on something when he did that one. Chlamydia Pictures
warning - very graphic What is Chlamydia Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis . Because approximately 75% of women and 50% of men have no symptoms, most people infected with Chlamydia are not aware of their infections and therefore may not seek health care. When diagnosed, Chlamydia can be easily treated and cured. Untreated, Chlamydia can cause severe, costly reproductive and other health problems which include both short- and long-term consequences, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which is the critical link to infertility, and potentially fatal tubal pregnancy. Up to 40% of women with untreated Chlamydia will develop PID. Undiagnosed PID caused by Chlamydia is common. Of those with PID, 20% will become infertile; 18% will experience debilitating, chronic pelvic pain; and 9% will have a life-threatening tubal pregnancy. Tubal pregnancy is the leading cause of first-trimester, pregnancy-related deaths in American women.
