Ulcerative colitis is a disease that causes inflammation and sores, called ulcers, in the top layers of the lining of the large intestine. The inflammation usually occurs in the rectum and lower part of the colon, but it may affect the entire colon. Ulcerative colitis rarely affects the small intestine except for the lower section, called the ileum. Ulcerative colitis may also be called colitis, ileitis, or proctitis. The inflammation makes the colon empty frequently, causing diarrhea. Ulcers form in places where the inflammation has killed colon lining cells; the ulcers bleed and produce pus and mucus.

Ulcerative colitis can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to other intestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and to another type of IBD called Crohn's disease , which differs from ulcerative colitis because it causes inflammation deeper within the intestinal wall. Crohn's disease usually occurs in the small intestine, but it can also occur in the mouth, esophagus, stomach, duodenum, large intestine, appendix, and anus.

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the general name for diseases that cause inflammation in the intestines. Ulcerative colitis can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to other intestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and to another type of IBD called Crohn's disease. Crohn's disease differs from ulcerative colitis because it causes inflammation deeper within the intestinal wall. Crohn's disease usually occurs in the small intestine, but it can also occur in the mouth, esophagus, stomach, duodenum, large intestine, appendix, and anus. Ulcerative colitis occurs most often in people ages 15 to 40, although children and older people sometimes develop the disease. Ulcerative colitis affects men and women equally and appears to run in some families.

Ulcerative Colitis
Case Study, by Leonid M. Katkovsky, MD
Abstract : Active ulcerative colitis may preclude issuance of a medical certificate. An authorization for special issuance can be granted in well-controlled, inactive ulcerative colitis. The medical certificate would be time-limited for a period of 1 year and require that the airman give the FAA a current status of his medical condition at that time.
Background
A year-old first officer of a major commercial airline sub-mitted a new application for a first-class medical certificate. He had a long history of ulcerative colitis, which was quiescent until early January 2000. While in flight training, he developed shortness of breath and tachycardia. His local physician noted a hematocrit of 27 and iron level of 5. The applicant was immediately started on Asacol, Prednisone, Ciprofloxacin, and oral iron. There was a rapid improvement of symptoms. He did not lose any weight. After 2 months of treatment his hematocrit returned to normal. History and physical exam.

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease in which the inner lining of the large intestine (colon or bowel) and rectum become inflamed. Inflammation usually begins in the rectum and lower (sigmoid) intestine and spreads upward to the entire colon. Ulcerative colitis rarely affects the small intestine except for the lower section, the ileum.

Remission Of Crohn's
via Lifestyle Improvement
Synopsis: Crohn's Disease can be put into a controlled remission (if not cured) by a straightforward change in ones lifestyle, including diet. The regimen that I follow is based upon research by Elaine Gottschall, B.A., M.Sc. and is called the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. And I'm not the only onethere are at least 1000 others using this diet in lieu of drugs to heal themselves. Read my story or read Gottschall's book, Breaking The Vicious Cycle This site is a dedication to the success one can obtain using the SCD to cure Crohn's. It is also my personal diatribe about mainstream medicine's desire to deal with Crohn's via surgery and heavy doses of prescription drugs with detrimental long-term effects. Ulcerative Colitis
What is ulcerative colitis?
Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease What is the cause of ulcerative colitis?
Although the precise cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown, one theory maintains that a virus or unusual bacteria interacts with the body's immune system to trigger an inflammatory reaction in the intestinal wall. While scientific evidence shows that people with ulcerative colitis have abnormalities of the immune system, it is not known whether these abnormalities are a cause of the disease or a result of the disease. There is little evidence that ulcerative colitis is caused by emotional distress or sensitivity to certain foods. What are the symptoms of ulcerative colitis?
Since the symptoms associated with ulcerative colitis resemble those of other conditions, the disease is sometimes extremely difficult to diagnose and establishing the correct diagnosis may take some time. Patients experience a wide range of symptoms. About half of patients have only mild symptoms, while others suffer frequent fever, bloody diarrhea, nausea, and severe abdominal cramps. The symptoms that most commonly occur include:
  • Diarrhea
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Anemia
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
Some patients also experience other symptoms, including skin lesions or rashes, joint pain, inflammation of the eyes, jaundice (yellowish skin color), bone loss, kidney stones, and stunted growth.

What is inflammatory bowel disease?
Inflammatory bowel disease is the name given to several similar disorders of the intestine. The main problem is that the lining of the intestine is irritated, tender and easily damaged. When the lining of the small intestine is inflamed and irritated, this is called ileitis or enteritis. When the large intestine (colon) is involved, this is termed colitis. Inflammation of the rectum is called proctitis. Is there more than one kind of inflammation?
There are three patterns which this inflammation may take. In ulcerative colitis, the inflammation usually is confined to part or all of the colon. The second pattern, called Crohn's disease, affects the small intestine and/or the colon. A third type, called proctitis, is a milder form of inflammatory bowel disease in which the disease usually is limited to the rectum. What are the symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease?
