WHAT ARE PEPTIC ULCERS?
A peptic ulcer is an open sore or raw area on the lining of the stomach gastric ulcers ), or on the upper part of the small intestine, which is called the duodenum duodenal ulcers ). They average between one-quarter and one-half inch in diameter. In the US, duodenal ulcers are three times more common than gastric ulcers.
Ulcers develop when digestive juices damage the lining of the stomach or duodenum. Digestive juices, most importantly hydrochloric acid and the enzyme pepsin, are produced by the stomach, intestines, and digestive gland. They break down and digest the starch, fat, and protein in food.
The stomach and duodenum, however, are composed mostly of protein so they can also be damaged by these acids and enzymes. To protect against these powerful substances the body has certain defense systems:
  • The mucous layer, which coats the stomach and duodenum, forms the first line of defense.
  • The body secretes bicarbonate into the mucous layer, which neutralizes the acid.
  • Hormone-like substances called prostaglandins help keep the blood vessels in the stomach dilated, ensuring good blood flow and protecting against injury. (Prostaglandins are also believed to stimulate bicarbonate and mucus production.)

Peptic Ulcers
Stomach ulcers or Peptic Ulcers are caused by the action of stomach acid on the lining of the mucous membranes of the stomach wall. Symptoms vary but can include: a localised gnawing, burning pain, heartburn, local tenderness, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. The pain usually begins just after eating or within twenty minutes of a meal. Heavy drinking, smoking, stress, and taking aspirin may all contribute to the formation of an ulcer. The following complementary therapies may be used in the treatment of the stomach ulcer:
Diet and Nutrition:
Cut down on any acidic forming foods such as coffee, red meat, salt, hot, spicy foods (eg.curries), citrus fruits, vinegar and picked foods, and steer clear of aspirin. Replace with more alkaline foods: lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, rice, lean animal and vegetable proteins. Drink plenty of mineral water to keep your stomach acid at the correct level - at least 8 glasses a day between meals.
Western Herbalism:
Take a decoction of slippery elm (available from health foods shops). This is a demulcent which means it has a soothing effect on the mucous membranes of the gut. Take 1/2 tsp in warm water 4-6 times a day.

Peptic Ulcers There is no clear evidence to suggest that the stress of modern life or a steady diet of fast food causes peptic ulcers, but they are nonetheless common in our society: About 1 out of 10 Americans will suffer from the burning, gnawing abdominal pain of a peptic (or gastric) ulcer sometime in life. Peptic ulcers are holes or breaks in the protective lining of the duodenum (the upper part of the small intestine) or the stomach areas that come into contact with stomach acid and pepsin, a stomach enzyme. Duodenal ulcers are more common than stomach ulcers. Comparatively rare are esophageal ulcers , which form in the esophagus and are often a result of alcohol abuse Duodenal ulcers, whose typical symptoms are recurrent upper abdominal pain and a bloated feeling after eating, are more common in men than women and generally strike between the ages of 40 and 50 years. People between 60 and 70 years old are prime targets for stomach ulcers, whose symptoms are similar to those of duodenal ulcers. Fortunately, peptic ulcers are relatively easy to treat; in many cases they are cured with antibiotics. Still, the dangers associated with peptic ulcers such as

WHAT ARE PEPTIC ULCERS?
The stomach, intestines, and digestive glands produce acid and various enzymes, including pepsin, that break down and digest the starch, fat, and protein in food. The stomach itself is composed mostly of protein and must be protected from the same acid and enzymes, or it too can be attacked and broken down. Ulcers develop when an imbalance occurs between the digestive juices used by the stomach to break down food and the various factors that protect the lining of the stomach and duodenum (the part of the small intestine that adjoins the stomach). A peptic ulcer is an open sore or raw area in the lining of the upper part of the small intestine (duodenal ulcer) or the stomach (gastric ulcer). They average between one-quarter to one-half inch in diameter. In the US, duodenal ulcers are three times more common than gastric ulcers.
The primary digestive juices, hydrochloric acid and pepsin, are powerful substances necessary for breaking food down for use by the body. Acid is always present in the stomach, but, except at meal times, in relatively small amounts. A common misbelief is that excess acid is solely responsible for producing ulcers. Hydrochloric acid, secreted in the stomach, does indeed play a part in the development of ulcers, but it is not the only culprit. Pepsin, the other major digestive fluid, is an enzyme that breaks down whatever proteins are presented to it, including, if exposed, the stomach's own tissues.

What are they?
A peptic ulcer is a crater-like open sore in the lining of parts of the digestive tract. There are two types:
  • Stomach ulcers, also called gastric ulcers, occur in the stomach. Duodenal ulcers occur in the duodenum, the uppermost part of the small intestine near the stomach.
Top of Page
What are the main symptoms?
The classic and most common symptom of peptic ulcers is pain. Ulcer pain is thought to affect at least 70% of people with duodenal ulcers and around 50% of those with stomach ulcers. This pain may:
  • Be a gnawing, burning sensation in the abdomen between the breastbone and navel. Feel like a constant hunger or sensation of pressure in the abdominal area. Range from a mild ache to severe discomfort. Come on after a meal, anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours afterwards. Last anywhere from minutes to hours. Be felt in a wide area, radiating from the abdomen and spreading to the back and sides. Be relieved by eating or taking antacids (e.g. Rennies, Gaviscon or Milk of Magnesia).

Peptic Ulcers
A peptic ulcer is a sore on the lining of the stomach or duodenum (the beginning of the small intestine). This kind of ulcer is common. According to the National Institutes of Health, one in every ten Americans will have an ulcer at some point. Stomach pain can indicate a number of other problems (Read about " Dealing with Heartburn " " GERD ") But the type of pain associated with ulcers has certain distinct characteristics. According to the American Gastroenterological Association:
  • it's like a dull, gnawing ache
  • it comes and goes for several days or weeks
  • it occurs 2 to 3 hours after a meal
  • it occurs in the middle of the night (when the stomach is empty)
  • it's relieved by food
Other symptoms include weight loss, loss of appetite, bloating, burping, nausea, and vomiting. Causes of peptic ulcers Contrary to some long-held beliefs, experts now say that peptic ulcers are not caused by stress or spicy foods. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), the main cause of peptic ulcer is a bacterial infection. Researchers have discovered that a type of bacteria called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a primary cause of peptic ulcers. This bacteria is very common, but most people infected with it do not develop ulcers. We may come into contact with H. pylori through food or water. Basically, the bacteria weakens the stomach's lining, allowing acid to get through, causing irritation and ultimately letting a sore develop.

Peptic Ulcers

Not too long ago, Peptic Ulcers were thought to be caused by stress, spicy foods, plus other risk factors that caused or helped contribute to the condition. For instance, too much coffee, tea, chocolate, smoking and alcohol. Thanks to some Australian Researchers we now know that most Peptic
Ulcers
are actually caused by a bacterial infection. Please be aware that this is relatively new, and some misleading and simply out dated pamphlets that are still in circulation (Save-On Drugs /1992). This bacterial infection is called H. pylori - (Helicobacter pylori) that infects the stomach. This infection is common throughout the world, and Its been suggested that it could of even been acquired as far back as your childhood. Usually, people infected have no symptoms, and develop no problems as a result. However, about 10 to 15 percent of the people infected with H. pylori will eventually develop a peptic ulcer.
There are two types of peptic ulcers: Gastric Ulcers : Occurs in the stomach. This type affects people of all ages, but most frequently affects people our age (55 to 65

In some patients, hemorrhages may occur and appear as black stools (Malaena) or vomiting of blood. Thus bleeding ulcers also cause anemia Treatment is based on drug therapy, rest and diet modification. Dietetic treatment gives symptomatic relief in peptic ulcers. In the majority of uncomplicated cases, drugs play only a secondary role Beware If you are suffering from peptic ulcers beware of the following irritating foods. Mechanically irritating foods are those which increase the peristaltic action because of their coarse, fibrous nature. For example whole grain cereals and skins and seeds of fruits and vegetables.

Peptic Ulcers
Dear Relexology Rex... I am a reflexologist and am treating a woman that has both a gastric ulcer and a doudunal ulcer, also she was diagnosed with h.pylori wich is probably the cause for the ulcers. she was treated with anti-biotics but they didn't help the first time so now she is beenig treated again with anti biotics.
My question is how can I help treat peptic ulcers with reflexology?
Thank you very much,
Liad Schwartz Dear Liad... You are correct in that h-pylori has been theorized to be the bacteria which is the underlying cause of many peptic ulcers ie., gastric -inner wall of the stomach, duodenal - duodenum, these being two of the most common types of peptic ulcers. If your client's ulcer has been determined to be stress related, then reflexology combined with the proper anti-biotics work very well. The areas to concentrate on would be the diaphragm for relaxation and the area related to the location of the ulcers. It would be important to work on them, at first, at least 3 times a week.
Now I am going to go into my teaching and legal mode and suggest that you don't refer to what you are doing as treating someone with a medical condition. This is considered practicing medicine without a license and is illegal.

Peptic ulcers are common: One in 10 Americans develops an ulcer at some time in his or her life. One cause of peptic ulcer is bacterial infection, but some ulcers are caused by long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs), like aspirin and ibuprofen. In a few cases, cancerous tumors in the stomach or pancreas can cause ulcers. Peptic ulcers are not caused by spicy food or stress.

H. pylori infection is common in the United States: About 20 percent of people under 40 years old and half of those over 60 have it. Most infected people, however, do not develop ulcers. Why H. pylori does not cause ulcers in every infected person is not known. Most likely, infection depends on characteristics of the infected person, the type of H. pylori

Peptic ulcer What is a peptic ulcer? A peptic ulcer is a sensitive, raw patch, very much like a mouth ulcer, which forms a break in the lining of the stomach or the duodenum. Gastric ulcers occur in the stomach and duodenal ulcers occur in the duodenum, the first part of the intestine after the stomach. How is an ulcer formed? A very important cause of developing an ulcer is a germ or bacterium called Helicobacter pylori, known as H. pylori. This is found in the lining of the stomach of about half of the adults in Britain and it is now certain that having this germ present makes developing ulcers much more likely. Patients with duodenal ulcer almost always have this germ present and at least 80% of gastric ulcer patients also have it. Medical research is actively investigating why it is that only some people who are infected with the germ get ulcers. Who has an ulcer? Ulcers are common in Britain and men are more prone to suffer than women. About one in ten men and one in fifteen women suffer from an ulcer at some time in their lives, but in most people they heal up with treatment. People who have H. pylori present in the lining of their stomach are far more likely to develop further ulcers and so it is important that they receive treatment to clear this infection. This can usually be done by using a combination of tablets including antibiotics. Ulcers are rare in children and are more likely to occur as people get older. Sometimes peptic ulcers tend to run in families. Another important cause of ulcers is the group of drugs used in the treatment of pain, particularly arthritis and rheumatism, called the Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs). Aspirin is one of this group.

About the Author
Dr. Minocha ( http://www.diagnosishealth.com/minocha.htm ) is the Professor of Medicine and Director, Division of Digestive Diseases at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS, and is the author of How to Stop Heartburn; Simple Ways to Heal Heartburn and Acid Reflux What is peptic ulcer disease (PUD)? The term PUD generally refers to spectrum of disorders that includes gastric ulcer (GU), pyloric channel ulcer, duodenal ulcer (DU) and postoperative ulcers at or near the site of surgical anastomosis.
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
Looking back at history, peptic ulcer was a rare and generally unrecognized as a cause of symptoms/complications or death until the early 19th century. Despite sporadic case reports beginning in late 18th century, Peptic Ulcer Disease did not become widely appreciated until early 20th century. The first 6 decades saw the dominance of surgery in the treatment of peptic ulcer. With the introduction of acid suppressive drugs like histamine-2 blockers in 1970s, the treatment of PUD was revolutionized. By nineteen eighties, the advent of Helicobacter pylori (HP) brought about a dramatic twist and possibly the cure.
CAUSES OF PEPTIC ULCER DISEASE
  • So what causes PUD? Numerous factors blamed in the pathogenesis of PUD. Many of these factors may be acquired during life, although some of these these may already be predetermined. Historically, stomach acid has been the most common factor blamed. No Acid No ulcer- is an old axiom which may be questionable in the nineties. As a group, patients with duodenal ulcer have high acid secretion. Increased acid secretion causes changes in the wall of duodenum (gastric metaplasia) setting the stage for invasion by HP.

October 23, 1997
Web posted at: 9:58 p.m. EDT (0158 GMT) From Correspondent Al Hinman ATLANTA (CNN) Statistics indicate that at some point in their lives, 25 million Americans will develop an ulcer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that most of them suffer needlessly. The reason, the CDC says, is that most ulcers are not properly treated. A recent study by the agency shows that half of those who suffer for the first time from peptic ulcers ulcers of the stomach are not being tested and are not being properly treated. As a result, they take over-the-counter medications, which treat the symptoms of ulcers rather than the cause. "Nine out of ten ulcers are caused by a bacteria, H. pylori," said Dr. Benjamin Gold of the CDC. "So therefore, ulcers are caused by an infection which can be treated with antibiotics, and cured." But according to the CDC, most people think ulcers are caused by eating spicy foods or smoking or stress, and should be treated with antacids or over-the-counter medications. "We need to make people think not about controlling their ulcer, but about being able to cure their ulcer," said Dr. Mitchell Cohen of the CDC.

What is a stomach or duodenal ulcer?
An ulcer is an open sore, or lesion, usually found on the skin or mucous membrane areas of the body. An ulcer in the lining of the stomach or duodenum, where hydrochloric acid and pepsin are present, is referred to as a peptic ulcer
  • When the ulcer is in the stomach, it is called a gastric ulcer
  • When the ulcer is in the duodenum, it is called a duodenal ulcer
What causes gastric and duodenal ulcers?
In the past it was believed lifestyle factors, such as stress and diet caused ulcers. Later, researchers determined that stomach acids hydrochloric acid and pepsin contributed to ulcer formation. Today, research shows that most ulcers (80 percent of gastric ulcers and 90 percent of duodenal ulcers) develop as a result of infection with a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori).

Daily Wine News > Current Headlines Wine, Beer Wipe Out Ulcer-Causing Bacteria, Study Shows Posted: Thursday, January 16, 2003 By Jacob Gaffney Moderate consumption of wine or beer may help rid the body of a type of bacteria long suspected of causing peptic ulcers, according to a team of researchers in the United Kingdom. The study, published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, aimed to find out if smoking cigarettes or consuming alcohol and coffee is associated with Helicobacter pylori infection. Physicians believe that H. pylori , which can burrow holes in the stomach wall, is responsible for the majority of peptic ulcers. However, H. pylori does not cause ulcers in everyone it infects, so scientists believe certain substances may assist in "activating" it or combating it. Little else is known about the bacteria's existence inside the human body. "It is widely believed that the infection is acquired in childhood and that it is usually lifelong, unless specific therapy is used to eradicate it," said the lead author of the study, Liam Murray, an epidemiologist at Queen's University in Belfast. (For example, the bacteria can be eliminated by a course of antibiotics.) "However, it may be spontaneously eradicated in some instances," he said.
