Causes and Risks Urethritis may be caused by the same organisms that cause bladder or kidney infections (for example, E coli or Klebsiella) and some sexually-transmitted diseases (for example, Chlamydia gonorrhea , and Ureaplasma urealyticum infections). Urethritis may also develop because of a chemical sensitivity that results in irritation (such as spermatocide in condoms , contraceptive jelly, cream, or foam). Trauma from insertion of an object into the urethra may also cause urethritis. Increased risk is associated with men between 20 and 35 years old, multiple sexual partners, and those who engage in high-risk sexual behavior (such as lack of condom use or anal intercourse). Nonspecific Urethritis
Nonspecific Urethritis is an infection to the urethra, which is the urine tube that goes through to pass from the bladder to outside the body. This disease is caused by some bacteria which can be picked up from the rectum or the mouth of your partner. In some cases' people have allergic reaction to latex or spermicide and can get the disease this way. This disease is caused by several other diseases. Symptoms I n men the symptoms can be similar to gonorrhea, but usually milder. The incubation period varies but it is between one week to one month. The discharge form the urethra is thin and clear. In women the symptoms are like those of a urinary tract infection.
If nonspecific urethritis if left untreated in men, it may cause difficulty in urination and perhaps some bleeding. It can also cause the testicles to swell and be tender. If it spreads to the prostate it can cause pain in the groin. Treatment This disease can occasionally be mistaken for gonorrhea, so the doctor will prescribe penicillin which does not treat NSU. It must be treated by tetracycline or another antibiotic

Urethritis is caused by bacteria and may involve the bladder, prostate, and reproductive organs. It can affect males and females of all ages; females, however, are at higher risk. Signs and Symptoms In both sexes, and particularly in women, there may be no symptoms of urethritis. When there are, symptoms include the following. In men:
    • Burning during urination Pus or whitish mucus discharge from the penis Burning or itching around the penile opening
    In women:
    • Painful urination Unusual vaginal discharge

: I am a 30 years old Engineer working in Nigeria . I was diagnosed about one year ago with Non Specific Urethritis . The doctor prescribed an antibiotic to treat the disease . ( yellow pills , I think proxycyclin , name of the medicine is not written on the pills and the pills were given to me in a plastic container . I got the proxycyclin name from the nurse ) . The mild clear discharge from the penis in the morning disappeared and so did the mild pain when urinating . However , after 1 - 2 weeks from stopping the treatment , I had the same problem again ( NSU ) which was confirmed again by the doctor through medical Lab test and culture . I visited my doctor for more than 6 times during the past year and the same problem occured i.e. ( symptoms disappear and then appear after stopping the antibiotic ) .

Urethritis is frequently accompanied by bladder infection or inflammation (cystitis). It can affect all ages and both sexes, but it is 10 times more common in females than in males. Frequent Signs and Symptoms
    • Painful or burning urination. The pain can be severe.
    • Discharge that may be cloudy, yellow-green mucus, or may be watery and white.
    • Frequent urge to urinate, even when there is not much urine in the bladder.
    Causes
    • The same bacterial infection that causes gonorrhea causes gonococcal urethritis.
    • Nonspecific urethritis (also called nongonococcal urethritis) can be caused by a variety of organisms, including bacteria, yeast, and Chlamydia.
    • Other causes could be trauma from an injury or surgery, or from a chemical such as an antiseptic.
    • Bubble bath or bath oils have been known to cause urethritis.

urethritis Posted by Kristin on 08/08/02 at 06:42 PM Read Replies Reply to This Post Return to RoundTable My 3 year old son seems to have chronic urethritis and I can not determine the cause. We tracked down an alergy to oranges (his urethra would swell shut) and this solved part of the problem. It is very distressing since he will suddenly need to urinate and not be able to. I can not make any associations/ connection to any food he is eating. Lately it seems that his urethra is crusted shut. He is only able to urinate sitting in hot water. Does anyone have any thoughts? What is it?
Non-specific Urethritis (NSU) is a common STD found in males. It is thought to be caused by bacteria including chlamydia and ureaplasmas, and rarely by the herpes virus. It is not a very well understood condition, and the exact cause is often never found.
    What are the symptoms?
    • A slight discharge from the end of the penis, usually clear or greyish
    • Sometimes pain or irritation during urination

Info Condoms Community Sex Health At the clinic, a swab of the discharge is taken and the genital area is examined by a doctor or nurse. Treatment is with a short course of antibiotics, such as erythromycin or tetracycline. Avoid sex and alcohol during the treatment. Complications Rarely, NSU can flare up again without warning, and a different course of antibiotics is needed. If left untreated, it can lead to boils or abscesses around the scrotum and testicles, inflammation of the prostate gland, or narrowing of the urethra (urine tube inside the penis). If you think you might have a sexually transmitted infection, sort it out straight away. Go to a genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic, available at most large hospitals. GUM clinics give free and confidential advice and treatment. Or you can make an appointment to see your GP.

    What Causes NSU?
NSU is the name given to any inflammantion of a man's uretha (the lining of the urinary tract of the penis) that is not caused by gonorrhoea. For this reason it is sometimes called non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU). NSU can sometimes occur without being the result of sexually transmitted infection. NSU is one of the most common diseases transmitted sexually. About 50% of cases are caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. Several other organisms are known to cause NSU, but in many cases no specific organism can be detected. Although seldom difficult to treat, NSU can have serious consequences if undetected or left untreated. It can spread to the prostate or testicles, and in extreme cases may cause infertility. If passed to a female partner, it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and infertility.

Nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) is a nongonorrheal bacterial infection of the urethra (tube that carries urine out of the body) in men. NGU involves Chlamydia trachomatis , which causes chlamydia. The term NGU refers to the condition in men and chlamydia refers to the condition in women. Incidence and Prevalence NGU and chlamydial infection account for 50% of reported STDs in the United States. More than 4 million cases are reported annually, mostly in people 15 to 35 years old. NGU is the most commonly diagnosed sexually transmitted disease in men in the United States. Causes Bacteria are spread through direct sexual contact involving the genitals, anus, or mouth. Several types of bacteria cause NGU and many are undetectable during diagnosis. The most common are

    Definition
Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra that is usually caused by an infection.
    Description
The urethra is the canal that moves urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. When this canal becomes infected, inflammation occurs due to the accumulation of white blood cells in the area. When this occurs, it is called urethritis. Besides the urethra, the urinary tract consists of the bladder, ureters, and kidneys. Inflammation can move up the urethra, causing cystitis in the bladder, or nephritis in the kidneys. Collectively, these inflammations are called urinary tract infections or UTIs. Urinary tract infections are much more common in women than in men, probably due to anatomy. Infections are especially more common in older women, due to bladder problems.
Uncomplicated urethritis usually results from infection by the bacteria Escherichia coli , commonly found in the bowel. Complicated urethritis can occur when other problems exist, such as
