When part of an infectious process, it is commonly caused by gonorrhoea (gonococcal urethritis) or chlamydia and ureaplasma (nongonococcal urethritis). Urethritis is also one of the components of Reiters syndrome external genitalia , which is characterized by urethritis, arthritis and conjunctivitis. Although urethral inflammation is not in itself a serious clinical problem, it is usually accompanied by significant discomfort — pain, itching and urinary frequency. In addition, it may be the forerunner of a more serious systemic disorder. Infectious urethritis is most common in young men and is usually sexually transmitted. Postgonococcal urethral strictures complicate urethritis, causing obstructive symptoms at any time from months to years after the infection (see

Definition
Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra that is usually caused by an infection. Description
The urethra is the canal that moves urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. When this canal becomes infected, inflammation occurs due to the accumulation of white blood cells in the area. When this occurs, it is called urethritis. Besides the urethra, the urinary tract consists of the bladder, ureters, and kidneys. Inflammation can move up the urethra, causing cystitis in the bladder, or nephritis in the kidneys. Collectively, these inflammations are called urinary tract infections or UTIs. Urinary tract infections are much more common in women than in men, probably due to anatomy. Infections are especially more common in older women, due to bladder problems.
Uncomplicated urethritis usually results from infection by the bacteria Escherichia coli , commonly found in the bowel. Complicated urethritis can occur when other problems exist, such as kidney stones , malformations of the urinary tract, spinal cord injury , or a compromised immune system. People with diabetes tend to have more urinary tract infections, as well as hospitalized patients. Urinary tract infections can also be sexually transmitted. Some people seem to be susceptible to urinary tract infections, having them recurrently.

Hassle Free Clinic Home Urethritis What is it? Urethritis is an infection of the inside of the penis. The two most important causes are gonorrhea and chlamydia. There are other causes of urethritis as well, not all of which require treatment. Causes and symptoms Gonorrhea , a bacteria that causes a white or yellow pus discharge, mild to severe burning when urinating and itching inside the head of the penis. Symptoms usually begin in 2-6 days, though sometimes men have no symptoms at all. Chlamydia , a bacteria-like organism that causes milder symptoms than gonorrhea (a white or clear discharge with mild burning). Symptoms can take 7-21 days to start. However, in up to 30% of cases, there are no symptoms at all. Trichomonas is an organism passed on during vaginal sex. Men generally have no symptoms but can carry trichomonas inside the penis and transmit it to female partners. Sometimes it causes a slight discharge or itching inside the head of the penis. Non-specific urethritis (NSU) . If you have symptoms but nothing shows up in your lab tests, you may have non-specific urethritis (NSU). "Non-specific" means you have an infection, but the lab can't tell what is causing it.

Nonspecific Urethritis
Typical urethritis is not normally caused by sex, however non-specific urethritis is usually passed on via sexual intercourse, caused by either the bacteria from gonorrhoea, or Chlamydia (see either gonorrhoea or Chlamydia). It is basically an infection of the urethra (where you urinate from).
So what is it?
It is a Sexually Transmitted disease (STD) which infects the urethra. The urethra is located between the bladder and the urethral opening (where you urinate from). It can be caused by a variety of organisms, other than the gonococci. With this infection the urethra swells and narrows, which impedes the flow of urine, which causes various symptoms. An allergy or excessive alcohol consumption may also cause this infection.
Symptoms
Women

Urination increases.

http://www.idph.state.il.us/public/hb/hbngu.htm
Non-Gonococcal Urethritis What is non-gonococcal urethritis? NGU (non-gonococcal urethritis) is an infection of the urethra caused by pathogens (germs) other than gonorrhea. How common is NGU? Several types of germs cause NGU; the most common and serious is chlamydia. Chlamydia is very common in both males and females. The diagnosis of NGU is more commonly made in males than in females, mainly due to the anatomical differences. Germs that can cause NGU include but are not limited to-
  • Chlamydia trachomatis (most common) Ureaplasma urealyticum Trichomonas vaginalis (rare) Herpes simplex virus (rare) Haemophilus vaginalis Mycoplasma genitalium
How can I get NGU? Most germs that cause NGU can be passed during sex (vaginal, anal or oral) that involves direct mucous membrane contact with an infected person. Nonsexual causes of NGU may include urinary tract infections, an inflamed prostate gland due to bacteria (bacterial prostatitis), a narrowing or closing of the tube in the penis (urethral stricture), a tightening of the foreskin so that it cannot be pulled back from the head of the penis (phimosa), or as the result of a process such as inserting a tube into the penis (catheterization), During birth, infants may be exposed to the germs causing NGU in passage through the birth canal. This may cause the baby to have infections in the eyes (conjunctivitis), ears and lungs (pneumonia).

Nonspecific Urethritis in Men Advertising
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Urethritis (YOO-ree-THRI-tis) is a swelling and inflammation of the urethra, the duct that drains the bladder. ""Nonspecific'' is the medical way of saying that the exact cause may not be known. Once you begin treatment, the problem should begin to clear up in about a week.
Causes
Nonspecific urethritis is often an aftermath of unprotected sex. It is frequently the result of an infection with bacteriamost often chlamydia (clah-MID-ee-uh)yeast, or other germs. Injury to the urethra by trauma, surgery, or chemicals can cause urethritis. It can also be triggered by bubble baths or bath oils.
Signs/Symptoms
Typical symptoms include pain or burning during urination; a cloudy, white, or yellow-green mucous discharge from the penis; or pain during sex. In men older than 50, urinary dribbling may be a problem.
Care
If the doctor suspects an infection, you will be given antibiotic medicine.

National Guideline on the Management of Non-gonococcal Urethritis
Clinical Effectiveness Group (Association for Genitourinary Medicine and the Medical Society for the Study of Venereal Diseases)
Introduction Urethritis, or inflammation of the urethra, is a multifactorial condition which is primarily sexually acquired. It is characterised by discharge and/or dysuria but may be asymptomatic. The diagnosis of urethritis is confirmed by demonstrating an excess of polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNLs) in the anterior urethra. This is usually undertaken using a urethral smear, but a first pass urine specimen (FPU) can also be used. Urethritis is described as either gonococcal, when Neisseria gonorrhoeae is detected or non-gonococcal (NGU) when it is not. Mucopurulent cervicitis is the female equivalent with approximately 40% of cases being due to infection with Chlamydia trachomatis.
Aetiology
Chlamydia trachomatis is the commonest cause of NGU accounting for 30-50% of cases. Ureaplasma urealyticum (ureaplasmas) and Mycoplasma genitalium probably cause urethritis and account for 10-20% of cases respectively.
