In the male the urethra passes through the prostate gland and then travels through the penis emptying at the tip of the penis. In women the urethra is very short only 2.5 to 5.5 centimeters. The urethra in both men and women is basically the same except for its length. The urethra is lined by epithelial (special skin cells) and has many glands that empty into it. The Causes The Symptoms Initially the symptoms may be tingling and burning within the urethra. These symptoms can progress to frank pain and discharge. The discharge associated with nonspecific urethritis is usually watery but it can also be pus-like (thick solid color, grey, green, yellow) or bloody. There may be very either little discharge or copious discharge. In men, the discharge may stain their underwear and in women, the discharge is often confused with vaginal discharge. Pain can range from slight to severe and it may occur only at urination or continuously. The Diagnosis Treatment Treatment for chlamydia trachomatis is generally tetracycline or erythromycin 500 mg. every 6 hours for 10 to 14 days. For NSU alone Tetracycline 500 mg. every 6 hours for 10 days is usually more than adequate. For trichomonas metronidazole (Flagyl) either 2 grams as a single dose at bed time or 500 mg every 8 hours for 5 to 7 days may be used. When candida exists, oral antimonilia agents are used but treatment may require a Urologic evaluation as strictures, chemical irritations or possible tumors may exist. Not infrequently after treatment for gonorrhea a NSU may develop. A course of tetracycline is usually prescribed at this point. Generally, partners should always be treated for gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomonas and candida. There is no specific curative treatment for herpes but Zovirax (acyclovar) can be used to limit and prevent subsequent attacks.
