INFORMATION NOTES A Pamphlet For Your Information On Allergic Reactions URTICARIA (HIVES)
Urticaria, commonly known as hives, is a condition that affects about 20 per cent of the population at some time. If you have ever suffered with skin that erupts into red welts, often with severe itching, you know how distressing this type of condition can be. And how much it can affect your life.
Hives may come in two different forms – the ACUTE , which can last from a few hours to less than six weeks, and the CHRONIC , which lasts for longer than six weeks. The welts may disappear and then reappear after a short time. Scratching these hives will make them worse, so it is important to avoid this natural tendency. In many cases, no apparent cause is found for hives even after intensive investigation by a specialist may be required. Allergic reactions to foods, drugs, insect stings, latex, cold air, sunscreens, ultraviolet light and x-ray dyes often cause Acute urticaria. Viral infections such as the common cold, strep throat, infectious mononucleosis, ort hepatitis, could induce this reaction. In someone who is prone to hives, the triggers will cause the body to release chemical mediators, including histamine, which causes a runny nose and watery eyes. Histamine dilates the blood vessels and allows fluid to leak into the surrounding tissues… the result is itching and swelling.

Treatment of Chronic Urticaria John H. Epstein: Therapy of chronic urticaria is frequently frustrating and unsuccessful. Because of this, let us ask for the opinions of Dr. Harry Roth (University of California, San Francisco).
Then, we ask Dr. William L. Epstein to question Dr. Lennart Juhlin (University Hospital Nijmegen), and Dr. Alain Claudy (University of Lyon) on this topic. Harry L. Roth: Consider each case to be due to an "antigen," and continue looking until the urticaria is gone. Even then, the etiology of chronic urticaria is found in only 20-25 percent of cases studied. The following techniques may be employed in eliciting the cause of chronic urticaria. l. Empirical dietary control with elimination diets up to two weeks

c. Candida and other yeasts

    Professor Lennart Juhlin,
Department of Dermatology, University Hospital, Uppsala, Sweden
Probably the most early description of the disease we today call urticaria is found in "The Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic", Huang Di Nei Jing, which was written sometimes between 1000-200 years before Christ ( ). In chapter 64 of Basic questions (Sin Wen) urticaria is called "Feng Yin Zheng" which means wind-type concealed rash. This is still the Chinese word for urticaria which was thought to be due to excess in lesser Yin which causes obstruction of fluid in the skin.
Hippokrates who lived 460-377 BC described elevated itching lesions caused by nettles and mosquitoes which he called knidosis after the Greek word for nettle (knido). He also mentions that the weals can occur in patients with gastrointestinal disorders but then often with less itching. The same name was again introduced by Jean-Louis Alibert in Paris in his book on skin diseases published in 1833 ( ). Hebra used the term knidosis for the chronic type of nettle rash whereas in Andrew's and Domonko's textbook from 1963 it is used synonymously with urticaria.

    Cold Urticaria
My doctor says my little girl may have cold urticaria. What is this, exactly? How should I treat it?
Some people develop hives on the skin when they encounter cold temperatures. This condition, called cold urticaria, is the most common type of hives caused by a physical condition. The hives are produced by a rapid release of histamine brought about by IgE antibodies and eosinophils (a type of white blood cell often involved in allergic reactions) in response to the cold. Rapid cooling, as from the evaporation when one gets out of a swimming pool, can trigger cold urticaria even on a warm day. For people with cold urticaria, swimming in very cold water is quite dangerous, sometimes even causing death.

      Urticaria
      Definition
Urticaria is also called nettle rash or hives. Urticaria is a temporary skin condition often due to an allergic reaction and is characterized by an elevated patch of skin (reddish or pale) and/or pimples and wheals accompanied by burning, stinging, or severe itching sensation.
      Additional Info
Hives can often be treated with an antihistamine such as Benadryl (trademark name for diphenhydr amine ). In rare cases, airway obstruction or anaphylactic shock (system-wide allergic response) could occur, requiring immediate medical intervention. Hives can be caused by many agents, and in many cases the exact cause is not known. The red welt most of us get following a bee sting is probably the most familiar example of a hive.
      MSDS Relevance
Urticaria can be a symptom of exposure to certain chemicals . As always, read your MSDS's so you know if hives are a symptom of exposure. Should you develop hives, you can take extra precautions to make sure you are not exposed to the material and see if the condition improves.

urticaria. urticaria is commonly known as hives. Most cases of urticariaare acute, lasting from a few hours to less than six weeks.
    http://www.doctorgupta.com/allergy-urticaria.htm
Urticaria Urticaria is commonly known as hives. First the skin itches, then it erupts into red welts. The itching may be severe, keeping people from working or sleeping. It's a distressing disorder which affects an estimated 20 percent of the population at one time or another in their lives. Most cases of urticaria are acute, lasting from a few hours to less than six weeks. Some cases are chronic, lasting more than six weeks. The welts may appear in one place, disappear after a short time, then erupt at another spot, then another. They are made worse by scratching. Bouts of urticaria have been traced to such triggers as certain foods and additives, infections, drugs (including aspirin), cold, sun exposure, insect stings, alcohol, exercise, endocrine disorders and emotional stress. In some people, pressure caused by belts and constricting clothing causes eruption. Urticaria may be a response to infection including the common cold, strep throat and infectious mononucleosis. In the urticaria-prone person, these triggers cause the body to release chemical mediators, including histamine, from cells. Histamine (which causes itchy, runny noses and watery eyes in hay fever sufferers) dilates the walls of blood vessels, allowing fluids to leak out into the surrounding tissues. Swelling and itching are the result. How is urticaria treated?

QUERY I have been told I have Raynauds. I started with typical symptoms of
that, numb, cold, white fingertips after exposure to cold. This has
gotten worse. I now have intense itching and swelling if an area of my
body is exposed to a temperature drop. At the beach I stood by the
waters edge and my legs became bright red, began to itch and swelled
until they were uncomfortable. My ears, fingers, hands are very
sensitive to temperature changes but even if a part of my body is
covered it can be affected. I attended a football game and sitting on
the bleachers caused my butt to itch madly. If I dig in the dirt in the
spring my fingers itch. I guess you get the point.
My question is whether or not Raynauds progresses to this state or if I now have something else and should see my doctor again. I take Zoloft daily but that is the only medication I take regularly.
