THE USE OF TENS IN THE TREATMENT OF LEG ULCERS. Dr Palle Rosted, MD. Senior Lecturer Sheffield University Consultant Acupuncturist Weston Park Hospital, Department of Oncology, Sheffield University, England Dr Sahra Elizabeth Thomas, MD Consultant Dermatologist, Barnsley District General Hospital, England Correspondance: Palle Rosted MD. Telephone: + 44 1142360077, Fax: + 44 1142620491, E-mail: Prosted@aol.com Presented at ICMART’s Congress, Nicosia, Cyprus, 1997 Presented at BMAS Scientific Meeting, York, England 1999 Abstract Objective The beneficial effect of TENS and acupuncture in the treatment of peripheral vascular disorders including leg ulcers has been stressed in a number of papers. In common for the majority of the published papers is a small number of patients and lack of a control group. A new technique was introduced a number of years ago where electrodes was placed on the left hand irrespective of the location of the ulcer. However, this technique has never been investigated in a controlled setting and the aim of this study is to examine the technique in a double blinded randomised controlled study. Materials and methods 40 patients suffering from venous leg ulcers of more than three months duration were included in the study. Patients were randomly allocated to either TENS treatment or Mock-TENS treatment. The equipment used were a RDG Tiger Pulse Model 120z dual channel TENS machine (ITO CO, LTD, Tokyo, Japan). The equipment delivered a constant square wave pulse of low frequency (2 Hz) to a negative electrode placed on the web between the 1st and 2nd metacarpal bones, the positive electrode being situated at the ulnar edge of the same hand. Each stimulation consists of burst of five pulses with an internal frequency of 100 Hz. As electrodes self-adhesive electro-conductive rubber electrodes 30x50 mm were used. The electrical cable were prior to the study inserted in either channel 1 or channel 2. Channel 1 were the active channel and channel 2 were the inactive.

    NONINVASIVE VASCULAR LABORATORY
The Noninvasive Vascular Laboratory (the "Blood flow lab") is one of the key components of the Maryland Vascular Center. Noninvasive testing, as the name implies, allows patients to be examined using Doppler ultrasound techniques free of the risks and discomforts of injections and/or other invasive maneuvers. These tests allow diagnosis of almost all known or suspected vascular disorders and testing can often determine the severity of the problems and the its need for treatment. A full range of noninvasive tests is available at our Noninvasive Vascular Laboratory including tests for: Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) - blockages in the circulation to the arms or legs due to atherosclerosis or other diseases, which may threaten the limbs.
    • Doppler arterial exams of the legs or arms (Physiologic testing)
    • Duplex ultrasound scan of the extremity arteries
    • Treadmill exercise testing for claudication (leg pain with walking)
Cerebrovascular Disease - blockages in the arteries to the brain that may increase the risk of stroke
    • Carotid artery duplex scan
    • Transcranial Doppler (TCD)
Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) - blood clots in the veins that could migrate to the lungs

Interventional Radiology is an innovative branch of medicine in which physicians treat diseases non-operatively through small catheters guided to the target by fluoroscopic and other imaging modalities. Many of these minimally invasive procedures have replaced traditional surgery. The Section of Vascular and Interventional Radiology at Yale offers a comprehensive program of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to treat a variety of disorders. These disorders include: peripheral vascular disease, biliary disease, renovascular disease, benign and malignant tumors, and pleural effusions. As a nationally recognized Center of Excellence for Embolization, we offer this alternative treatment for uterine fibroids. Our practice can perform a full diagnostic evaluation for this problem. We can help determine if uterine artery embolization is a treatment option.
