To the VATER Organization, I enclose a short article which I hope can be put on the Website of the Vaterconnection. The reason for submitting this article is to inform interested families that we have started a systematic search for genetic factor(s) associated with VATER. This search started with a recent discovery of a specific chromosome rearrangement in a Danish boy with Vater Syndrome, which will greatly improve our chances to uncover a genetic basis for VATER. Since we need to study as many persons as possible with VATER syndrome, I have contacted several doctors in Europe who have contacts with families. I hope that this information will facilitate a link to American families who would be interested in participating. Yours sincerely,

Copenhagen N, Denmark Search for genetic factor(s) in VATER Syndrome During the last decade, mapping of genetic disorders and malformation syndromes have converged with the mapping and isolation of thousands of novel genes. From this we have learned, that defects within single genes may be associated with very complex malformations, affecting often different but for each gene very specific organs and body-structures. This does not mean that we can conclude that genetic factors are associated with, or even causing VATER, but the possibility certainly exist. The search for disease genes will be greatly helped by the resources created by the Human Genome Project, coupled with systematic analysis of persons with specific diseases
