Reliability analysts are typically forced to choose between using an "algorithmic programming language" or a "reliability package" for analyzing their models and lifetime data. This paper shows that computational languages can be used to bridge the gap to combine the flexibility of a programming language with the ease of use of a package. Computational languages facilitate the development of new statistical techniques and are excellent teaching tools. This paper considers three diverse reliability problems that are handled easily with a computational algebra language: system reliability bounds, lifetime data analysis, and model selection.

SOME APPLICATION ASPECTS OF COMPUTER ALGEBRA SYSTEMS
Margarita Spiridonova
Abstract: Some features of the computer algebra systems and their applications are considered. Research topics in this field developed with participation of the author are briefly described. Key words: computer algebra, computer algebra systems, symbolic and algebraic computations. Computer Algebra Systems and their Application s What is computer algebra? In 1982 R. Loos (Karlsruhe) gave the following informal definition “Computer a lgebra is that part of computer science which designs, analy z es, implements and applies algebraic algorithms The computer algebra could be considered as an intersection of computer science and mathematics as well. A view to computer algebra as a special form of scientific computation is presented in [2]. A terminology note: in some references synonymous terms like symbolic and algebraic computations and mathematical computations are used. In contrast to numerical computation , in computer algebra the emphasis is on computing with symbols representing mathematical objects and concepts. Of course

We discuss the application of computer algebra to problems commonly arising in numerical relativity, such as the derivation of 3+1-splits, manipulation of evolution equations and automatic code generation. Particular emphasis is put on working with abstract index tensor quantities as much as possible.

Course on Computer Algebra Applications
Laredo, Spain, September 1-5, 1997.
We are pleased to announce the course "Computer Algebra Applications", to be held in Laredo, Spain, during the first week of September, 1997 (monday to friday). The course will be part of the University of Cantabria Summer Program, with the support of the Erasmus Network "Galois" and the Esprit IV project "FRISCO". It aims to present a panorama of technological applications of Computer Algebra. Programme Moreover, two afternoon sessions will be organized with the participation of engineers working in industrial problems requiring Computer Algebra tools.
The course is not specifically addressed to Computer Algebra specialists, but also to those with reasonable mathematical skills (engineers, scientists, students ), interested in learning about how this tool can help in analyzing and solving technological problems. General Information
Laredo is a village (10.000 inhabitants) about half way between Bilbao and Santander (approx. distance 45 kilometers to each of these cities; there are frequent buses serving Laredo to and from Bilbao or Santander). It has a wonderful beach, several kilometers long, at walking distance from the course classroom in the Casa de Cultura.
