International Workshop on Computer Algebra Systems and Their Applications, CASA'2003
Month: June 2003 Date: June 24 Name: International Workshop on Computer Algebra Systems and Their Applications, CASA'2003 Location: Saint Petersburg, Russian Federation.
Description
Computer algebra (also known as symbolic computation or computational algebra) has found applications in many domains of science such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, computer science, computational biology, education, etc. The computer algebra systems (cas) such as Mathematica, Maple, MuPAD, Reduce, Axiom (and others that have been developed) are becoming more and more popular and now they are valuable tools for teaching, research, and industry. This workshop solicits for presentation high-quality papers describing original research results in computer algebra systems and their applications.
All accepted papers will be published as full papers in the Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. In addition, all accepted papers will be scheduled for oral presentation. Submission implies the willingness of at least one of the authors to register and present the paper.
Topics
This workshop is intended to cover recent developments (algorithms, programs, packages, extensions, new tools, etc.) developed for computer algebra systems. Emphasis will be put on the applications of these systems for solving problems in science and engineering. Thus, we accept papers describing research on actual or possible applications of computer algebra systems and techniques to other fields (such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, computer science, education, industry, etc.). Papers exploring the interaction of the symbolic, numerical, and graphical tools of the computer algebra systems to solve complex problems are also welcomed.

Further information from Belinda Morris Geometric algebra is a powerful mathematical language built on the work of the 19 th Century mathematician William Clifford (once a fellow of Trinity College). The subject has been developed steadily over the last 100 years and is now routinely applied to problems in gravitation, quantum theory, dynamics, camera vision and computer graphics. The focus of the meeting will be to bring together researchers in different disciplines (physics, engineering and computer science) to share their insights into the advantages and applications of geometric algebra. The programme will include sessions on relativity and gravitation, multiparticle quantum theory and entanglement, projective and conformal geometries, and applications in engineering and computer science. There will also be an exhibition about the life and works of William and Lucy Clifford by Roy and Monty Chisholm.

History of Computer Algebra Applications
Session Organizers:
Marina Grosheva grosheva@inmech.msu.su , Moscow State University, Russia
Georgy Efimov efimov@applmat.msk.su , Keldysh Institute for Applied Mathematics, Moscow, Russia
Thirty years ago in Prague there was one of the first scientific meetings devoted to Applications of Symbolic Manipulations, as it was named at that time, or Computer Algebra, as now it is usually referred to. It was in August 1967, Colloquium of Congress of Astronomical Union "The Use of Electronic Computers for Analytical Developments in Celestial Mechanics" (Astronomical Journal,v.73,N 3). Thirty years were passed... Prague again, Computer Algebra Applications again, but thirty years after. This fact provides a solid reason for historical retrospective view. Several generations of computers were substituted by each others, programming languages were significantly changed, new problems are waiting for their solutions now. New generation of scientists came in our area - this is why we would like to remember the names of pioneers who started this work much time ago. As Russia and other countries concerns, the history of Computer Algebra Applications is rich by events and interesting facts. However; some of projects, conference reports and papers are not well known, since they were not published widely enough. Numerous projects and programs were implemented during this period - from large projects used by many people to programs for special usage. Among those who leaded and participated in these projects and who are absent now? Let's remember well known names V.L.Kantorovich, N.N.Govorun, A.P.Ershov and many others. Historical point of view is very important sometimes for elimination of a repetition of old mistakes and searching solutions which have been already found long time ago. This is the main idea of the proposed session.

Welcome again. In order to enable prospective users to preview my text easily and conveniently, I'm putting a copy of it on the web for your perusal. The table of contents with links is at the bottom of this page. A few comments:
Many thanks to those who have helped me in this project. In particular, John Bakula for prodding me into moving this project into the final stages and pointed me in the direction of McGraw-Hill custom publishing. They are printing a nice soft copy text for a reasonable price to students about $26. Thanks also to my colleagues Jamie Radcliffe, Lynn Erbe, Brian Harbourne, Kristie Pfabe, Barton Willis and a number of others who have made many suggestions and corrections. Thanks to Jackie Kohles for her excellent work on solutions to the exercises.
About the process: I am writing the text in Latex. The pages you will see have been converted to gif files for universal viewing with most browsers. The downside of this conversion is that the pages appear at a fairly crude resolution. I hope that they are still readable to all. Hardcopy of the text is
