July 1, 2002 The "Fuzzy Math" of Fluoride Promotion By Paul Connett, PhD ggvideo@northnet.org Many of you may have probably heard the term "fuzzy math" before. It is a term used to describe a somewhat controversial method of teaching math where the answers do not have to be EXACTLY right. But at the very least, they are supposed to be close. Unfortunately, many of those promoting the practice of water fluoridation would fail to meet even these basic "fuzzy math" guidelines, with methods better described as " hairy " than " fuzzy " And "fuzzy math" is supposed to be a temporary teaching tool for young children, NOT a permanent way of doing business or a method used to change the data to whatever suits your agenda. While I was in New Zealand recently, I was sent some literature, better described as a propaganda package, from the Australian Dental Association entitled

And budget deficits affect trade, which sways interest and exchange rates. And what about external events and consumer confidence? They may rouse or depress the stock market, which alters other indices, and all of these interact with each other in complicated ways.

The Ribald Reign of King George the Second
George W. Bush's Fuzzy Math
Soon after the Supreme Court decision that led Al Gore to concede the presidential election to George W. Bush, I wrote an article entitled Bush Wins, Bush Loses . In the article, I compared George W. Bush to Daffy Duck for the way that he has been duped into accepting a job so difficult that only an idiot would take it. The whole point of the article is that the difficulty of the political situation and President George Junior's inexperience, inarticulateness and general inability will combine to make him the least remarkable person to inhabit the Oval Office in American History. Well, it's not too surprising that a large number of the Republican faithful disagreed with me. Even less surprising is the fuzzy math that they used to justify their angry responses. Typical is the following, from a Republican who goes by the name of poetwarrior. This GOP guy writes, "I dissent. Well-written but not a very honest diatribe. Remember: half the country voted for this man." Now, I ask you: what's not honest about saying 1st that George W. Bush is not very smart and 2nd that he's got a very difficult job ahead of him? Honesty hurts sometimes.

Mitch Daniels' fuzzy math
By Brendan Nyhan ( brendan@spinsanity.org
February 12, 2002
[First published on Salon.com Mitch Daniels was an unusual choice to head the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) in the Bush White House. A former political operative and pharmaceutical executive, he was tapped for the position last year despite a lack of experience in the intricacies of the federal budget. Since then, Daniels has become a key figure in the administration , helping design policies and pressing publicly for their enactment. His tenure is significant for more than his political success. It is another sign of the importance P.R. tactics play in American politics. The OMB director once a budget expert is now an operative chosen for his political skills, particularly his ability to sell the administration's economic proposals in the media. In August, Daniels admitted as much, telling the Wall Street Journal that "[t]o the extent I bring anything ... to this job, maybe it's an ability to think about how a product, whether it's Prozac or a president's proposal, is marketed." Predictably, he has displayed a disturbing tendency to make dishonest claims for political advantage on federal budget issues. With the debate about Bush's new budget now well underway, it's time to take a closer look at Daniels and his battles with the truth. A pattern of dissembling Daniels has focused most of his spin on the costs of the Bush tax cut and its effects on the federal budget, subjects that have dominated recent economic debate. Take

What is Math Reform?
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) equates "math reform" with the ideas currently found in Principles and Standards for School Mathematics PSSM ), a 402 page revision of the NCTM Standards. The NCTM calls it "standards-based" math. Opponents call it "fuzzy" math or "new-new math." Regardless of the name, "reform math" is characterized by a rejection of traditional K-12 math content and an endorsement of "constructivist" teaching methods.

New York, NY - In a letter signed by mathematics department chairs at City University of New York senior colleges, New York University and Polytechnic University of New York, Schools Chancellor Joel Klein is strongly advised to discontinue use of "defective curricula" in NYC schools. "We wish to underscore our concern that a decision by the Working Group on Numeracy to continue support for defective curricula will profoundly damage the career opportunities of New York City children, the viability of mathematics and science programs at many CUNY colleges, and the economic infrastructure of New York City, which is increasingly technology-based and so, dependent upon the supply of mathematically competent students entering the workforce." Letter co-signers include Charles Newman, Acting Director of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at NYU and Robert Feinerman, Chair of the Mathematics Department at Lehman College and Chair of the CUNY Mathematics Department Chairs.

My letter to President Bush: S-170 X HR-303 = -0- 71 X 395 FUZZY MATH President George W. Bush The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Av. N.W. Washington, DC 20500 Dear President Bush, We all completely and wholehartly support the war on terrorism. We can not leave this war like we left Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm. We must have a complete, verifialbe and unquestionable VICTORY When you were Governor of Texas and now as President if you were disabled would you have to pay for your own disability? What if both of these disabilities were in the defense of our country? I think you would say "THATS WRONG". That is what disabled Vetrans that have dedicated their lives to the defensa of our freedom have to do. Pay for their own VA disability compensation. YOU WILL HAVE TO AGREE " THIS IS TRRRABLY WRONG". There are two bills in Congress that could correct this "WRONG". S.170 with 71% of Senators as co-sponsors and HR 303 with 83% of Representatives as co-sponsors. With that much support in Congress why can't this "wrong" be corrected? BECAUSE YOU, PRESIDENT BUSH, OUR COMMANDER IN CHIEF, will not support it. It appears that you believe that a Veteran that has spent his life in the defense of our country, in two wars, must pay for his own VA disability compensation.

Fuzzy Math At The USDA?
2002 is shaping up to be the year of the global drought and the supply and demand estimates for the grains have changed dramatically over the past few months. Amid the changes however, there are some funny numbers coming out of the USDA's World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE). Especially suspect are the 2002-2003 total usage estimates for soybeans. If the USDA is correct, soybean use is going to fall by 250 million bushels or 8.5% from the previous year. If they are as wrong as I suspect they are, the outlook for soybeans in the next year is more bullish than the 1996-97 season when prices rose above $8 per bushel. Why do I believe this? Primarily because, unlike USDA analysts, I do not see any reason to reduce the total usage estimates from 2001-2002. To understand the difference between our two views, go back to the August 12th WASDE report. On that day, the USDA cut their soybean crop estimate by 232 million bushels to 2.628 billion bushels due to the drought. That is understandable, but what is odd is that they also cut the total usage estimate by 170 million bushels to 2.674 billion bushels. Why did they do that? The explanation given in the report was that they expect a 135 million bushel drop in exports due to a smaller soybean crop and increased production in South America. Therein lies the rub. The USDA is assuming that prices will average $5.60 per bushel in the new season and that $5.60 will be enough to ration demand for U.S. soybeans and push business toward South America. If history is any judge, these assumptions are seriously flawed and the USDA usage estimates are severely underestimated.

Where would the world be without asterisks? They're so handy when you want to put something into the fine print hoping nobody will bother to read it and realize, say, that gyms called "24-hour Fitness" aren't always open 24 hours a day. Or that a fabulous new medication might cause scary side effects like dry mouth, hallucinations and marriage to Liza Minnelli. Some companies, of course, decide that details are pesky little things and dispense with asterisks altogether. That's what My 94.1 decided to do when it began airing promos thanking listeners for making it "Arbitron-rated Number One at work."

Easy year-over-year comparisons are not good reasons to buy stocks.
By Eric Moskowitz
January 25, 2001
On Wall Street, there's always a silver lining to even the worst news. Now, after the market's nine-month ride into bear country, Wall Street wordsmiths are beginning to roll out another rosy pitch for 2001: easy year-over-year comparisons. Taken at face value, the concept implies that investors should buy the stocks that stumbled in 2000 like Apple Computer (Nasdaq : AAPL Gateway (NYSE : GTW Lucent Technologies (NYSE : LU Motorola (NYSE : MOT ), and Nortel Networks (NYSE : NT ) anticipating that this year's third- and fourth-quarter results will compare favorably to last year's weaker numbers. By mid-December, some analysts were already on the bandwagon. "We expect a pickup in [chip] demand by the second half of 2001, and Intel's year-over-year comparisons should be relatively easy to beat," said U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray senior research analyst Ashok Kumar.

The worldline of a particle is precisely defined, as are its lightcones. but what happens when we start talking about the worldline of a system, like a human being? We appear to treat the human being's worldline just like a particle's worldline, yet the human being is really made up of a bundle of particle worldlines that have independent paths and lengths. Does the human being's worldline represent a physical object in spacetime, or is it a metaphor, an average of individual worldlines that summarizes the paths of individual particles and that has no independent physical reality? If it does not precisely define the existence of a complex system in space-time, are we not over simplifying the nature of space-time by using the term worldline for point particles and groups of point particles, one being precise, the other being "fuzzy"? PS
