N O T E S As those who stayed awake in high school geometry class know, a Moebius Strip is a geometric loop with just one surface and one edge. It can be easily made with a strip of paper by twisting it once, then taping the ends together. The film premise is based on an idea by legendary French graphic novelist Jean "Moebius" Giraud, whose works are often favored by the Heavy Metal crowd. No stranger to Hollywood, Giraud has produced conceptual designs and storyboards for such sci-fi classics such as Tron, Alien, The Abyss, The Fifth Element, and Rendezvous with Rama. Bringing even more Hollywood firepower to the table is veteran screenwriter James Cox, a Disney pro whose credits include Fern Gully. Rounding out the team is Frank Foster, a former Senior VP at Sony Pictures, who is co-producing and directing the feature. In what is promised to be a brand-new premise not based on any of Giraud's books, the film is about a physicist named Simon Weir, who gets trapped in a space-time portal he created, so his son sets out looking for him, traveling by numerous planets with strange sights and giant, alien beings. Think of it as a Jack and the Beanstalk fairytale in a MYST setting. One hundred percent 3D, CGI animation started in March, 2001 in China, with a crew of 150 animators and a budget of $6 million. Giraud, who supervises the production from Paris, created 400 sketches as inspiration for the animation.

You can amaze your friends with this piece of paper that has only one side! Here's how to do it: Cut a long, skinny strip of paper. Make a loop with the paper by matching up the narrow ends. Make one twist into the paper and tape the ends together. With your marker, start drawing a line on the piece of tape and continue the line without lifting your marker until you meet up at the tape where you started. You drew a line on both sides of the strip of paper without lifting your marker. The paper only has one side! ADVERTISEMENT:

In the eighteenth century, Euler (1707-1783) observed that the solids enclosed by plane faces have the number of vertices (V) minus the number of edges (E) plus the number of faces (F) that equals 2, the formula therefore being V - E + F = 2. But this formula does not work for all polyhedra e.g., a polyhedron with a hole so the constitution of a hole in a solid as well as its relation to Euler's formula for polyhedra was questioned. According to Peterson [ THE CURIOUS BAND BETWEEN DIMENSIONS

Balmond [ ] uses the figure eight, also used as the symbol of infinity in mathematics, to graph relations between the numbers 5 and 4, 6 and 3, 7 and 2, 8 and 1 in an asymmetrical way. Recent studies of analemma which also mimics the figure eight show that its asymmetry is a result of the sun being projected to the curved surface of the Earth, but purging this deformation [ Symbolically, the eternal revolving is traditionally symbolised by the

Moebius Strip Construction
Assembly:
  • Step 0: Have ready glue, paste, or tape to use in connecting the ends of the paper. Step 1: Cut a rectangular strip of paper in which the length is 10 to 11 times the width. In the picture above, the ends of the strip have been labeled so the top edge on each end is A and the bottom edge on each end is B. Step 2: Hold each end of the long rectangular strip in front of you, one end in each hand, so as to almost form a bracelet or cylinder. Step 3: Rather than forming the bracelet or cylinder, hold one end in place and twist the other end a half-twist so the original top edge - A - of the twisted end lines up with the original bottom edge - B - of the other end. Step 4: Tape, glue, or paste the two ends together so as to form a twisted strip of paper. This is a Moebius strip.
Activities:
  • Place the point of a pencil on the surface of the Moebius strip and draw a line (as down the center of a road) until you reach the end. Take a pair of scissors and snip a hold on this line, insert the scissors and carefully cut along the line drawn down the center of the Moebius strip. Construct another Moebius strip. Rather than cutting the strip down the center as in the last activity, cut 1/3 of the way from an edge.

Chess in a Moebius Strip
Take the Cylindrical 8 x 14 Variant . Why should the board be glued so nicely? Why not twist it before the glue? The board would still look like the picture below, however, along the 11th/12th (or -3rd/-2nd) junction, there would be a "inversion", so that a11 would join h12, b11 would join g12, and so on: All other rules (castling, en-passant, promotion, etc) apply. An interesting aspect of this board is that, while on most standard variants, the King is facing the other King, here, along the 8-9-10-11-12-13-14-15 board, each King is facing the opponent's Queen. The Moebius Strip is a non-oriented surface. While this concept can hardly apply to chess, a minor consequence is that the Bishops don't have a fixed colour: a bishop that starts in a "White" square (say, f1) can chance to a "Black" square (f1-a6-b12).

In the standard model, only neutrinos of a particular handedness can interact weakly with an electron. It is said that if the neutrino is massless (which now seems in doubt) then neutrinos only come in one handedness (I think "chirality" is the proper word). But is this really true? I was thinking about Mobius strips and non-orientable surfaces in general. I thought I heard someone say once that if the universe were a non-orientable surface, then it would be possible for an object to make a trip "around" the universe and thereby change its handedness. A right-hander could make the trip and become a lefty. So, I would think that a neutrino could make the trip and become a neutrino of opposite chirality. Am I right about this effect of travelling through a Mobius-like universe? If so, does that mean that the standard model is only consistent with a non-Mobius topology? Daryl McCullough CoGenTex, Inc. Thru the Moebius Strip
By Joe Fordham T o aficionados of the comic book and visual arts worlds, designer Jean Giraud Moebius needs little introduction. From his early comic strips for the French satirical magazine Hara-Kiri, through the creation of his Western hero Lieutenant Blueberry and the co-founding of Metal Hurlant magazine in 1975, Moebius became widely known for his elegant, highly detailed visual style and offbeat sense of humor. National Lampoon's Heavy Metal magazine, an American version of Metal Hurlant, brought Moebius' art to a wider stateside audience, particularly with his science fiction and fantasy stories Arzach and The Airtight Garage. Moebius became part of the design team involved with director Alejandro Jodorowsky's legendary attempted adaptation of Dune. The collapse of that legendary mid-'70s project led Moebius indirectly to a brief stint on Ridley Scott's Alien (1979), whose samurai-armored spacesuits bear a distinctly Moebius feel.

(continued from page 1) In the beginning I had one idea about an original kind of spaceship and it gave me some ideas for a story," Moebius said. "After I met with Raymond, he became the central person in charge of the money on the project and finding most of the people to work on the movie in France. We started talking to Frank and spent 10 days writing the story together, meeting every day with Frank taking notes." "Jean intuitively explained the story in much in the same way as a parent might tell a child a story, to entertain them," Foster said. "My job was to listen and try to help him piece together the various elements. It was magical the way it came together. I drafted that into a rough nine-page treatment, then presented this to our screenwriter, Jim Cox ( FernGully, The Rescuers Down Under ), who used that as the basis for his first draft. Last spring that draft was presented to Jean, who came to L.A. for a week, and he worked with Jim and me, making adjustments. When Jim completed that second draft, we started three months of pre-production."

Now extrude your line object along the moebius path. Use enough sections to get it as smooth as you desire. Also, set it so that the y is aligned to the path. Otherwise, it won't twist. What has been created is a flat moebius strip. If you want to have some thickness, you could extrude a 4point plane along the path(the y-axis for the plane should be perpendicular to the plane's surface). You may also want to add a 3rd point to the path by fracturing or splitting it. This will give you more control over the shape. If you add the 3rd point after doing the initial steps above, then you won't have to worry about rotating it on its local yaxis. * Subject: Easy Moebius Strip * Date: Tue, 7 Jun 1994 13:57:42 GMT +1200 [51] * From: "Paul Batten" <BATTENP@scico1.chchp.ac.nz> In the detail editor: 1. Add a closed path 2. Add a primitive plane, say 40x20 1 section 3. select the plane, choose Extrude: Along Path (the closed path in 1.), Align Y to Path, Sections = 100, Y Rotation = 180 ( to give the Moebius loop). Perform extrude. 4. You may need to edit the 8 faces where the 1st and last planes join, the seem to get twisted.

I was thinking about several things: How did Tyr alone survive the destruction of his Pride? Why his appearance changed several times during "Ouroboros"? And why his attitude towards humans in general and his crewmates in particular changed after that same episode? All this thinking brought me to this story. You all know the drill, the characters of Andromeda are not mine, they belong to whomever they belong, I just borrow them. Alexandra belongs to me. I guess you can call me a wonderer, a muser maybe. My mother labeled me "a free spirit" and my father thought I was a troublemaker. I could never stay long in one place; I could never decide what to do with my life. Correction, I knew what to do with it; I just couldn’t make up my mind on location and duration. So all this uncertainty and indecisions had finally got me here. Where *is* here somewhere in the mostly snowy part of Europe where the Institute of Quantum and Temporal Mechanics took residence several years ago. I am their physician. I was their best field medic until I messed up that mission. This boy is going to drive me to insanity! All I wanted to do was to get to my quarters and take a shower! Instead, I ended up almost blown out of the ship. And I hate Perseids! Finally the doors are locked and after I make it clear to Harper that I do not particularly care to be a subject in his experiments.

This is a (pseudo)-architectural problem proposed by Vincenzo Viviani, a disciple of Galileo, in 1692 (see , page 201, and [Roero1], [Roero2] for a complete and detailed treatment) formulated as follows: build on a hemispherical cupola four equal windows of such a size that the remaining surface can be exactly squared FIGURE An example of a realization of such a cupola can be admired in the interior of the basilica of San Fedele in Milan. FIGURE Thus Viviani's windows give rise to special spherical curves. However, in general, by
