This is a (pseudo)-architectural problem proposed by Vincenzo Viviani, a disciple of Galileo, in 1692 (see , page 201, and [Roero1], [Roero2] for a complete and detailed treatment) formulated as follows: build on a hemispherical cupola four equal windows of such a size that the remaining surface can be exactly squared FIGURE An example of a realization of such a cupola can be admired in the interior of the basilica of San Fedele in Milan. Its amazing properties arise from the fact that this strip of paper has only one edge and one side! 1. Cut a strip of paper 30cm x 5cm (or something like these proportions - it doesn’t need to be exact!) 2. Join the ends to make a hoop, but give the strip a half twist before you tape it together. 3. Draw a line along the centre of the strip. 4. Cut the strip in half along its length. How much bigger is your loop than the one you started with? How much bigger is the loop if you cut the strip into thirds, quarters? Can you draw on only one side of a Moebius strip?

MOEBIUS (or MÖBIUS) STRIP This activity combines an interesting geometric exercise with drawings of animals and their tracks. A Moebius strip is a one-edged geometric surface with only one continuous side, formed by giving a 180 degree twist to a narrow, rectangular strip of paper and then connecting the two ends together. It is named after a 19th century German mathematician. Materials: small strips of paper for trial Moebius strips strips of paper (a good size is 36" x 3" cut from big rolls of butcher paper, but strips of construction paper can be used as well) transparent tape construction paper drawing materials (paints, colored pencils, etc.) glue scissors reference books First practice making Moebius strips with small strips of paper. Form a loop with the strip of paper, placing the ends together. Now, make a twist in one end and tape the ends together. With a pencil, trace a line down the center of the strip. You will discover that your pencil mark meets up with the beginning of the line. You made a continuous plane when that half twist was made. Now that you see how a Moebius strip works, you can use it for a desert creature art project. 1) Chooses an animal you would like to draw. Use reference books for pictures of the animal as well as the tracks of that animal.

Moebius If you've never done this before, you should definitely try it out: take a trip of paper about an inch wide and a foot long. Hold the two ends and make one half-twist. Join the two ends (with a staple, tape, or glue). Now, starting anywhere on the strip, draw a line in the middle and follow the strip. After a while you should be right back to where you started. This in and of itself isn't very surprising-any circular strip will make this possible. What is cool about this is that both "sides" of the paper will have the line drawn across it. In other words, there is only side to this strip of paper! Argentinian film maker Gustavo Mosquera and his students present a grandiose vision in his film Moebius involving the Moebius strip described above, infinity, perpetual motion machines, metaphoric political statements, and general philosophy about life. Unfortunately a bit more research should've been done, in my view, to fully realise this vision. That said, Moebius does touch upon some interesting existential concepts that are probably better off explored by yourself within your own mind rather than being spoon-fed by a film.
