Interactive Math Journey
Math software so cool that it's hot! Interactive Math Journey gets my vote for the most comprehensive, hands-on approach to mathematics for kids (ages 5 through 9 years). Children are encouraged to solve problems and develop skills in five different math areas: patterns and shapes, addition and subtraction, measurement, fractions and multiplication. Children as young as 4 years old will enjoy this easy to use software. Unlike some math software, kids don't have to be coaxed into playing The Learning Company's Interactive Math Journey. Children love playing in the 10 culturally diverse Math Lands, which offer 25 challenging sequenced activities with progressive difficulty levels. State-of-the-art graphics and interesting music (without being obnoxious) makes Interactive Math Journey pleasant for parents, too! Best of all, the CD-ROM is a fun-filled exploration as kids follow Tallycat, the tour guide, in a search of the Math Magician. After signing in, kids will see a map of the 10 Math Lands they can visit. They can complete each Math Land in order or skip around. Playing games, listening to songs, reading math tales and solving math challenges earns math stars and souvenirs. The more math stars and souvenirs collected, the better the chances are that kids will find the Math Magician.

    Interactive Math Program at BHS
Interactive Math is an integrated high school math sequence that replaces the traditional Algebra-Geometry-Algebra2-PreCalculus sequence taught in most high schools. Students work on long term problems; developing, applying, and refining their mathematical skills along the way. Cooperative work is encouraged and learning is considerably more student-centered than teacher-centered as compared to the traditional sequence. Here are some quotes by IMP students (grade level is when the quote was made): "The IMP program introduces you to ways of thinking that conventional math programs do not. The skills that are learned in IMP through the assignments in each level are applicable in many more areas of life than just math. You learn how to analyze problems in different ways and work productively in groups with people who have different talents than you. Personally, I've found that after being in IMP, I'm more creative in my thought process and I am able to voice my thoughts in a more clear and concise fashion. Consequently, the people I work with in projects at college or the business world have a better understanding of what I am trying to say. I believe that IMP offers students a chance to grow as people and gain talents that will make them successful in high school, college, and life after college." B.R. BHS Alumnus "IMP is a great class for students who enjoy working with groups and on math projects. It's brain exhausting, but very worth it when we receive the results of a project" S.K. grade 10

    The California Math Show
The California Math Show is a portable, interactive math exhibit based on the idea of symmetry.
Visitors are encouraged to sit down and do things:
build symmetric polyhedra (another picture) out of snap-together pieces,
make symmetric patterns with pattern blocks stencils , rubber stamps, computer software
    color symmetric designs
cut out snowflakes and strings of paper dolls
get into a huge kaleidoscope (another picture) and become part of a symmetric pattern. The activities are for people of all levels, from 5-year-olds to research mathematicians. Children often spend over an hour at the exhibit. The activities seem to be equally appealing to girls and boys.
The entire exhibit fits into a station wagon, and can be put up by two people in an hour. Some of the show's materials were developed and adapted especially for the exhibit, but most can be purchased from companies that supply math education materials. In 1996, all the show's written materials are being translated into Spanish, for the benefit of California's many Spanish speakers. The California Math Show has traveled to schools, museums, teacher education seminars, and youth groups. Currently plans are being made to take the California Math Show to shopping malls, and to mount a replica of the Show as a permanent exhibit at the future Riverside Youth Museum.

    Content and Methodology
The Learning Company's Interactive Math Journey follows a design patterned after their highly regarded Interactive Reading Journey title. In IMJ , users set off on a journey to meet the "mathmagician" by completing 25 learning activities. These activities encompass five math concepts: patterns and shapes, addition and subtraction, measurement, fractions, and multiplication, Each concept is covered in two levels of difficulty. In the first level, IMJ presents a read-along story that explains the concepts and offers opportunities for trying them out. This is followed by a more rigorous exploration activity, and then a short rhyming song to reinforce the concepts. For example, in Patterns and Shapes, the first activity is a rhyming tale about symmetry. On every page of the tale, the user is asked to draw a line through a diagram that symmetrically bisects its contents. Incorrect answers result in funny noises; the right answer takes the user to the next page. The exploration activity which follows the read-along tale builds on the learning experience by having the user manipulate geometric shapes to create mirror images of drawings. These drawings are then assembled into a quilt, further emphasizing pattern replication and symmetry. "That's really cool," according to our nine year-old reviewer. "I'm going to do all of these." (To further enhance the hands-on experience
