Email hints:
The hardest thing about sending mathematics via email is that mathematics involves lots of notation that is not available on the computer keyboard. We need to establish some conventions to make this easier to do. Here are some ideas that should help:
  • Use " " to represent superscripts, as in " x^2 " for " x squared", and " x^(1/2) " for "the square root of x ". Use parentheses to avoid confusion about what belongs in the power. E.g., " x^(2n)+1 " rather than " x^2n + 1 " since this could be read incorrectly as either " (x^2)n + 1 " or " x^(2n+1)
  • As an alternative to using the 1/2 power, you can use the function " sqrt " for square roots. E.g., sqrt(2)
  • Use " " to represent subscripts, as in " " for " x sub i ". Use parentheses as above to make more complicated subscripts clear.
  • Use spaces around low-precedence operators like addition, subtraction and equals, but not around multiplication and division, as in " " rather than "
  • Use parentheses to make the numerator and denominator clear when you write fractions using " ", as in "

Advice From Spring 2001 Math 2000 Students The best way to get a good grade in this class is to keep up on the homework assignments. They are not hard if you just use the formulas. The lectures are not at all boring. You can actually learn some useful things. Also, the group work can really help your social life. This class is unlike any other math class you have ever taken. You’re expected to learn and be able to apply the information presented to you, but it’s done in a very low pressure comfortable way. Math is not your enemy and BB is a great ally against such a myth. Good luck. As someone who looked at math as some life-threatening disease that I would never want to catch, I was terrified to walk into class the first day. However, I can say that my knowledge of math has increased because of this class. The professor is always approachable and (as advice) go see him! Also, if you have a question ask! You will learn in this class. Just remember, the unit on permutations will end! Good luck! I can’t give you any advice about what it takes to become engaged and want to learn other than be sure to actually go to class and you should do fine. Different people learn different ways, so I can’t really tell you how to succeed. Just come in with an open mind and try to pay attention.

I agree, except for providing access from the very beginning. If
access can be provided which would never leave the blind user without

Can you give me more details? I certainly don't mind looking into

You can't use FPU operations in the x86 kernel.
Maybe you should do this in user space ? Certainly the more I talk to people
like Nicholas Pitre the more it seems to me that most of the kernel side
    stuff is the wrong approach.
Instead would it not be better to
    - Fix select on /dev/vcsa to work
    - During init start up after init processes are running have
the init tasks (or for that matter the kernel) fire up the
speech helper The fact 95% of the speakup drivers are going to spontaneously go obsolete the moment serial ports vanish bothers me.

    Exam Advice
    Trigonometry, Math 144Section 02
    Fall, 2001

The best way to prepare for an exam is to actually take one under the same circumstances as the real thing, just as musicians do dress rehearsals, football players play scrimmages, and athletes in general train under conditions similar to those they will play in, compete in, etc. Thus you should start by taking the test at the end of the chapter with a time limit of about 50 minutes and with no books or notes available and no distractions. This will help you identify the areas you most need to work on and thus make the time spent studying most effective It will generally be most productive per unit of study time for you to be actively working problems from the sections or from the Review Exercises and checking them. As you do so, focus on increasing speed and accuracy and avoid relying on the book or notes. This will help you arrive confident that you are ready to take the exam. You will probably also find it helpful to
    • understand and correct errors on old quizzes, organize the important material into your own outline or study guide, and/or
