The placement process
Most students entering Rutgers-NB are required to take the Rutgers Placement Test in Mathematics. This test determines readiness for the mathematics courses offered by the Rutgers-NB Mathematics Department. Exceptions to this rule are students presenting 4 or 5 on AP Calculus exams or certain transfer students. Transfer students who have passed with a grade of C or better either a Rutgers-NB math course equivalent or an approved course at the level of first semester calculus at another post-secondary institution are exempted from taking the math placement test. Approval can be given by the Head Mathematics Advisor (call 732-445-2390 for information). Students may not enroll in any mathematics course for which they have not met the prerequisites either by placing into the course by placement test , passing the prerequisite course at Rutgers-NB, or getting a C or better in a Rutgers-NB-approved equivalent prerequisite course at another college. Students scoring 4 or 5 on the AB AP Calculus exam may receive credit for first semester calculus and may begin with second semester calculus. Students scoring 4 or 5 on the BC AP Calculus exam may receive credit for the first two semesters of calculus and may begin with third semester calculus and/or linear algebra. While almost all mathematics placement advice needed by students new to Rutgers-NB is contained in this document, information regarding special circumstances may be obtained by consulting the Undergraduate Mathematics office by calling (732-445-2390) or by sending email to

A quote about practice for Math 291:01, spring 2003
... There have been many studies of elite performers concert violinists, chess grand masters, professional ice-skaters, mathematicians, and so forth and the biggest difference researchers find between them and lesser performers is the amount of deliberate practice they've accumulated. Indeed, the most important talent may be the talent for practice itself. K. Anders Ericsson, a cognitive psychologist and an expert on performance, notes that the most important role that innate factors play may be in a person's willingness to engage in sustained training. He has found, for example, that top performers dislike practicing just as much as others do. (That's why, for example, athletes and musicians usually quit practicing when they retire.) But, more than others, they have the will to keep at it anyway. (From "The Learning Curve" by Atul Gawande, an article on the training of surgeons which appeared on pages 52-61 of The New Yorker , January 28, 2002.)

I have some good advice to give any incoming Math 175 students. Going into this class, I expected the worse because of what I heard from fellow students and peers. I feared this class so much that I put it off until the end of my collegiate career. I had not taken a math class since my first semester freshman year and had not done anything related to Algebra or Calculus since my senior year of high school. So that was probably why I had my biggest fears. Before taking this class, I wish I would have known how much Algebra was a part of Calculus. I should have done some research on Calculus before I took the class, and it probably would have helped me. I did not even really think about it and nobody told me anything about it. If I would have known how much Algebra was a part of Calculus before taking this class, I could have least brushed up on my Algebra and practiced it. In addition, if I would have known that I could have audited an Algebra course to refresh my memory before taking this Calculus class. So as result of not knowing much Algebra, the first couple of weeks were tough and my grades reflected it.

Personally, and as part of a principal search and
evaluation team, it is highly unlikely that you would get a
principalship without putting in many years in the
classroom. Principals who have not been strong
teachers in the classroom lack credibility with their staff
and have their hands tied when it comes to seeking
cooperation or respect. A principal candidate who has been strong in the
classroom and spent time in "the trenches" has the
knowledge and skills to be a leader in curriculum and is
skillful in developing a "team atmosphere" within their building. The principal is not a manager - the principal of a building is supposed to be an educational leader. They need to have more experience with students, curriculum, and parents, than anyone else in the building. By the way - take a good look at the hours expected and the pay before assuming that principalship is such a "pie in the sky" job. Eileen Posts on this thread, including this one

Hello, I need some advice. I want to be a teacher, work
toward my Masters, get into administration, and work toward
my Ph.D. That's my goals in a nutshell. Step One is obtaining a teacher's license via the Praxis
Series. My B.S. Degree is in Business. I have been
advised by several people in my area that the ONLY demand
is for teachers certified in Science, Math, and/or
Elementary Ed. Can someone please advise me on the best,
if not the easiest, way in. Is it possible to begin at elementary and move into high-
    school? What should I do?

These quotes supplement an article of advice for selecting a doctoral program . Students responded to the question: "Knowing everything that you know now, what advice would you give others entering or in the early years of graduate school? " The quotes are sorted into six categories. Generally, there are a half dozen comments per category, the alternating colors are different student's comments. These categories were applied by us, as we read through the thousands of comments. They are the most common categories of advice pertaining to the selection of a doctoral program. The frequency with which various kinds of advice emerged varies by discipline. You can see the relative distribution here.

    Interpreting your CPT Test Score
The purpose of these Web pages is to enable you to determine appropriate mathematics courses for you. To use this page, you need your scores on the math test(s) that you took. There are three mathematics tests: Arithmetic, Elementary Algebra, and College Math. All students should have a score on the middle test - Elementary Algebra. Most of our placement rules use this score. If you feel that your ACC Assessment Test score does not really reflect your current skill level or that the advice we are giving is not appropriate for you, please feel free to talk with an advisor, either in the Advising Center or in the mathematics department. On the Web, you can look at a discussion of what the advisor will explore with you.
  • Elementary Algebra CPT score is 0-38 Course Placement recommendation is Basic Math Skills, MATD 0330. Elementary Algebra CPT score is 39-60. Course placement recommendation is Elementary Algebra, MATD 0370, or Topics in Developmental Math, MATD 0360, depending on your educational goals. Elementary Algebra CPT score is 61-120 To explore your options, please read further. Choose either a developmental or college-level math course appropriate for your educational goal and mathematics background.

    Q. Whenever my first-grader has a math test, he scores rather poorly. I know he knows the answers. He does all his homework correctly and does the same problems with me at home correctly. I do not want to make a big deal about the grades to him, but I don’t want him to fail just because of these test scores. I know he can do it. Any ideas on how to help him without making him feel bad. A. Your son may feel under more pressure when he has to answer math problems on a test at school. You can help him get accustomed to tests by doing practice ones at home with him. Remember to present the problems like he will see them at school. This means if the teacher hands him a piece of paper with questions on it, you need to do it in the same way and not give him problems orally. Also, you should set the same time limits as the teacher does. His answers may not be as quick as they should be. To turn things around, find out from his teacher exactly what your son’s weaknesses in math are. Also, see if the teacher can give you tips that will help him do better on math tests. Then you can work with your child to build his skills and to prepare for future tests.
