Winter 2003
Peter Selinger
Some advice from previous students:
In the past six years, at the time of course evaluations, students have been asked to offer any advice they might have for new students who are just beginning the course. Here are some of their comments: "this course is not like OAC Algebra, so get with it from the start or you'll have great difficulty later..." "the more you work in January, the less you have to worry in April..." "ask questions and consult with your classmates..." "do the assigned questions..." "do all the problems..." "do more than the assigned questions: often, test questions come straight out of the book..." "ask questions..." "get your questions answered! ..." "go to the problem sessions! ..." "don't fall behind..." "allow lots, I mean lots of time for studying..." "attending problem sessions is practically mandatory..." "wear baseball caps low over the forehead. It helps to hide you when you fall asleep..." "no matter how bored you are, attend all the classes..."

Advice for Students
Introduction Math Careers Which Option in the Major? Which of the five areas (teaching, grad school, engineering, computer science, and statistics) you choose might help determine the option in the mathematics major that suits you best. Secondary teachers would probably want the single subject waiver program; those interested in grad school would probably choose the pure major (maybe not if they already know the area of mathematics they want to emphasize in grad school); those interested in engineering would probably want the emphasis in applied mathematics and statistics; those interested in computer science would probably choose the double major in math and computer science or the emphasis in applied math and statistics; those interested in statistics would probably want the emphasis in applied math and statistics. Advising Advisors are faculty members who are knowledgeable about the program you have chosen in mathematics. It is important that you pay your advisor a visit during your first semester at CSUS, if only to make contact. It is a good idea to see your advisor frequently, for help in planning your schedule, career planning, or for other advice. It is very important that you see your advisor when you plan your upper division coursework, as there are many decisions that your advisor can help you with that are not obvious from reading the catalog (e.g., which courses take a great time commitment, which courses are better in your senior year, etc.). If you decide to change major advisors, simply get the OK from your new advisor and tell the department office about your desire to change.

Women in Math (WIM) is an organization at the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP). WIM is dedicated to serving the needs of women mathematicians at UMCP. In order to fulfill that purpose, WIM members have organized a number of events. Two ongoing activities are monthly lunch get-togethers and biweekly graduate women talks . We also have an electronic newsletter for our members. This WWW page is WIM's latest endeavor. It is our goal that this page will include information or links to information in the following categories:
  • Scholarships, Conferences, etc. Women in Mathematics Women in Computer Science, Physics, or Engineering Advice for Graduate Students in Math or Other Scientific Disciplines ...
  • Pictures are now available from the 2nd Annual WIM picnic held in June! It was a great chance for students, faculty and staff from our department to talk over sub sandwiches and watermelon.
I will always be on the lookout for new links to add. If you know of any, please let me know by sending e-mail to me at wim@math.umd.edu

Mathematics 181ABC, Multivariable Calculus: Advice, Attendance, Exam Schedule, Grades and Honesty Policy
    Advice on Collaborative Work
Be prepared. Prior to meeting do the readings and think about the problems. Listen carefully and with respect to each other. Criticize ideas but do not criticize people. Contribute to the assignment solutions. Everyone has this responsibility. Ask for help when you need it. Give help when it is requested. Never agree to something you don1t understand in a group submission.
    Class Attendance
You cannot be an effective member of your assignment group nor laboratory pair unless you are an effective and involved member of the class. You cannot be an effective and involved member of the class unless you are present.
    Examination Schedule
Two examinations will be given during the term as well as a final examination at the end of the semester. All will emphasize the conceptual aspects of the course as opposed to the strictly computational. The dates (evenings) for these exams are: First Exam: Thursday, October 5, 7:00 pm. Second Exam: Thursday, November 16, 7:00 pm. Final Exam: Friday, December 15, 2:00 pm.
    Course Grade
Grades will be given for each daily individual assignment and collaborative project. In addition, each lab will require a short critique that will be collected and graded. The course grade will be determined by these grades and the exam grades as follows:

Meredyth, Run to your local bookstore or used book store and try to
obtain a copy of a boko called MATH MAGIC. this book is
great!!! I wish I had it while I was in school - I'm sure my grades
would have been better. THis guy truely makes math learnign FUN. He takes a rather
radical approach to math - OK so its not what they teach you
in school, but if you get to the right answer (faster) whats
the differnce. I think its time for a change in the education system anyway! Bernie

You may want to plan on doing your math homework in the LAC so that when you are stuck on a problem or don't understand a new concept, help is available. Steps for doing Math Assignments
  • Review previous material before beginning to work on new, more advanced, assignments. Then read the new material that relates to your assignment. Review your lecture notes from class. Fill in any notes you didn't follow easily, using the text, an instructor, or a classmate. You'll avoid the frustration later of not understanding your notes. Add any additional info from your book that will help you better understand your class notes. Review - and mark - the most important parts of the lecture.
