  • Kids Discover the Value of Learning Through Hands-On 'Hammer' Time
When master carpenter Perry Wilson showed his friend's son how to build a tree house, he discovered that he was really teaching the child the value of mathematics. The task brought to mind his own struggles with a learning disability and the failure of his school to help him realize his potential. As a result, Wilson quit his job and established If I Had a Hammer, a program that uses alternative methods, specifically the construction of a small house, to show kids how to put the material they are learning in school to work.

Maths problems
This site currently includes about 3,700 olympiad problems and about 900 other problems. I have given solutions for about 1,300 Olympiad problems (and almost all the Putnam problems). My ultimate objective is to include a wide variety of interesting problems of all levels of difficulty. In general, I have no interest in pure bookwork problems. Two features about the site are unusual. The first is that I strive for completeness. There are often many sites that give the last few years' problems for an olympiad, but this is usually the only site that gives all the problems. The second is that I try to put up solutions. Inevitably solutions will lag the problems, maybe by years! Ideas for other problem sets that could be included are always welcome. However, I want to include complete sets. I have problems sets for several national olympiads for recent years, but I am waiting until I can get the earlier years before I put them up. Corrections etc are even more welcome!

Welcome. April is Math Awareness Month. The Mathematics Department of Anne Arundel Community College has planned several activities to help the community be aware of mathematics. On Thursday, April 6 th , Professor Robyn Russow will present Mathemagic. Her magical feats will involve mathematics. Her performance will be held in the science lecture hall, room 110, of the Dragun Building. Dr. S. Brent Morris, Senior Mathematician at the National Security Agency, will present "Magic Tricks, Card Shuffling, and Dynamic Computer Memories" from 2:30 to 3:30 in the science lecture hall, room 110, of the Dragun Building. This talk begins with a magic trick and a scientific analysis of card tricks. This leads to a brief study of card scuffling and the introduction of the perfect shuffle and its mathematics. Formulas are developed that describe the movement of any card in a deck after any sequence of perfect shuffles, and this in turn is used to design a dynamic computer memory. Finally, we show the accessing algorithm for the dynamic memory, the movement formula for perfect shuffles, and the card trick all use the same mathematical principle. Attendees should bring a deck of cards to the talk. Mathematics projects will be exhibited in various places around campus. There will be a display in the foyer of the Florestano Building, the Careers Building Rotunda, and in other locations on campus.
