8. Are The Digits Of Pi Random? Berkeley Lab Researcher May Hold Key
An article by Paul Preuss about new research outcome at the Berkeley Lab.Category Science Math Recreations Specific Numbers Pi Digits...... In fact, not a single naturally occurring math constant has been provednormal in even one number base, to the chagrin of mathematicians.
http://www.lbl.gov/Science-Articles/Archive/pi-random.html
July 23, 2001
BERKELEY, CA — David H. Bailey, chief technologist of the Department of Energy's National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and his colleague Richard Crandall, director of the Center for Advanced Computation at Reed College, Portland, Oregon, have taken a major step toward answering the age-old question of whether the digits of pi and other math constants are "random." Their results are reported in the Summer 2001 issue of Experimental Mathematics. Pi, the ubiquitous number whose first few digits are 3.14159, is irrational, which means that its digits run on forever (by now they have been calculated to billions of places) and never repeat in a cyclical fashion. Numbers like pi are also thought to be "normal," which means that their digits are random in a certain statistical sense. Describing the normality property, Bailey explains that "in the familiar base 10 decimal number system, any single digit of a normal number occurs one tenth of the time, any two-digit combination occurs one one-hundredth of the time, and so on. It's like throwing a fair, ten-sided die forever and counting how often each side or combination of sides appears."

Math Surprises: An Example
August 2001 Compte de Buffon (1707-1788) in the 18 th century posed and solved the very first problem of geometric probability. A needle of a given length L is tossed on a wooden floor with evenly spaced cracks, distance D apart. What is the probability of the needle hitting a crack? The answer he discovered with the help of integral calculus is given by the simple formula [ Beckmann Eves Kasner Paulos ... Stein P = 2L/ p D With P approximated by the ratio of hits to the total number of tosses, the formula offers a way of evaluating p , an observation that eventually led Pierre Simon Laplace (1749-1827) to propose a method, known today as the Monte Carlo Method, for numerical evaluation of various quantities by realizing appropriate random events. History records several names of people who applied the method manually to approximate p . A Captain Fox [ Beckmann , p. 77] mentions Wolf from Zurich (1850) who obtained

Much of my research is devoted to constant mean curvature (cmc) surfaces, in particular the construction of examples. Constant mean curvature surfaces appear in nature, in particular when the area of an interface is minimized under a volume constraint. Soap bubbles are the most popular example: The photos show Tom Noddy at the International Congress 1998 (courtesy of J. Sullivan ). Mathematicians have used the following methods to construct constant mean curvature surfaces: Kapouleas produced surfaces close to some degenerate well known surfaces with a singular perturbation approach; Pinkall, Sterling, and many others found tori as solutions of an integrable system (a more general approach by Dorfmeister, Pedit and Wu remains to be exploited); and the Lawson-Karcher conjugate cousin method yields sufficiently symmetric surfaces. What is pi ( )? Who first used pi? How do you find its value? What is it for? How many digits is it?
By definition, pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi is always the same number, no matter which circle you use to compute it. For the sake of usefulness people often need to approximate pi. For many purposes you can use 3.14159, which is really pretty good, but if you want a better approximation you can use a computer to get it. Here's pi to many more digits: 3.14159265358979323846. The area of a circle is pi times the square of the length of the radius, or "pi r squared": A = pi*r^2 A very brief history of pi
Pi is a very old number. We know that the Egyptians and the Babylonians knew about the existence of the constant ratio pi, although they didn't know its value nearly as well as we do today. They had figured out that it was a little bigger than 3; the Babylonians had an approximation of 3 1/8 (3.125), and the Egyptians had a somewhat worse approximation of 4*(8/9)^2 (about 3.160484), which is slightly less accurate and much harder to work with. For more, see A History of Pi by Petr Beckman (Dorset Press).

While studying Pi with Gillian, Gareth, and Zaamen, my math group from Tracy's class at Metropolitan Learning Center, I started to generate images with the digits of Pi. Four examples are presented here. In this version, a color value is assigned to each of the digits 0-9 to make this pretty picture. Thanks to David Blatner for his book and website The Joy of Pi for 112 digits of Pi. Now, would anyone like more Pi

19. Constant Perimeter And Area Rectangles

Constant Perimeter and Constant Area Rectangles
The interactive Java animations below accompany the article "Theorems in Motion: Using Dynamic Geometry to Gain Fresh Insights" by Daniel Scher in the April 1996 issue of the Mathematics Teacher . The article shows how dynamic geometry software can be used to construct constant perimeter and constant area rectangles . We define these terms as follows:
  • constant perimeter rectangle: a rectangle whose dimensions can change but perimeter remains fixed. constant area rectangle: a rectangle whose dimensions can change but area remains fixed.
  • A Constant Perimeter Rectangle
The interactive picture below shows a point that divides a fixed length into a red and a blue segment. Use your mouse to click on the red point and move it back and forth along along the red/blue segment. You'll notice that the length and width of the accompanying rectangle adjust themselves to remain equal to the red and blue segments. Since the sum of the red and blue segments is constant, the perimeter of the rectangle is also constant.
Constant Area Rectangles The interactive picture below shows a circle along with a chord composed of a red and a blue segment. Use your mouse to click on the red endpoint of the chord and move it around the circumference of the circle. You'll notice that the chord pivots around the fixed red point within the circle. The power-of-a-point theorem tells us that the product of the red and blue segments remains constant as the chord pivots.
