Trying to Find Culturally Different Criteria for Decision-making Encourages Students to Use English as a Means to Achieve an End and Develops Their Communicative Skills as a By-product
    Masakazu KARITA
1. The Rationale for Students' Seeking Culturally Different Criteria for Decision-making The studies (Karita,1995, 1996) have shown that the students at HDU are interested in the international community and that to be more specific they are interested in different values or criteria for decision-making. Of course, they do like to use English as a communicative tool and enjoy their communicational activities with other people who have different cultural backgrounds. With both the two together, they are assuming to learn that people with different cultural backgrounds have different values, views, and thoughts, which would lead them to discover different life styles and widen their personal scope through English communicational activities. And hopefully the students would gain their communicative skills, the by-product, as they try to find culturally different criteria for decision-making. 2. Focus on Students' Questions or Hypotheses Rather than Providing Them with Unified Themes

Previous Next Index Products This chapter introduces some of the commercial products, developing tools, and ongoing speech synthesis projects available today. It is clear that it is not possible to present all systems and products out there, but at least the most known products are presented. Some of the text in this chapter is based on information collected from Internet, fortunately, mostly from the manufacturers and developers official homepages. However, some criticism should be bear in mind when reading the "this is the best synthesis system ever" descriptions from these WWW-sites. First commercial speech synthesis systems were mostly hardware based and the developing process was very time-consuming and expensive. Since computers have become more and more powerful, most synthesizers today are software based systems. Software based systems are easy to configure and update, and usually they are also much less expensive than the hardware systems. However, a stand alone hardware device may still be the best solution when a portable system is needed. The speech synthesis process can be divided in high-level and low-level synthesis. A low-level synthesizer is the actual device which generates the output sound from information provided by high-level device in some format, for example in phonetic representation. A high-level synthesizer is responsible for generating the input data to the low-level device including correct text-preprocessing, pronunciation, and prosodic information. Most synthesizers contain both, high and low level system, but due to specific problems with methods, they are sometimes developed separately.

CALIFORNIA COLLEGES FOR INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION NEWSLETTERS - 1997 - 1998 Return to Home Page SEPTEMBER OCTOBER NOVEMBER DECEMBER ... APRIL MAY JUNE Vol. 7 No. 8 APRIL 1998 International Education Update MAX KING FIRED One of the most powerful forces in community college international education lost his job, February 16. Dr. Maxwell King, President of Brevard College, was sent into retirement at the age of 70 due to a negative state audit of college activities. These involved several peripheral organizations that operated as private support groups for the College in Florida. The Board of Trustees voted 3 to 2 to end the career of a strong, "old school" type leader who had built Brevard into one of the first rank community colleges in the country. King, also, has been the single most important factor in the development of Community Colleges for International development, a consortium of twenty-one members and forty-one affiliates dedicated to assisting developing nations and promoting international understanding. STUDY ABROAD LIABILITY RELEASE FORMS In scheduling study abroad classes, a college needs to consider seriously all issues regarding liability. The following is a note from Gary Rhodes at USA that appeared on our NAFSA Lsitserv recently.

Between having to exist in a High School where things like Negro Appreciation Month can and do occur, and having to watch all these nigged girls come to the realization that they’re nigged, and then have to watch how it now bothers them as well (when it used bother just other people), and just generally having to watch a bunch of other horribly sad things at My High School every single day causes me to become concerned, it can be pretty sh**y.
I try not to let these things bother me too much, but whenever I get to thinking about these things they always end up disturbing me. I’ve now decided that my being disturbed is just as valid and just as justified as being disturbed by anything else (not only the pc “acceptable” causes are valid) , and if something is bothering me I should at least be able to say it.
Well my suspension/expulsion lasted into the summer (there were only two weeks of school left anyways). About ten days before the start of school I found out that now I was to go back to the school. I went back, absolutely unsure of what it was going be like, and it turned out not all that bad. In some way’s things have gotten a lot better. I think it has to do at least partially with my being so openly racist. Being open about anything can affect someone in a positive way. I’ve had a taste of freedom, I can say things and this amounts to me being able to stand in the face of all those disturbing things. Openness is important. I’m just generally better off by being open. Although I may strategically turn into a closet racist when I go to college because I figure I am probably going to need a college degree.

Swedish rapsody in gold
Nordiske mestre i Damerækken: Eva-Liss Göthe, Madeleine Swanström, Pia Anderson, Lena Kärrstrand, Jill Mellström (PC), Kerstin Strandberg (Coach). Nordiske mestre i Åben Række: Magnus Eriksson, Peter Fredin, Anders Morath, Sven-Åke Bjerregård, Magnus Lindkvist, Göran Lindberg, Tommy Gullberg (NPC).

Best play: Suvi Marttila, Finland.
A squeeze in 3 suits one opponent was squeezed between two stoppers and an exit card. The powerful squeeze put an end to the defense, before the fourth trick was given up. (Bul.#4). Journalist prize: Jill Mellström, Sweden.
