I am a Special Education teacher in Highlands County and I was very pleased to hear that the legislature has set aside money for recruitment and retention of Math, Science, ESE and Foreign language teachers. Unfortunately, my county has decided not to participate in the program, probably because they don't want the state to know why teachers are leaving. I would like to hear from teachers in other counties as to whether they are getting the bonus or not. Tim Murphy Sebring High School murph1@strato.net I am going to be teaching for the first time. I will be a 7th grade homeroom teacher. I would greatly appreciate any ideas anyone has for meeting my students for the first time, i.e. ice breakers or fun ideas for our first day!!! ANY suggestions would be appreciated!!! Thanks! Melanie I'm a temporarily side-tracked educator working on building festival-related (FREE) on-line activities and curriculum materials about holidays, music fests, arts, culture, science, sports, whatever. I want to know how teachers (and kids!) are choosing and using internet curriculum materials and/or activities pages.

In 1992, Mattel Toys put the first talking Barbie doll on the market. Barbie's first words were, "Math class is tough." Mattel thought they were simply expressing the feelings of most school-age girls. Many parents and teachers, though, thought Barbie should keep her mouth shut. As a result, Barbie stopped talking. Dynamic Math with WebEQ
When we say "dynamic math" we mean equations that interact with the reader in some way. There are many different possible kinds of interactivity. Below are some of the main kinds of dynamic math you can put in a Web page with WebEQ.
Equation Actions
Equation actions give authors a way to trigger some visual change such as a highlight in an equation when the reader clicks or moves the mouse over a particular expression. Actions are specified via the WebEQ Viewer Control's MathML input parameter, and automatically work when the equation is displayed with the Viewer Control. Equation actions are the simplest way to add interactivity. You can author equation actions conveniently with both WebEQ Editor and WebEQ Publisher. Try the examples below to learn more:
Equations that Respond to HTML Controls
The next most basic category of interactivity involves hooking up an equation with other HTML controls in the page, such as buttons, pulldown menus and text areas. This kind of interactivity requires authors to write JavaScript code which is executed when the reader changes one of the controls. The WebEQ Viewer and Input Controls both have extensive JavaScript APIs, so script authors can control nearly every aspect of their displays by writing JavaScript handler functions. Try the following example to see this kind of interactivity in action.

    November 5, 1997
Web posted at: 9:20 p.m. EST (0220 GMT) WASHINGTON (AP) American students are doing better in math and science, but fewer high school seniors read well, according to a report released Wednesday. It also said schools still have problems with drugs and discipline. The seventh annual report of the National Education Goals Panel noted progress on several fronts: More parents read or tell stories to their 3- to 5-year-olds. More people, including women and minority students, are getting degrees in mathematics and science. That progress was tempered by problems with drug use, discipline and violence at schools, a drop in participation in adult education and a lack of teachers with academic backgrounds in subjects they teach.

"As encouraging as these improvements are, we also know there is much more work to be done," said Gov. James B. Hunt of North Carolina, the panel's chairman. The panel comprises eight governors, four members of Congress, four state legislators, Education Secretary Richard Riley and his senior adviser, Carol H. Rasco. Among findings, compiled from numerous studies, national examinations and surveys:
