Math Quotes
The danger already exists that the mathematicians have made a covenant with the devil to darken the spirit and to confine man in the bonds of hell. - St. Augustine Mathematics is the queen of the sciences and number theory is the queen of Mathematics. - Carl Friedrich Gauss Sophie Germain proved to the world that even a woman can accomplish something in the most rigorous and abstract of sciences. - Carl Friedrich Gauss God does arithmetic. - Carl Friedrich Gauss Thou, nature, art my goddess; to thy laws my services are bound... - William Shakespeare [King Lear] Mathematical discoveries, like springtime violets in the woods, have their season which no human can hasten or retard. - Carl Friedrich Gauss Like the ski resort full of girls hunting for husbands and husbands hunting for girls, the situation is not as symmetrical as it may seem. - Alan Mackay The greatest unsolved theorem in mathematics is why some people are better at it than others. - Adrian Mathesis Logic does not apply to the real world. - Marvin Minsky

42. Math Quotes
Who would have suspected a math teacher of being so devious? Is it a religious MaybeI should just spit on the board? The next several quotes deal with his

Yes, we already know how to do derivatives:
"Oh. You already know this? Then why am I doing this?"
On his inability to make out his own notes:
"What is this? Oh. I don't know what this is..."
"In my notes, I wrote '2+14=18'."
After realizing that the example he just did on the board was utterly bogus:
"If you buy that, I have an old car I want to sell you."
Once more, unable to know what he is doing:
"Cos... what!?"
A good reason to stop class early:
"I think I'm getting some harmful radiation from this projector, so I think I'll stop for today." Telling us that we will not have class on Monday after our test on the Friday before: "I have this... premonition... that I'm not going to be feeling good the Monday after the exam." "Even if you are asked to simplify, you could always refuse..." Another reason to stop class: "Alright, well, I just ran out of examples... *shrug* so..." Notes written on the board. Ah yes, evalation... "Countour lines: curves joining points at equal evalation" Talking about needing to show work on a test, keeping in mind that he is the only person who grades our tests:

Cool Math Quotes
Like the crest of a peacock so is mathematics at the head of all knowledge.
-An old Indian saying.
In the company of friends, writers can discuss their books, economists the state of the economy, lawyers their latest cases, and businessmen their latest acquisitions, but mathematicians cannot discuss their mathematics at all. And the more profound their work, the less understandable it is.
-Alfred Adler
...the music's pure algebra of enchantment.
Conrad Aiken[At a musical concert]
Mathematics is not a careful march down a well-cleared highway, but a journey into a strange wilderness, where the exlporers often get lost. Rigor should be a signal to the historian that the maps have been made, and the real explorers have gone elsewhere.
-W.S. Anglin
How happy the lot of the mathematician. He is judged solely by his peers, and the standard is so high that no colleague or rival can ever win a reputation he does not deserve.
-Auden, W. H.
In mathematics I can report no deficiency, except that it be that men do not sufficently understand the use of the Pure Mathematics. -Francis Bacon For the things of this world cannot be made known without a knowledge of mathematics.

Quotes About Math
"It is much easier for a mathematician to read a physics book after the physics becomes obsolete, and that is in fact what usually happens." -Gian-Carlo Rota "As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality." -ALBERT EINSTEIN "In mathematics whatever you learn is yours and you build up- one step at a time. It's not like a real- time game of winning and losing. You win if you benefit from the power, rigor, and beauty of mathematics." -Dr. Fan Chung "Mathematics, the non-empirical science par excellence... the science of sciences, delivering the key to those laws of nature and the universe which are concealed by appearances." -Hannah Arendt "Gifted expositors of mathematics are rare, indeed rarer than successful researchers. It is unfortunate that they are not reward as they deserve, in our present idiotic pecking order." -Gian-Carlo Rota "Mathematicians, like Proust and everyone else, are at their best when writing about their first love."

My current mathematical interests revolve around the Artin primitive root conjecture and the density of prime divisors of sequences. Some of the works on the latter subject are joint with
    Peter Stevenhagen
(University of Leiden), with some further works being in progress. Hans Roskam (also at Leiden) is working on this kind of problems as well (for his PhD). An easy readable introduction to prime divisors of sequences is C. Ballot, Density of prime divisors of linear recurrences, Memoirs of the AMS (1995), pp. 102. In collaboration with Steven Finch and Gerhard Niklasch we are evaluating constants of the primes with 1000 decimal accuracy. A famous example is provided by the Artin constant for which f(x)=1 and g(x)=x(x-1). The results are collected by Gerhard Niklasch and can be found
