    WeBWork is a software package being used by the high school for the first time this year. The program, offered through Ohio State University, allows students to tackle college calculus problems via the Internet. The program is not part of the grade that students receive in their calculus class. But it does help students who plan to take the Advanced Placement test in May. Students who earn a 3 or higher, out of a possible 5, can receive college credit.

    Tracy Leigh Phelps is from Palm Bay Florida. She just graduated with a major in mathematics and a second major in Environmental studies. Presently touring Europe with several of her Brevard College colleagues, she is in the process of choosing between the University of Arizona and Colorado State University to begin graduate school in the Spring 2001. Tracy loves numerical analysis. She participated in the 2000 Mathematical Contest in Modeling sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP). Under a National Science Foundation grant, she performed research at the U. Delaware's Marine Science program, applying mathematical modeling techniques to the ecological problems of estuarine flow. This past Fall, she conducted one of the colloquia in the Brevard College mathematical Colloquium Series, presenting her techniques and results from the U. Delaware research. Her senior research modeled the meandering process of streams.
    Isaac Bradley was born and bred in Brevard, North Carolina. He came to the college as a senior in high school, dual enrolled in Calculus classes. At that time his goal was to become an engineer and Brevard College seemed the best place to begin. "The location, the small class sizes, the accessibility of the professors, and the strength of the mathematics program here all appeal to me. I love climbing, paddling, mountaineering.     Susan Osterhaus, Chris Weaver, and Marie Amerson with Mary Ann Siller, project coordinator Since 1998, the AFB (American Foundation for the Blind) Textbooks and Instructional Materials Solutions Forum has sought to identify ways to ensure that students with visual impairments receive learning materials in accessible formats at the same time their peers receive the materials in print. Various AFB Solutions Forum stakeholders have been active in projects that help provide accessible textbooks for children with visual impairments and make life easier for their teachers. One important development to achieve this goal is the creation of braille conversion software that is designed to work with files from a print math editing program. The graphical nature of mathematical and scientific notation, along with special braille codessuch as Nemeth Code, the braille code for mathematicsneeded to represent complicated formulas, have presented unique problems in the delivery of accessible textbooks for mathematics and science instruction. Existing software that converts print mathematics into Nemeth Code requires mathematics to be written in a computer language that is unambiguous in its presentation of mathematical structures in order to correctly generate Nemeth Code. However, many computer languages that are used to represent mathematics provide only a recipe to draw the mathematics and do not provide explicit information on mathematical structure, which is vital information for the production of accurate Nemeth Code.

    Local Math Students Invited to Compete in National ARML
    May 30, 2001Three local students from Urbana High School (UHS) have been invited to participate in the American Regions Math League (ARML) as members of the Indiana state team. ARML is an annual national mathematics competition in which teams of 15 high school students represent their city, state, county, or school in competing amongst the best students from the United States and Canada. This year, ARML will be held on June 2, 2001, and will occur simultaneously at three sites: The University of Iowa, The Pennsylvania State University, and San Jose State University. The event consists of Team, Power, Individual, and Relay rounds and usually takes place the first Saturday after Memorial Day. Wolfram Research has covered expenses for the UHS students to participate at the Iowa site. The three students, Yana Malysheva, Luis Mendes, and Ho Young Whang, were asked to participate based upon their outstanding performance in other regional and statewide math competitions this year, specifically by organizers of the Rose-Hulman High School Mathematics Contest in which the UHS math team placed third overall. Young Whang and Malysheva, who are both recent UHS graduates, were also members of the UHS eight-person, Junior-Senior team that took second place in both the ICTM Regional and the ICTM State Math Contests.

    Mathematics and Statistics students at GVSU have many opportunities to become active within our department. We have a very active Mathematics and Statistics Club that is a recognized student MAA chapter and has undertaken many activities. During the 1998-1999 academic year, these included inviting several outside speakers to give career-related presentations to the club, organizing the first Michigan Undergraduate Mathematics Conference, organizing problem solving sessions, creating a majors' guide, and engaging in a variety of social activities (e.g. a golf scramble, a barbecue, ultimate frisbee, and a euchre tournament). Students within the department are also involved with faculty in undergraduate research projects. These include projects funded by the university's Summer Undergraduate Research Program, statistical consulting, and independent studies. Finally, the department recognizes the outstanding academic achievement of its students through student awards, student scholarships, and our chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon.

Competing As A Class If you would like to have your math class compete in the '2003 Online Math Madness', you can register them as a group. Provided the class has at least 10 students, the cost is $3.00 per student, otherwise, the cost is $5.00 per student. Click the 'Register' link for registration details. We recommend that this competition be used as a classroom activity for Algebra II, Advanced Math, or Pre-Calculus classes. The competition may also be used in Geometry classeshowever, some of the problems will be beyond the scope of your students' studies.     "The 2001 regional finalists coming to MIT were chosen from over 1000 student applicants nationwide," said Albert Hoser, chairman and CEO of the Siemens Foundation. "These students represent some of the best math and science students nationwide and the Siemens Foundation commends their dedication to the advancement of science and technology."
    The Siemens Foundation has partnered with six prestigious institutions to assist in judging and hosting the regional competitions throughout the fall: University of California, Berkeley and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (November 2-4); University of Notre Dame and Georgia Institute of Technology (November 9-11); and Carnegie Mellon University and The University of Texas at Austin (November 16-18). "Promoting science, mathematics and technological excellence throughout all of our educational systems is of critical importance to our society," said Charles Vest, president of MIT. "The Siemens Westinghouse Science & Technology Competition is an excellent means of accomplishing that.     Led by the stellar performance of freshman Reid W. Barton, the MIT team finished second for the second consecutive year in the prestigious William Lowell Putnam intercollegiate mathematics competition.
    Barton, who is from Arlington, finished in the top five, earning a Putnam Fellowship. Other members of the three-person MIT team were senior Abhinav Kumar of India and junior Pavlo M. Pylyavskyy of the Ukraine, both math majors. The MIT team members averaged 75 out of a possible 120. No one achieved a perfect score.
    The annual competition, inaugurated in 1938, traditionally takes place on the first Saturday in December. Students from universities in the United States and Canada tackle 12 problems worth 10 points apiece in two three-hour sessions. Prior to the competition, each university designates three participants as members of its team.

NCSALL Home Accommodating Math Students with Learning Disabilities by Rochelle Kenyon There may be more learning-disabled students in your math class than you realize. If you have learners who read numbers backwards, have trouble telling time, confuse part– whole relationships, have difficulty keeping score in a game, and have difficulty remembering math facts, concepts, rules, formulas, sequences, and procedures, they may be learning disabled. According to the National Adult Literacy and Learning Disabilities Center, “it is estimated that 50 percent to 80 percent of students in Adult Basic Education and literacy programs are affected by learning disabilities,” (1995, p. 1). The implications of such a staggering statistic for the adult basic education (ABE) teacher are worth further investigation. In this article, we will look at some common profiles of learning disabled learners and strategies you can use in your math class to meet their specific learning needs.
