Module 8, JavaScript for math teachers. We estimate that the work for this modulewill take participating teachers an average of about 3040 hours to complete.
http://mtl.math.uiuc.edu/modules/javascript/js_what_to_do.htm
Step-By-Step Instructions Module #8 JavaScript for Math Teachers We estimate that the work for this module will take participating teachers an average of about 30-40 hours to complete. Technically, you have a 3-month enrollment period to complete the module after you enroll. However, we recommend that you complete the module in eight weeks or less. That should easily be possible even when you are teaching if you set aside four or five hours each week to work on the module. NOTE: Please do not use special web page generators such as PageMill, FrontPage, or Composer to create your assignments. You will not get credit for assignments if you do this. Write all HTML by hand using a text editor such as Notepad or SimpleText. STEP #1
After you register, you will receive a UserActive login and password via E-mail . If you do not receive them within a week, contact us at: javascript@mtl.math.uiuc.edu
Do NOT try to get a login and password on your own! You MUST receive them through us.
1) Go through UserActive Lessons 1 through 4
2) Be sure to complete all Quizzes and Objectives for those Lessons and hand them in online as instructed.

Participants in the debates on math education argue about many things, but they seem to agree on at least one idea: math teachers should know math, the more the better. Unfortunately, many math teachers in the United States have not studied math much beyond the classes they teach. Others have, but found that college-level mathematics courses are not all that related to the material they teach. One solution lies in developing preservice and inservice education that helps teachers develop more depth of understanding of pre-college math. Zalman Usiskin considers this field a part of applied math, and calls it "Teachers' Mathematics". Ideally, each math teacher and each math department would be engaged in continuous studying of teachers' mathematics, in a way that is intimately connected with classroom teaching. Unfortunately, given how little preparation time teachers have, much of this has to happen at conferences and during summer institutes. On this page, I link to or reference lessons in teachers' mathematics which I have used with middle school and high school teachers. Most of the lessons are based on ideas that are accessible to students, though not at the same depth.

47. Homepage For New Math Teachers
Provides some good ideas for new math teachers.
http://people.clarityconnect.com/webpages/terri/terri.html
Welcome to Terri Husted's Homepage!
A Homepage for New ( And Not So New ) Math Teachers
This homepage was created to give new math teachers ideas and suggestions to help with their teaching. Even though I've been teaching for more than twenty years, I do not have all the answers. My first advice to anyone starting in teaching is to be careful of those who claim they know the perfect method of teaching. Teaching is an on-going learning experience. You will be challenged to use many approaches and methodologies. You must keep a balance between teaching skills, concepts and problem solving. Children learn mathematics in different ways and at different rates. What is often forgotten in math education is what is most important: You , the teacher . The way you present your lesson involves all of you and the connections you make with your students. Your honesty, your beliefs in what you do, the climate you create in your classroom, truly carry your lesson. These are the elements you bring into the classroom which are most remembered by your students. Also, when you take time to see math as your students see it, you will become a better math teacher. It is time in educational reform that we focus on the qualities of good teachers and not just good programs.

NEWS For immediate use April 12, 2000 No. 217 By DAVID WILLIAMSON
UNC-CH News Services CHAPEL HILL More than 10 years after becoming the first national teacher organization to release comprehensive educational standards for its subject area, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has done it again. The group unveiled its updated and expanded "Principles and Standards for School Mathematics" at a news conference in Chicago today (Wednesday, April 12). th grade around the country and make it better. "Now in much greater detail, the standards specify exactly what we think a good mathematics program should be for students at each grade level," Malloy said. "Over the past decade we’ve learned a lot about what works and what does not, and the document reflects what we’ve learned." Malloy, assistant professor of education at UNC-CH, serves on the board of directors of the council and helped write the section dealing with math education in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. "One of the standards is that mathematics should be connected, that subjects such as algebra should not be taught in isolation from other subjects like geometry," she said. "One way of solving a math problem might be more appropriate than another, but other representations might be helpful and should be considered as well."

Winter 1995
CONTENTS
Introduction:Meeting the Challenge of Assessment Revisiting Assessment in the Workplace Maine's History of Systemic Change Issues in Assessment of Native Language Literacy ... Book Review: Whole Language for Adults I n November, 1993, several Boston area math teachers met in a pub and agreed to use assessment as a way to focus our interest in and discussions of math. This happy hour group included adult educators from community-based programs serving the usual variety of speakers of other languages: low, intermediate, and advanced readers, work force and GED-bound students, as well as students seeking high school diplomas through external and alternative diploma programs.
Assessment is important to us because many of us have changed our classes according to the suggestions originally published in their standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The main ideas form the basis for the Massachusetts ABE Math Standards and for the frameworks for teaching mathematics which the Massachusetts Department of Education has sponsored. All these documents emphasize making connections to real life, promoting problem solving, and communication in the classroom.

MathStar Summer Institute benefits middle school math teachers
The MathStar Summer Institute at New Mexico State University will bring together 25 to 30 middle school math teachers from eight schools throughout the state July 9-13 to improve their mathematics teaching skills. MathStar New Mexico is the New Mexico portion of a $5 million, three-state, five-year federal grant in its second year, funded through the Star Schools Program at the U. S. Department of Education, Office of Educational Research and Improvement. California and Colorado are also participants. Schools participating in New Mexico are Chaparral Middle School, Clayton Junior High, Des Moines Elementary, Gadsden Middle School, Harrison Middle School in Albuquerque, House Municipal Schools, Lynn Middle School in Las Cruces and Santa Teresa Middle School. MathStar New Mexico director Karin Wiburg said the Summer Institute will show teachers appropriate use of graphing calculators, how to write better math lessons, how to use computer math programs and spreadsheets and how to use World Wide Web resources, among other things. “The teachers feel like they’re getting a lot out of this,” Wiburg said. “After last year’s institute, they began using more technology in the classroom and implementing new teaching strategies. We also chat weekly online with the teachers and visit the schools for one-day training sessions about every two months.”
