MATH
SEE A SPECIAL INTEGRATED MATH/ART LESSON IN THE TOPIC OF THE WEEK SECTION
SEASONAL NECKTIES USING PATTERN BLOCKS AND VARIOUS MEDIA
GRADES: K-5
The main objective of this lesson is to have the student demonstrate making a pattern using pattern blocks. After exploring with various ABAB and ABCABC patterns the student can then move to constructing their own pattern using symbols or pictures.
MATERIALS:
  • Pattern Blocks (enough for children to work in pairs or groups)
  • 3 inch strips of white paper
  • yarn
  • scissors
  • crayons or markers
METHOD:
  • Dump a generous supply of pattern blocks in front of your pair or small group. Set timer for 5-10 minutes and allow students to experiment with blocks.
  • After timer rings, have all students push manipulatives back into the middle of the table. Ask them to construct a pattern using two types of blocks. Discuss results in large group and questioning how the student derived the answer.
  • Ask students to construct pattern using three different types of blocks. Discuss various responses and inquire as to reasoning.
  • Ask students to construct a pattern using as many types of blocks as they wish. This assesses your various levels. Discuss results and reasoning.

Welcome to the Beginner's Guide to Aeronautics Beginner's Guide to Aerodynamics How do airplanes work? Why does a wing change shape on takeoff and landing? Beginner's Guide to Propulsion How do jet engines work? Why are there different kinds of jet engines? Beginner's Guide to Model Rockets The Beginner's Guide to Model Rockets will show you the basic math and physics that govern the design and flight of model rockets. Beginner's Guide to Kites The Beginner's Guide to Kites will show you the basic math and physics that govern the design and flight of kites. I n the 21st century, airplanes are a normal part of everyday life. We see them fly over, or read about them, or see them on television. Most of us have traveled on an airplane, or we know someone who has. Do you ever wonder how airplanes fly? What causes the lift that gets the airplane off the runway? How does a pilot control the movement of the airplane? Why are the engines on an airliner different from the engines on a fighter plane? How does aerodynamics affect the flight of a model rocket or a kite? The information at this site is provided by the NASA Glennn Learning Technologies Project (LTP) to give you a better understanding of how aircraft work. Each page at this site describes a single topic related to basic airplane aerodynamics, propulsion, model rockets, and kites. At the top of each page is a slide that illustrates the topic. The slide is accompanied by a caption that explains what the slide is all about and goes into some detail about the physics and math related to the subject of the slide. There are often links and references to other slides and sites where you can find additional information.

Welcome to the Beginner's Guide to Aerodynamics What is aerodynamics? The word comes from two Greek words: aerios , concerning the air, and dynamis , meaning powerful. Aerodynamics is the study of forces and the resulting motion of objects through the air. Judging from the story of Daedalus and Icarus, humans have been interested in aerodynamics and flying for thousands of years, although flying in a heavier-than-airmachine has been possible only in the last hundred years. Aerodynamics affects the motion of a large airliner, a model rocket, a beach ball thrown near the shore, or a kite flying high overhead. The curveball thrown by big league baseball pitchers gets its curve from aerodynamics. At this Web site you can study aerodynamics at your own pace and to your own level of interest. Some of the topics included are: Newton's basic equations of motion ; the motion of a free falling object, that neglects the effects of aerodynamics; the terminal velocity of a falling object subject to both weight and
