Tutorial software enhances students' problem-solving skills Will software ever replace human tutors? Probably not, but it can enhance student learning and guide self-paced study. It isn't getting the amount of hype Windows 95 did, but a tutorial software program under development at WCER is nonetheless helping students think and work more productively. Tutorials in Problem Solving (TiPS) helps math students develop their problem-solving skills as they set up and work through mathematics word problems. Like a human tutor, it monitors their problem-solving strategies, offers advice, and tracks their progress. UW-Madison Education Professor Sharon Derry and her team are studying the interaction between students and human tutors in order to build software that behaves like effective human tutors behave. No matter what line of work we're in, we continually solve problems, little and big. Many adults have difficulty solving complex arithmetic word problems. But when such problems were solved incorrectly in real life, waste and damage can result: if complex medical dosages are calculated incorrectly, for example, a patient can die. Knowing how to break down complicated problems into manageable chunks really helps. That's what TiPS teaches students to do. Derry colleague Don Wortham says the relative difficulty of math story problems depends more on the semantic structures in the problemsdealing with the words and constructing conceptual models of situationsthan on the mathematical calculations involved. How do expert problem solvers do it? They use mental constructs, called "schemas," that help them properly analyze and set up problems.

Tutors provide remedial instruction for a child who is struggling with a subject area. It is important that you ask a potential tutor about her/his training and experience in the subject. If traditional instructional methods have not worked for your child, would a teacher who primarily uses those methods be your best investment for your child's success? The research shows that teachers who use Multi-Sensory strategies for math are more successful with all core math skills. Below are tutors from Stratford Friends School who use these techniques. Federal Work-Study
    : Overview
Recent assessments have revealed that our nation's young students are not reading at acceptable levels illiteracy threatens the academic success of children across the country. The 2000 Reading Assessment results of fourth-grade reading reveals that reading levels overall have not changed and the reading scores of the highest-scoring students have risen while the scores of the lowest-scoring students have declined.
To bridge this reading gap, the U.S. Department of Education issued a waiver to the Federal Work-Study (FWS) regulations that allows the Federal Government to pay 100% of an eligible FWS student's wages if he or she serves as a reading tutor to pre-school through elementary age children or serves in a family literacy programs.
We face a similar crisis in mathematics education. While the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century indicate that our students must master advanced mathematical skills to go onto college and have promising careers, today's students are not achieving at high levels. In order to help provide additional learning opportunities and personal attention to math students, the U.S. Department of Education expanded the existing FWS waiver allowing the Federal Government to pay 100% of an eligible FWS student's wages if he or she serves as a math tutor to elementary through ninth grades students.
Thousands of colleges and universities across the nation employed over 30,000 FWS students as reading and math tutors in the 1999-2000 school year, giving students an opportunity to serve their communities they might otherwise not have. These students worked one-on-one with children or with families to help strengthen the reading and math skills of our nation's children.

America Counts and Adult Literacy Information America Counts is a new initiative from the Federal Government to improve the math skills of children. It works the same as America Reads, with schools, after-school programs, libraries, etc., taking part as tutoring sites, though America Counts is for children preschool through the 9th grade. America Reads is for children preschool through the 6th grade. If you are interested in tutoring math and/or reading, look for a tutoring position on the jobs page and see if the site is also hiring math tutors. As a tutor for America Counts, you will be required to attend an Overview Training Session and one of the Reflection Sessions Other training and support will be provided by the site that has hired you as a math tutor. You may tutor both reading and math if you choose. If you decide to do so, you should consider a site that is looking for reading and math tutors rather than splitting your time between two different places. If interested, please complete the form below and submit it online. We will contact you personally with more information about the program. Please visit the Federal Government's Department of Education web site
