Mathematics
There are three components to the math program:  computational skills, conceptual topics, and applications, including extensions (recreational math):
COMPUTATIONAL SKILLS
The approach that is required is one that can be individually tailored to each student's needs, using a text at a grade level that ensures a challenge, but also a high degree of success along the way.
CONCEPTUAL SKILLS
These are mathematical topics which do not necessarily require sequential introduction, because most concepts can be learned without prerequisite steps.  The areas of instruction here are geometry, measurement, number theory, and more recently, data management, which is more than graphing, as in the past. At the time that children first enter school, they do not have a well defined sense of time and space.  Although their concepts in these areas are functions of their stage of development, as they become able to understand them, these concepts can be taught.  In many ways, they must experience the notions, because they do not have the level of abstract thinking necessary to understand them on paper as an adult would.  The use of manipulative materials, while required for some early stages of understanding, have been overstated.  For example, once a child is able to count symbols on paper, such as stars or flowers, it should not be necessary to use three-dimensional counters.

Graded Assignment 4: The Collaborative Project
Overview: You are part of a team of Waterloo students assigned to prepare a case study in an area of concern to a group of stakeholders. Your team will define that audience and your objectives, carry out a program of research, discuss the results of that research, offer recommendations or solutions, and perhaps implement some of those recommendations in the form of the top level of a Web site or a pamphlet. You must follow a series of steps before you can prepare the final report and present it before an audience of stakeholders, among whom are your peers, your teachers, and other interested parties from the local community. Research: The kind of research you perform depends on the nature of your case study. But you must use at least three different types of research: Library The Web Surveys (you’ll have a chance to administer these to your peers in the lecture) Interviews (you can arrange these yourself, or if the same individuals are identified by several groups, we will arrange the interview for you) Empirical (i.e., observational or experimental; for example, an analysis of a computer program)

Here are all kinds of math links to games and stories and puzzles and biographies and jokes and magic and ideas and even movies.
Dear Visitor, The Internet is full of information, fun, magic, jokes, puzzles, data, and inspiration about mathematics. Many organizations and many ordinary people (like me) who love the subject spend time trying to make math fun for kids, teachers, and adults who either love math or have math phobias. Some sites interact with you. That is, they ask you to do something, and then do something in return. For example, they may let you play a game where you move a player and then the Web page moves a player in response. We've spent some time wandering around the Web, and have collected a few sites we think you will like. If you'd like to comment on any of these links, or if you can suggest other links which particularly interest you, I'd be delighted to hear from you.
Sincerely,
P.S. Clicking on any of these links will open a new browser window for you. Just close the new window by clicking the X in the upper right corner, when you've finished reading about the link.
