(I Kings, 7:23) Skeptics say that if this pool was 10 across and 30 around, then G-d doesn't seem to know the value of "pi." Either that, or the pool was not exactly circular. One friend retorted (this was in e-mail) that approximate measurements are enough for some purposes. But my friend said that G-d certainly ought to know the exact facts, and this proved that the Bible was written by men, not by G-d. Can you help him, and me? (By the way, he liked your explanation concerning the evidence for the Exodus.) Thanks. Dear M. Stolzenbach, First let's define our terms: Pie is the relationship of one's belly button to one's belt buckle.

Religous Connections by Kristina Fisher-Roberts
The Solomon Society is a traditional values group that believe the Bible has a different value for Pi than the traditional value. Most people in the scientific and mathematic communities believes Pi to be a transcendental, infinite number, 3.14159. . . However Leonard Lee Lawson, a member of the Solomon Society claims that "The Bible very clearly says in 1Kings 7:23 that the alter font of Solomon's Temple was ten cubits across and thirty cubits in diameter, and that it was round in compass. The Bible does not say that the font was thirty something cubits. Plain reading says thirty-cubits. Period." Mr. Lawson claims that based on Biblical facts the value of pi is exactly three. This is one of the main beliefs of the Solomon Society.
In Huntsville, Alabama, Lawson and members of the Solomon Society lobbied the Alabama state Legislature to change the value of pi to three (3) exactly. There was much support during a letter writing campaign by members of the Solomon Society. Due to pressure from the Solomon Society, Governor Guy Hunt, signed Pi as "3" into law. Instead of 3.14, on Wednesday, February 27th, 2002.
Professionals in the mathematics community feel much like Kim Johansen, a mathematician at the University Of Alabama who say that pi is a universal constant and cannot arbitrarily be changed by lawmakers. She further explained that pi is defined in mathematics as 3.14159, plus as many more digits as you have time to calculate.

Pi story
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. NASA engineers and mathematicians in this high-tech city are stunned and infuriated after the Alabama state legistature narrowly passed a law yesterday redefining pi, a mathematical constant used in the aerospace industry. The bill to change the value of pi to exactly three was introduced without fanfare by Leonard Lee Lawson (R, Crossville), and rapidly gained support after a letter-writing campaign by members of the Solomon Society, a traditional values group. Governor Guy Hunt says he will sign it into law on Wednesday. The law took the state's engineering community by surprise. "It would have been nice if they had consulted with someone who actually uses pi," said Marshall Bergman, a manager at the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization. According to Bergman, pi is a Greek letter that signifies the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. It is often used by engineers to calculate missile trajectories. Prof. Kim Johanson, a mathematician from University of Alabama, said that pi is a universal constant, and cannot arbitrarily be changed by lawmakers. Johanson explained that pi is an irrational number, which means that it has an infinite number of digits after the decimal point and can never be known exactly. Nevertheless, she said, pi is precisly defined by mathematics to be "3.14159, plus as many more digits as you have time to calculate". "I think that it is the mathematicians that are being irrational, and it is time for them to admit it," said Lawson. "The Bible very clearly says in I Kings 7:23 that the alter font of Solomon's Temple was ten cubits across and thirty cubits in diameter, and that it was round in compass."

The Value of "pi" Sara Trechter Department of English, CSU-Chico Abstract Plurality in the Mississippi Valley Siouan languages is typically marked with a clitic in post-verbal position (Lakhota - pi ). Although this morpheme has been traditionally translated as a distributive plural in association with either the agent or patient, its meaning is actually comitative, meaning that that action of the verb to which the morpheme attaches was accomplished "with others." This is exemplified by the fact that in Lakhota, in a few rare instances, the topical agent of the sentence is singular and the verb is "plural": winyan ni-thawa kin phehinzhi-la thi el a- wicha -khiyagla-pe-lo Your wife (with others) took them to Little Light-haired-one's place. This paper traces the functional development of a reconstructed verb meaning "to be with" in the MVS languages as it grammaticizes in different discourse constructions to indicate verbal plurals and or topic. As the comitative is used regularly with singular arguments such as in the Dhegiha languages, it comes to indicate the topic status of the singular agent or patient.

Pi Gets In Your Eye
Does the Bible Give a Wrong Value for Pi? James Patrick Holding
1 Kings 7:23 And he made a molten sea, ten cubits from the one brim to the other: it was round all about, and his height was five cubits: and a line of thirty cubits did compass it round about. (see also 2 Chron. 4:2) This is a very old chestnut that complains that the measurements given for the circular bath do not give a proper value for pi. There are a couple of answers to this, one of which we give a link to below, and which is better than the one I have here. The more common answer is that these verses give an estimate of pi that is rounded to the nearest full digit. Interestingly it was a skeptic who, in the 153rd issue of the Biblical Errancy newsletter, issued this criticism: I can say that it must be 31.4159265...cubits, not 31.4. We all make an agreement to round to a certain place. Remembering that the circumference was not necessarily a calculation, but an observation, probably done by using a forearm as a ruler, it would be logical to round to the nearest cubit. Any diameter from 9.5 cubits to 10.5 cubits would round to 10 cubits.... The reportage would be correct, rounded to the nearest unit.... in the days when basins were measured by forearms, the nearest cubit was as good reporting as you could get, and in the case of the above-mentioned possible "precise" measurements, can indeed be an accurate representation of what was there. McKinsey's reply to this was quite interesting. We'll consider it in pieces:

New theory on the value of `pi'
M.K.Anil MANGALORE, June 15 A TEACHER of mathematics from Mangalore is said to have made a discovery which, if accepted by the international community of mathematicians, could make a difference in a variety of calculations ranging from missile technology to computations of a less violent nature. According to Stephen Vadakkan, the nephew of a `social reformer' from Thrissur in Kerala who has studied in the US and London and worked for the Kuwait Air Force before returning to India in 1990, the correct value of `pi' is not the conventional 22/7 or 3.1415926... but 18/the square root of 33 or 3.1333978... The new method worked out by Vadakkan is said to be based on constant circular speed pendulums and substitutes time for space to prove that circumference/diameter is constant, thus paving the way for calculating a `more accurate' value for pi. Starting with the theorem that trisecting an angle of 60 degrees using only a straight edge and compass is impossible, Vadakkan first sets out to disprove what has become a part of mathematical common sense. ``One of the theorems in Frederick Stevenson's book `Exploring Real Numbers' posts the impossibility of trisection with a straight edge and compass. But actually it is surprisingly easy if one uses speed and time to measure distance and not the conventional method of space and length,'' says Vadakkan. ``It is something that can be done by a student in Class VIII.''

Nobody would even think it had this third interpretation ... IT ALSO HAS A FOURTH ONE (cf. Vedic Mathematics) It also contains a generating formula for obtaining even higher decimal places !!!!! Well, no idea how that works, but do we have reason to not believe it ?!?

Evolve Pi
This is a very simple exercise that will allow you to see how genetic algorithms work. Try and evolve pi! This exercise obviously assumes you have read the basic Generation5 GA essays
Outline
While this sounds rather complicated it is very easy. Create a population of floating point numbers and run it through a fitness function. Then average all the good values together to create the next generation. Keep on going until you're satified with the results.
Guidelines
This project is very open because there are many ways to do it. For example, the fitness function could return the error between a fixed value of pi and the value passed to it: This would only evolve a value as good as the constant defined. You could use data that relates a radius of a circle with the circumference. Again, that would only evolve pi as good as defined in the data. Try different methods. For a high-precision evaluation, I used Texas Instruments' Derive 5 to generate pi to 100 decimal places: Again, you can keep evolving until you reach a certain precision, x-number of iterations, or you can keep it going infinitely until you otherwise specify.
