Nobel Prize in Mathematics
A trick question! There is no Nobel prize in mathematics. Why not? That question has created numerous stories, myths, and anecdotes. The most popular is that Nobel's wife had an affair with a mathematician, usually said to be Mittag-Leffler, and in revenge Nobel refused to endow one of his prizes in mathematics. Too bad for this story that Nobel was a life-long bachelor! The other common story is that Mittag-Leffler, the leading Swedish mathematician of Nobel's time, antagonized Nobel and so Nobel gave no prize in mathematics to prevent Mittag-Leffler from becoming a winner. This story is also suspect, however, because Nobel and Mittag-Leffler had almost no contact with each other. Most likely Nobel simply never gave any thought to including mathematics among his list of prize areas.

Great Mathematicians and Their Achievements
Mathematics exist before 1900 BC, in great civilizations everywhere, including China, India, Babylon etc. However, the first record of Mathematical manuscripts is found in Egypt, namely, the Moscow Papyrus and the Rhind Papyrus. In the 'Achievement' column below, the notations are as follows: AG = Analytic Geometry Al = Algebra Ar = Arithmetic As = Astronomy C = Calculus DE = Differential Equation FM = Foundation of Mathematics G = Geometry GT = Group Theory L = Logic M = Mechanics N = Number Theory P = Probability RM = Recreational Mathematics S = Statistic ST = Set Theory T = Topology The list here is not exhaustive. The mathematicians listed here are either pioneers in various fields of Mathematics, or those who have contributed to almost all fields, or those who have settled unsolved problems. http://www.cah.utexas.edu/collectioncomponents/math.html
The Archives of American Mathematics (AAM) is one of the collection components available at the Center for American History's Research and Collections Division . AAM is dedicated to preserving the records of American mathematicians and American mathematical organizations for use by mathematicians, historians, and others interested in the history and development of American mathematics and science. Although mathematics has had an immense influence on American culture, science, and technology, the materials available for the study of its history are meager, highly dispersed, and often in danger of destruction. Until the creation of the Archives of American Mathematics in 1975, there was no archival repository dedicated to preserving the historically valuable records of American mathematics. The Archives of American Mathematics thus serves as a national repository for the papers of mathematicians and the records of mathematical organizations for which appropriate local preservation is not available. The Archives of American Mathematics began with the acquisition and preservation of the papers of noted University of Texas mathematicians Robert Lee Moore and H. S. Vandiver. R. L. Wilder, one of Moore's early doctoral students, envisioned the Moore Papers as the nucleus of a broader collection. Several of Moore's students and colleagues in the UT Math Department subsequently donated their papers and, as the collection grew, papers of several prominent American mathematicians were added. In 1978, the

...Notices: You mentioned earlier your involvement in education. What is the AMS role in K-12 education? Bass This is an area in which the AMS did not organizationally decide to move but in some sense was gradually moved into it by external developments, developments that reflect the broader growth of our professional community. Historically, mathematicians' involvement in K-12 education was usually seen as episodic. Certain mathematicians chose to turn their interests and reflections in those directions, just as mathematicians might become interested in philosophy or poetry or music. Interest in education was not treated as a movement in the field, but as something congenial with it. Those efforts were hospitably received in the mathematical community and were treated as a wholesome part of the general culture, but not as central to it. The situation is quite different now, but not because of change of individual interest or concern. A lot of it has to do with the whole interlocking dynamics of expansion of the field...

AFRICAN-AMERICAN MATHEMATICIANS CONFERENCE BUILDS COMMUNITY "The goal of the conference was to provide a sense of community for African American math students and support their success academically and otherwise," Boisen said. "I believe that the conference was a success," said student Shawn Bruce, who organized the details of the conference. "I was pleased with the overall turnout for a first time event. I believe that we accomplished our goal and achieved our purpose. Hopefully, we will not only enhance and maintain our new community, but we will also be a blessing and help to others." The AAAM visits different places each year to meet with successful mathematicians in various fields, Boisen said. These mathematicians help students broaden their understanding of the career opportunities in mathematics and see that teaching is not the only thing a math major can do, he said. Graduate students work with members of the organization, building a bond of trust, Boisen said. Issues that could affect performance and retention are identified early instead of too late, he said.
