Australian Mathematics Foundation
The Australian Mathematics Foundation (AMF) is one of the original two sub-Trusts of the Australian Mathematics Trust (there is now a third sub-Trust). It was the genesis of the Australian Mathematics Trust, and dates back to 11 April 1976, when a committee to run a mathematics competition in Canberra was formed at a meeting at the home of Peter O'Halloran . In 1978 the committee became the management committee of the Australian Mathematics Competition and was later incorporated as Australian Mathematics Foundation Limited. In 1992 it combined with the Australian Mathematical Olympiad Committee to become a sub-Trust of the new Australian Mathematics Trust. The AMF Committee has historically comprised staff of the University of Canberra, but through its network of national and state directors, members of the problems committee and moderators it draws on a wide national and in fact international volunteer force. The main activity of the AMF is the Australian Mathematics Competition for the Westpac Awards (AMC), which has been sponsored since its inception in 1978 by the Westpac Banking Corporation , one of Australia's major banks.

"Psst, c'mere," said the shifty-eyed man wearing a long black trenchcoat, as he beckoned me off the rainy street into a damp dark alley. I followed.
"What are you selling?"
I asked.
"Geometrical algebra drugs."
"Huh!?"
"Geometry drugs. Ya got your uppers, your downers, your sidewaysers, your inside-outers..."
"Stop right there," I interrupted.
"I've never heard of inside- outers."
"Oh, man, you'll love 'em. Makes you feel like M.C. ever-lovin' Escher on a particularly weird day."
"Go on..." "OK, your inside-outers, your arbitrary bilinear mappers, and here, heh, here are the best ones," he said, pulling out a large clear bottle of orange pills. "What are those, then?" I asked. "Givens transformers. They'll rotate you about more planes than you even knew existed." "Sounds gross. What about those bilinear mappers?" "There's a whole variety of them. Here's one you'll love they call it 'One Over Z' on the street. Take one of these little bad boys and you'll be on speaking terms with the Point at Infinity."

Guide for Graduate Schools in Applied Mathematics
Advice on Schools
  • For doctoral work, the school you go to is less important than your advisor. That is not to say that the school is irrelevant, but unlike undergraduate education, graduate education has a huge aspect of one-on-one education, primarily between a student and an advisor. So, the first step in evaluating a school is to determine if there is one (and ideally more than one) faculty member who does work of interest and of quality. Go to the library and read some of the primary journals Find out who are the main people in the field and consider going to their schools.- by Dr. M.Trick
  • Ranking, in addition to being statistically impossible, distorts the entire admissions process. Every student is an individual with individual needs in regard to friends, campus atmosphere, faculty attention, and available facilities. What is a great college for one student can be a disaster for another. There are intensely unhappy people at top schools who thought, as seniors, that their life would be complete if only they got admitted into school X. But school X was a bad fit, and the admissions committee didn't realize it. So think about what you want out of your education, and study the school information.- by Peterson's
  • The strength of the American system of higher education lies in the diversity of institutions available to students, from small colleges to large research universities, publics to privates, liberal arts colleges to church-affiliated schools. Each has something to offer, and no standardized lists of "best colleges" or "best graduate schools" can begin to do justice to what is best for a given student. -

INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS AND MATHEMATICS IN THE DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
Attia A. Ashour Mathematics enjoys the same popularity as other disciplines, (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences, etc.) with neither the governments of the developing countries nor the International Organizations whose aim is to help these countries. However, certain aspects of mathematics or related to it, such as Computer Science, Information Theory, Statistics & Probability, Modelling, etc., have been established as worthy of support. It is not my intention here to enlarge on this or to give reasons for it. What I want to emphasize is that there is a need to recognize the importance of mathematics at large in its own right and to provide institutes of mathematics and mathematicians in the developing countries with the help needed to continue and improve their work and in particular to develop the "critical mass" which does not yet exist in some of these countries. Regional Unions and Societies of Mathematics also exist. Examples of these are the African Mathematical Union, the Latin American Mathematical Society and the South East Asian Mathematical Society. These organizations help mathematicians in the respective regions to hold meetings and to publish regional journals. Again, UNESCO plays an important role in funding the activities of these organizations.

It is an article of faith that asian Americans are born mathematiciansor scientists, but are unable to master English even if they try.
    http://www.colorado.edu/ftep/diversity/div06.html
The Nature and Problem of Stereotypes
    Professor William Wei
    Department of History
    University of Colorado at Boulder
Perhaps the most insidious aspect of stereotypes is that they weaken our ability to think critically and serve as a major source of disinformation about others, especially women and minorities. Instead of challenging the stereotypes that we encounter in our daily lives, we accept them as representing reality and erroneously equate them with valid generalizations based on accurate data about a group of people. In actuality, they are nothing more than standardized mental pictures reflecting an oversimplified opinion and have little or no ascertainable basis in fact. They project unidimensional caricatures, masking the diversity that is an inherent feature of every group of people. Only Euro-Americans are depicted as representing the entire spectrum of humanity. Stereotypes, however, do accurately reflect one social reality: unequal relations in society and in the world. Using Asians and Asian Americans as illustrations, I would like to suggest a way for you and your students to deal with the problem of stereotypes. But first, a cautionary note is in order: The issue is not whether specific stereotypes are politically correct or incorrect, negative or positive, but rather that they are, by definition, basically false and misleading. A case in point is Asian Americans as a "model minority," a positive stereotype that emerged during the 1960s and is used to make invidious comparisons with other people of color. It embodies a "cultural determinist" argument, that Asian Americans have overcome extraordinary adversities through the strength of their cultural heritage.

Course Descriptions Faculty Overview In a world of increasing technological complexity, knowledge of mathematics is the gateway to the pursuit of many fields. Mathematics has long been the language of choice for expressing complex relationships and describing complicated patterns and processes. It is now true that many fields, in addition to mathematics and the sciences, rely on this in a fundamental way. What was formerly "abstract" mathematics to many has become the concrete stuff of everyday life. "The unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics" manifests itself today in such familiar things as CAT scans, compact discs, satellite communications, and computer animation. These were all rendered possible by new discoveries made by mathematicians, within the last fifty years. Even the efficient operation of our financial markets is based, in part, on relatively recent theorems of mathematical analysis and probability theory. Faculty The faculty of the Department of Mathematics is committed to excellence in teaching and research. Its members carry out high-level research on diverse problems in algebra, analysis, topology, probability, and statistics, mathematical physics, and the history of the discipline. Their research has been widely published in prestigious research journals and is recognized internationally. Members of the department have won Sloan fellowships, Humboldt fellowships, and other scholarly honors, as well as numerous research grants. Many are currently supported by grants from the

    Assignment Schedule
    Reading:
Each day you will have a reading assignment to prepare. There will be class discussion on the reading assignment and, often, a quiz based on the reading. I know students don't particularly like reading quizzes, but former students have attested that it is a good way to make sure students actually do it. So, as a teacher, I have a responsibility to continue the practice. :-) Reports: Also, you will each make two class presentations on specific mathematicians. To make it memorable for the class, you will want to emphasize the story (history) as well as the mathematics. I have tried to coordinate the reports with the reading so that the mathematicians discussed immediately precede the reading assignment that refers to them. In order to make your report, you will want to note what, if any, information about your mathematicians can be found in the textbooks. Then you will augment that with information you get from the library or the internet. Your report should be sure to note facts and stories that are NOT found in the texts. What things should be included in your report:
    • Birth and death dates, and other significant dates (but don't overdo it! Maybe 6 dates max.)
