The Continuing Silence
An Interview with Pierre Cartier, June 18, 1997

Marjorie Senechal
If you are a mathematician working today, you have almost certainly been influenced by Bourbaki, at least in style and spirit, and perhaps to a greater extent than you realize. But if you are a student, you may never have heard of it, him, them. What or who is, or was, Bourbaki? Check as many as apply . Bourbaki is, or was, as the case may be:
  • the discoverer (or inventor, if you prefer) of the notion of a mathematical structure;
  • one of the great abstractionist movements of the twentieth century;
  • a small but enormously influential community of mathematicians;
  • a collective that hasn't published for fifteen years.
The answer is: all of the above , and they are four closely woven strands of an important chapter in intellectual history. Is it time to write that chapter? Has the story of Bourbaki come to an end? Bourbaki was born in Paris in 1935 when a small group of mathematicians at the Ecole Normale Superieure, dissatisfied with the courses they were teaching, decided to reformulate them. Most mathematicians have had that experience at one time or another, but the scope of Bourbaki's dissatisfaction grew quickly and without bound. By 1939, writing as an anonymous collective under the pseudonym Nicolas Bourbaki, it began to publish a series of books intended to transform the theory and practice of mathematics itself. From its beginning, Bourbaki was a fervent believer in the unity and universality of mathematics, and dedicated itself to demonstrating both by recasting all of mathematics into a unified whole. Its goals were total formalization and perfect rigor. In the post-war years, Bourbaki metamorphosed from rebel to establishment.

Armand Borel
is professor emeritus at the School of Mathematics, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, NJ.
This article is an outgrowth of a lecture given at the University of Bochum, Germany, October 1995, in a Colloquium in honor of R. Remmert, and at the International Center for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy, September 1996. With permission of the author, it is being published concurrently in the
Notices and in the Mitteilungen der Deutsche Mathematiker-Veremigung.
The choice of dates is dictated by personal circumstances: they roughly bound the period in which I had inside knowledge of the work of Bourbaki, first through informal contacts with several members, then as a member for twenty years, until the mandatory retirement at fifty. Being based largely on personal recollections, my account is frankly subjective. Of course, I checked my memories against the available documentation, but the latter is limited in some ways: not much of the discussions about orientation and general goals has been recorded. Another member might present a different picture.

    Bourbaki decided not to use categories in Elements de Mathematique (accents omitted because they can be disfigured in transit), but his Chapitre IV, Structures, of Theorie des Ensembles, published in 1957, has a decidedly categorical flavor. He defines applications universelles (universal maps) in full generality, and in Section 3.2, he gives a criterion for the existence of universal maps which, rewritten in categorical terms, becomes Freyd's GAFT, with the usual proof. Question: add Bourbaki's chapter to the Incunabula? Oswald Wyler

    "The army is ready; not a gaiter button is lacking"
    , declared Marshal Leboeuf, Napoleon III's Minister of War, when the funds needed for mobilization were being voted.
    Rarely has such an ill-considered remark been made: the French army, poorly equipped, inadequately trained and, above all, incompetently led, was soon to suffer a succession of crushing defeats. As soon as the first clashes took place in August 1870 it was forced to abandon Alsace and Lorraine, save for a few strongholds Strasbourg, Sélestat, Neuf-Brisach, Metz and Belfort all of which remained under siege. On 2 September Napoleon III capitulated at Sedan with 80,000 men, bringing down the Second Empire, and the Prussians marched on Paris.
    The Republic proclaimed on 4 September inherited a desperate situation: Paris was under siege from 18 September and the Government of National Defence was blockaded in the capital together with its best troops; Strasbourg, in flames, was forced to surrender on 28 September; and on 27 October Marshal Bazaine capitulated at Metz with 150,000 men, enabling the Prussians to reinforce the siege of Paris, where the hungry population soon began to suffer the effects of winter cold [1].

Januar 2000
    Sehr geehrter Herr Schultheiss

    Weak completeness of the Bourbaki quasi-uniformity
    The concept of semicompleteness (weaker than half-completeness) is defined for the Bourbaki quasi-uniformity of the hyperspace of a quasi-uniform space. It is proved that the Bourbaki quasi-uniformity is semicomplete in the space of nonempty sets of a quasi-uniform space (X, U ) if and only if each stable filter on (X, U ) has a cluster point in (X, U ). As a consequence the space of nonempty sets of a quasi-pseudometric space is semicomplete if and only if the space itself is half-complete. It is also given a characterization of semicompleteness of the space of nonempty U -compact sets of a quasi-uniform space (X, U ) which extends the well known Zenor-Morita theorem. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 54E15, 54E35, 54B20

    Nicolas Bourbaki
    An important movement in twentieth-century mathematics was generated by the polycephalic mathematician Nicolas Bourbaki who published, beginning in 1939, a series of books which presented advanced mathematics in a highly abstract format. Much folklore has grown up around him, so this is an interesting topic for investigation. You are encouraged to read some of his works, either in the original French or in English translation. One novelty of the works are the historical notes that are attached. Read some of them and discuss what you think of them as history. These notes have been collected into a single volume entitled Elements of the History of Mathematics , translated from the French by John Meldrum , Springer, c1994. An interesting side project would be to compare portions of this to what you can find in the standard histories of mathematics on the same topic.
