48. Astrotale - Why An Argument Between Two Great Mathematicians Kept The English Fr
Why an argument between two great mathematicians kept the english from understandingand utilizing calculus for two decades.

W HY AN A RGUMENT B ETWEEN T WO G REAT M ATHEMATICIANS K EPT THE E NGLISH F ROM U NDERSTANDING AND U TILIZING C ALCULUS FOR T WO D ECADES T he argument began with Newton discovering calculus at least 3 years before Leibniz independently developed it. Because Newton was loathe to publish his works (he hated disputes and disagreements), Newton's papers appeared after Leibniz. Newton's distaste for argument did not prevent him from claiming priority over Leibniz and so ensued a battle between the 2 mathematicians that made them both look like fools in front of their peers. Because Newton's explication of calculus was much more difficult to understand, Englishmen loyal to Newton as an English mathematician caused calculus to be restricted to only those who could understand Newton's notations and methods.
In our last Newton episode we'll find out why Newton invented the reflecting telescope and probably died of mercury poisoning.

An adventure into the world of Chaos, Fractals, and Art
Wenjun Sun
Prologue: Jurassic Park
A monologue with dinosaur-fan boys.
In the far distance, a Tyrannosaurus Rex roars and many Apatosaurs trumpet ... Chaos reigns Isla Nublar and Nature finally finds its way. Ian Malcolm has been right all along: the Jurassic Park is a nonlinear dynamic system, which is intrinsically unpredictable and unstable, and its safety is totally at the mercy of a handful of computers. A little greediness by the computer programmer Nedry (Nerdy?) has sent the whole park to its doom. Now the mighty and efficient flesh-crunching machines are set free, and in their eyes, their creators are but bunches of proteins and nutrients ...
Did everybody see Steven Spielberg's mega-hit movie Jurassic Park? You didn't? Well, you should. Oh, you did? Good boy. Did you like the dinosaurs? Good, Steven is awfully good at making those huge monsters and giving people a few delightful scares, and he always makes big bucks out of it. Do you remember Ian Malcolm in the movie? No? Oh, it is that rock-star-like guy with black shirt, black trousers, black socks, black sneakers, black sun-glasses, black hairs ... black everything. Oh, not an African American, he's white.

Fermat needs you! The magazine is intended so that their readers be also their writers, so if you know about a subject where you may have something to tell, Write to Fermat The language in which the jobs are written does not matter, yet I prefer catalan, spanish or english. I do not intend to translate the articles, because of a simple reason of work, so maybe english would be the best choice to make it possible to reach a wider range of people. I would have liked to edit the magazine if HTML format, but the fact that the most used navigators do not support the mathematical formulae Tags (although there is the draft of a standard) forces the use of other formats. The alternative is the PostScript format, generated by composition systems such as TeX , in UNIX systems (the TeX system is used by the American Mathematical Society and has proved to be a dependable standard in mathematical articles composition). For those who depend on a operating system

    History of C.I.M.E. Foundation
Clicca qui per la versione italiana C.I.M.E. means Centro Internazionale Matematico Estivo, that is, International Mathematical Summer Center. Conceived in the early fifties, it was born in 1954 and made welcome by the world mathematical community where it remains, in good health and spirit, having reached by now the already respectable age of 48. Such an event is the origin of the present report devoted of the fathers, to the long rank of supporters from all countries, who made its survival and growth possible, and, especially, to younger people from the mathematical research world who may not yet know much about C.I.M.E. or never have heard of it at all. Younger people may not even know, but surely can imagine, that the latest world war, among the other sad heritage, obviously let scientific groups and individuals isolated. The necessity of re-establishing the flow of information and of restarting connections was keenly felt in all countries. In Italy this need was made worse by a pre-war period which was unfavourable for political reasons to the exchange of ideas at a normal level. This means that only few outstanding persons and their achievements were known abroad and few fortunate people did approximately know what was going on beyond the boundaries of the country in the various fields of scientific research. It took about five years after the end of the war before the italian mathematicians as a community could face and try to solve the problem.
