Nicolas Bourbaki
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Nicolas Bourbaki " is the pseudonym under which a group of 20th-century mathematicians wrote a series of books of exposition of modern advanced mathematics . This group tried to substantiate mathematics based on the set theory . The group was founded by Szolem Mandelbrojt and by a small fist of other carefree young French mathematicians, who tried to raise French mathematics. It was a plain answer to the work of Jules-Henri Poincaré

Days-off for (almost) everybody : In addition to vacations, the French have 11 days of holidays (" ") a year ; most companies are closed and public services (museums, etc..) are minimal . By Matt Ong To the modern mathematician, Joseph Fourier (1768-1830) is remembered as the man who brought mathematical rigor to that branch of analysis that examines the possibility of representing functions by trigonometric series, for it is exactly in the precision of the words "representing a function" that Fourier Analysis has earned its distinction as a fundamental subject in mathematics. The concept of the Fourier Series and its continuous analogue, the Fourier Transform, compelled mathematicians of the 19th Century to reevaluate their concept of a function and functional convergence, forcing them to abandon restrictive graphical or algebraic intuition and take up analytic formulations instead. This theoretical creation transcended the original, physically intuitive purpose of Fourier Analysis, and instead represented smooth, periodic functions in terms of sines and cosines. Physics had long been an integral part of the French science and mathematics school curriculum since the middle of the 18th century. Important advances in mechanics, electromagnetism, fluid dynamics, and astronomy prompted a parallel development in mathematical tools which eventually evolved into disciplines in their own right. Indeed, it was through his considerations of heat transfer that Fourier formulated his ideas on the trigonometric representation of functions.

Mathematicians and Other Oddities of Nature
Banach-Tarski Paradox : In 1924, two Polish mathematicians, Stefan Banach and Alfred Tarski, proved a rather peculiar result: you could decompose a sphere (or any polyhedral figure) into a finite number of pieces, then from those pieces, reconstruct a similar sphere of larger volume. Since this would imply that all volumes are the same, this upset a number of people. Cantor, Georg : German mathematician who first examined the notion of infinities and showed that not all infinities are equal: some are more equal then others. Cardano, Giralamo : Italian mathematician, best known for his Ars Magna , a compendium of algebra published in 1545 (right on the heels of Vesalius De Fabrica Corporis Humanis and Copernicus' De Revolutionibus : the 1540s were a banner decade for scientific advance.) Cardano is best known for having published in Ars Magna Niccolo Tartaglia's rule for solving cubic equations , much to Tartaglia's annoyance. (Cardano gave Tartaglia full credit, though not very loudly...in those days, practitioners of mathematics got their fame by being able to solve problems no one else could, and if every Tomas, Riccardo, and Enrico could solve a cubic, Niccolo's reputation would be worthless). Tartaglia spent the rest of his life trying to discredit Cardano. Cubic Equations Galois and Abel were able to show that solutions to the fifth or higher degree equations were impossible. Solving the cubic was fraught with

He was a banker’s son and therefore a member of the minor gentry, though one with more exposure to matters of practical commerce than most of his class. Sometimes sickly, he was tutored and haphazardly schooled through his childhood. In the process he learned subjects outside of the standard classical curriculum, including accountancy and navigation.

MIT, French researchers find different kinds of math use different parts of the brain

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. A study by researchers from France and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, published in today's (May 6) issue of the journal Science, indicates that learning the multiplication table may be more akin to memorizing a laundry list than exercising mathematical skills. Meanwhile, learning to approximate how numbers relate to each other seems to be tied to intuition about space. The results may have implications for how math is taught, particularly to bilingual children. The research suggests that performing arithmetic may require bilingual individuals to mentally translate a problem before solving it, slowing down their response time. Through separate studies involving behavioral experiments and brain-imaging techniques, the researchers found that a distinctly different part of the brain is used to come up with an exact sum, such as 54 plus 78, than to estimate which of two numbers is closer to the right answer. Developing the latter skill may be more important for budding mathematicians. For years, mathematicians, including Einstein, have said that they rely more on mental signs and images than words. The results reported by Stanislas Dehaene of Service Hospitalier Frederic Joliot in France and Elizabeth S. Spelke, professor of brain and cognitive sciences at MIT, show that exact arithmetic uses a part of the brain usually active during verbal memory tasks.

The fact that eighty countries of the world have found that the Jesuit impact on these countries deserves commemorative stamps is an emphatic endorsement of world-wide interest in Jesuits. A few copies of the hundreds of stamps concerning Jesuit apostolates have been selected and displayed on these pages. They are arranged in eight different categories with as many stamps on a page as could reasonably fit. The narratives for the stamps derive from sources such as The Jesuit Annuarium (Yearbook) and Bangert's History of the Society of Jesus.
Some Jesuits fall into several categories so are mentioned more than once as long as there were different stamps for the different categories. Unfortunately many Jesuits who deserve mention were never honored by stamps. So, while this collection is not an exhaustive history of the Jesuit Society, it does indicate the world-wide interest in Jesuits. Pozzo's celebrated fresco on the ceiling of St. Ignatius provides a fitting introduction. (Joseph F. MacDonnell, S.J.)
