    Gay Mathematicians
Internet information on gay mathematicians I was always fascinated by couples sharing intellectual or artistic pursuits. I do not think that straight couples sharing such pursuits are more common than gay couples doing the same, although I am not aware of any systematic studies of this phenomenon. Math is my primary interest, and thus I am particularly interested in couples doing math together. Fortunately, we have remarkable examples of such couples, living now or in the recent past, in United States and in Soviet Union. I do not think that people who are alive should be mentioned in such context on the Web, unless they explicitly want it or unless they provide this kind of information on their own Web pages. However, we have a remarkable example of a couple of gay mathematicians who lived together in the recent past in the Soviet Union to the extent it was possible in the society where being gay was a criminal offense, and people convicted of it often never came back. These mathematicians are Andrei Nikolaevich Kolmogorov, who is considered to be the mathematician number one in this century by many people, and Pavel Sergeevich Aleksandrov, a well known topologist. Their mathematical achievements were recognized by their fellow mathematicians and by the Soviet officialdom - both were high-ranking members of the Soviet Academy of Sciences.

A couple of years ago I spent a few days to russify MiKTeX 1.11. To do that, one had to download a lot of files, unzip them, apply some patches, put files in the correct places, edit some of them, run TeX a few times and so on. After I did that, I collected all the necessary files in a package, rumik.zip (886 KB), which was very easy to use - just downoad it, unzip in the localtexmf directory, and run initexmf dump. Since the installation procedure was so easy, Rumik became popular very fast, especially among mathematicians, i.e. people who need TeX the most. Later versions of MiKTeX contain all the necessary fonts, corrected babel, hyphenation patterns etc., so now Rumik became unnecessary. Also, because of the changing of the directory structure of MiKTeX, Rumik doesn't work with MiKTeX 2.1. Many people emailed me asking what to do. Fortunately, one can make MiKTeX 2.1 able to produce Russian text, without Rumik, in a few simple steps. Here they are.

PREFACE     ‘Russian for Mathematicians’ is a complex textbook for those beginning to study the Russian language from the basic level, but it will also be useful for those already able to read mathematical texts and is intended  to improve their knowledge. The manual is intended for self-study. It can also be used by the teacher for class work with students of the mathematical sciences. The main aim of the textbook is to introduce lexical, grammatical rules and constructions of the style frequent in mathematical texts.
The manual includes an introductory phonetical course and a main course. In the introductory course the students learn letters and corresponding sounds of the Russian language, lexics and grammar . All grammatical material is carefully selected and reflects the main features of the system of the Russian language. At the end of every lesson the rules of reading Greek and Latin letters, mathematical expressions and parenthetical constructions of mathematical texts are given. In the textbook special rubrics are included introducing various aspects of life in Russia, the most common abbreviations and peculiarities of Russian epistolary genre.
The sections of the second course are organized according to the main mathematical sciences and begin with main vocabulary followed by an extract from a textbook or a manual on this speciality.

includes, among other interesting lists, a list of the ten
largest known of the 38 known Mersenne primes. It notes
