Last December, the ICTP hosted the 8th General Meeting of European Women in Mathematics. The gathering attracted more than 100 women from 30 different countries worldwide. Emilia Mezzetti, who served as the chief organizer, examines the plight of women within the profession today. Women Mathematicians
Count on Brighter Future F
eminine mathematics? The term sounds preposterous. As every school child knows two plus two is four. From the simplest calculations to the most complex equations, the unbending rules of mathematics conform to laws of nature that reach well beyond differences in gender. Gender nonetheless has played an important role in mathematics when it comes to some critical factorsmost notably, hiring and promotions. And that's why women have begun to join together in organizations like European Women in Mathematics (EWM). Their goal is to recalibrate the profession's disturbing demographics so that university mathematics departments become as gender-free as the research findings of their faculty members. These numbers may surprise you. In Denmark, just 2 percent of all mathematicians teaching in universities are women; in Germany, it's 3 percent; in the United Kingdom, 7 percent. Among Mediterranean countries, the situation is better but by no means satisfactory. In Greece, nearly a quarter of all math professors are women; in Italy, it's 35 percent. Across Europe, when it comes to math professors, only Portugal has a 50-50 gender split. And this dismal picture becomes even worse when calculating the number of women serving as department heads or deans.

It provides the student with valuable information about men and women that hae researched and solved the numerous problems. This site includes photographs, references, crossword puzzle's, and an interactive quiz. This ia a great site for students to see that women and men played an interesting role in discoveries in math science and technology.

Teri Perl has been writing about women mathematicians as shown by her Math Equals: Biographies of Women Mathematicians (Addison-Wesley, 1978). She is united with Charlene Morrow, who runs the Summer Math program for high school women at Mount Holyoke College. Most of the thirty-six biographers have ties to the Summer Math program and/or have research interests in mathematics education for females. The result is a biographical dictionary cum recruitment tool to interest women in mathematics. The dictionary is not meant to be comprehensive, but rather inclusive. There are 59 entries, which include many, but not all, of the classic women mathematicians. The collection also includes biographies of minority women, mathematicians whose main interest is in educational research rather than mathematical research, young mathematicians who are still making their mark in the field, and mathematicians with non-traditional interests, especially applied and interdisciplinary interests.

Women in Mathematics The Mathematics and Statistics Department at Acadia has witnessed high numbers of female majors since the early 1990's, and expects this trend to continue in the future. The department's small size, friendly atmosphere, and experienced faculty have proved to be a successful combination in changing what was once a largely male discipline. In 1996, in fact, five of Acadia's six honours mathematics graduates were female, and their story was featured in an issue of In House , Acadia's official campus newsletter.

    Introduction
If you have spent any time studying the history of mathematics, you will notice that the individuals mentioned in the history books are predominantly of the male gender. Women have certainly contributed to the development of the field of mathematics, but their contributions, at least until the 20th century, have not been noted. As we enter the 21st century, it is important to heighten our awareness of this social condition as we continue to encourage people of both genders to study and make advances in the field of mathematics.
In order to heighten your awareness of the role women have played in the development of the field of mathematics, your group will prepare a newspaper article which will include some general information about the history of mathematics, a chronology of major events, biographical information about at least two 20th century, two pre 20th century woman mathematicians, a success story from a math teacher at your school and conclude with a forecast for women's involvement in the future of mathematics as we enter the 21st century.
    The Quest
After completing this assignment, you will be more aware of the history of mathematics in general and the role that women have played in its development.

    History of Mathematics
    The Contributions of Women
    Written by Julie Boyd
    (University of South Australia, 1996)
Mathematicians in general are not a well known group. However, women mathematicians are even less well known. It is possible to read most histories of mathematics and find little or no mention of women mathematicians, even of the few there were. This article is therefore intended to trace the impact some of these women have had on the development of mathematics. However, firstly, why were there so few women mathematicians? It appears that the reason for this was that in almost any age women faced many barriers, which men of far less ability did not have to face. For women, talents alone were not sufficient criteria for success in mathematics. The woman also needed to have drive and determination, not only to ignore role stereotypes but also to overcome the restrictions placed on their education. It was not until these barriers were crossed that women were able to develop and enjoy their talents (Perl 1978 and Osen 1990). The women that will be discussed in this article all came from either academic or wealthy upper-class families. Some of the women were from the French and English aristocracy and so had the benefits of outstanding mathematicians as teachers. This was important as education for girls was until very recently nonexistent or very much restricted, as there was great prejudice against women studying subjects such as mathematics or science. These areas were considered to be male fields. However, even when women did receive the equivalent of a secondary education, colleges were closed to them, as it was believed that women were made for childrearing and that "brain work" may conflict with this function (Perl 1978).
