There are currently over 130 biographical essays available, from Maria Gaetana Agnesi to Lai-Sang Young, many of which contain photos and references for both print and electronic sources. The essays are accessible by browsing either the alphabetical or chronological index. Notable Women In Mathematics:
A Biographical Dictionary
edited by Charlene Morrow
and Teri Perl
Reviewed by Libby Krussel
Until recently, Women of Mathematics: A Biobibliographic Sourcebook , 1987, edited by Louise Grinstein and Paul Campbell (also from Greenwood Press), and Teri Perl's Women, Numbers and Dreams were practically the only two reference works on women in mathematics. This new book complements the other two by emphasizing the human element. The result is a valuable book for and about women in mathematics at a level suitable for high school and early college students that celebrates the diversity present in the community of women mathematicians. The goal of the editors, stated on page xv, is admirable: to encourage more girls into mathematics and to spark enthusiasm for the field in all students. To this end, they have collected biographical information on 59 women mathematicians, spanning the last 2000 years. The emphasis, however, is on contemporary women mathematicians: of the 59, 40 are currently living and working in the field of mathematics or mathematics education in the US or in Europe. Much of this material comes from personal interviews, and thus goes beyond each woman's mathematics to discuss the person behind the mathematics. The essays are a delight to read. Each gives a very human and encompassing picture of the whole woman as mathematician, teacher, mother, wife or partner. Each one illustrates the path followed, not just professionally but also personally. Each woman's mathematical contributions are explained in terms that are easily understandable by a high school or college student interested in what a mathematics career may be like. This book provides an excellent complement and companion volume to the recently reviewed

"A number of us feel this is a misrepresentation" Wednesday March 13, 2002
The Guardian
Like all other women mathematicians, I was really pleased and absolutely thrilled to learn that Susan Howson got the Adams Prize. In the article about her achievement, it was written: "This sets her apart from most of the other top women mathematicians in the UK, who are almost entirely concentrated in applied maths or statistics." A number of us feel this is a misrepresentation, and unnecessarily stereotypes the few women who do mathematics in the UK. As a common or garden mathematical physicist, so therefore neither "top" nor "pure", I think I can be presumed to be unbiased on this and have, therefore, taken on the task to refute this misrepresentation. There are only about 10 women mathematics professors in the UK, and already two very distinguished pure mathematicians among them come to mind. Caroline Series, at Warwick, has been a professor for very many years. She is the holder of a five-year EPSRC senior research fellowship, which is only awarded to a few people, and is giving the Forder lectures in New Zealand next year, which is a "distinguished" thing to do. Frances Kirwan, at Oxford, will be giving one of the 20 plenary talks at the International Congress of Mathematicians this summer in Beijing - which is a meeting for all mathematicians in the world.

WHERE: College of Business Administration Building, 12th and R Streets Lincoln, Neb., Feb. 6, 2003The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will host the Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Mathematics Feb. 7 through 9. Some 200 undergraduate women from around the nation and two from Ireland will travel to Lincoln to meet other young women in mathematics. Sixty undergraduates will present their own mathematical research projects. The program also includes information on careers using mathematics and choosing a graduate school. "There are other activities for women held on a smaller scale, but this is the nation's only major undergraduate conference specifically devoted to women in math," said Judy Walker, event organizer and UNL associate professor of mathematics and statistics. In its fifth year, the event is sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the UNL College of Arts and Sciences , the National Science Foundation and the National Security Agency.
