Shmuel Yosef Agnon (1888-1970)
Agnon is a central figure in modern Hebrew fiction. He wrote many novels and short stories about major contemporary spiritual concerns. He won the Israel Prize for Literature in 1954 and 1958 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1966, the first time that honor was given to a Hebrew writer.
Agnon was a devout Jew who spent much of his life in Israel. He was extremely dedicated to vegetarianism and wove vegetarian themes into many of his stories. His great sensitivity to all creatures is indicated in the following excerpt from his speech upon receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature:
Lest I slight any creature, I must also mention the domestic animals, the beasts, and the birds from whom I have learned. Job said long ago (35:11) "Who teacheth us more than than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?"

In it, he displays the skill of a consummate novelist with the sensibilities of a poet. For those who are familiar with Hebrew poetry, particularly Biblical poetry, "Only Yesterday" conveys in English the rhythms and structure of classic Hebrew poetry while transmitting a sensual and, ultimately, tragic story. It is really not comparable to Singer; it is something far above and beyond Singer's work. Agree and Disagree As a lover of Yiddish writers I disagree with the reviewer who compared S.Y. Agnon to Isaac Bashevis Singer. I enjoyed Only Yesterday but don't think it compares at all to anything written by Singer. I found many passages in this book seemingly pointless and rambling, the grammar, in parts, was simplistic as was the style. This could have been the "fault" of the translators. I did enjoy parts of the books and wanted the whole book to be as good as the best parts but it wasn't the case. If you love books written by Yiddish authors I wholeheartedly recommend reading Only Yesterday by S.Y. Agnon but I urge you to read everything by Isaac Bashevis Singer.

  • AGNON, Shmuel Yosef [submitted by Norbert Porile] Shmuel Yosef Agnon was the first Hebrew language writer to win the Nobel prize in literature. He was born in Buchach in 1888. His father, whose family name was Czaczkes, was a fur merchant and a follower of the Hasidic rebbe of Chortkov. Agnon grew up under a strong Hasidic and rabbinical influence and received private schooling in Yiddish and Hebrew. He started writing in these two languages before he was 10 years old and published his first poem at age 15. He published numerous short stories and poems in his early years. In 1907 he left Buchach for Palestine and lived in both Jaffa and Jerusalem. He first used the pseudonym "Agnon" in Ha-Omer , his first story published in Palestine, and adopted it as his family name in 1924. Once he left Buchach he stopped writing in Yiddish and wrote mostly in Hebrew. He spent the years from 1913 to 1924 in Germany, where he edited the Juedischer Verlag.
