Ausstellung an der Universität zu Köln Die Universität zu Köln lädt ein zur Eröffnung der Ausstellung "Von Spanischen Fliegen, Verbandsexamen und Dien-Synthesen - Kurt Alder (1902-1958): Forscher und Nobelpreisträger, Hochschullehrer und Direktor des Chemischen Instituts" am Montag, dem 14. Oktober 2002, um 18.00 Uhr
in der Galerie der Universität (Hauptgebäude)
Albertus-Magnus-Platz, 50931 Köln-Lindenthal Nach der Begrüßung der Gäste durch Rektor Professor Dr. Tassilo Küpper wird Professorin Dr. Margit Szöllösi-Janze aus dem Historischen Seminar einen Eröffnungsvortrag zum Thema "Universität und Wissenschaft im Dritten Reich - eine Problemskizze" halten. Anlaß für die Ausstellung, die durch das Universitätsarchiv konzipiert wurde, ist der Geburtstag Kurt Alders, der sich in diesem Jahr am 10. Juli zum hundertsten Mal jährte. Die Ausstellung ist wird vom 14. bis zum 31. Oktober 2002 zu sehen sein. Kurt Alder, der spätere Kölner Lehrstuhlinhaber und Chemie-Nobelpreisträger des Jahres 1950, wurde am 10. Juli 1902 im oberschlesischen Königshütte (heute Chorzów) geboren. Er studierte von 1922 bis 1927 in Berlin und Kiel Chemie und promovierte bei Otto Diels. Schon seine Doktorarbeit führte ihn auf das Gebiet, das seine wissenschaftliche Tätigkeit maßgeblich prägte: die Erforschung der Dien-Synthese. Bei dieser Reaktionsform verbindet sich - teilweise bei Raumtemperatur - ein Stoff, der eine Vierer-Kohlenstoffkette mit zwei Doppelbindungen enthält (Dien) mit einem "Dienophil", das zwei durch Doppelbindung verknüpfte Kohlenstoffatome enthalten muß, zu einem Sechser-Kohlenstoffring. Die Bedeutung dieser Reaktion erweist sich bis heute in der Herstellung von Kunststoffen oder Pestiziden, aber auch in der Erdöl-Chemie.
