O norte-americano Jack Kilby, da Texas Instruments, ficará com metade do prêmio por sua contribuição na invenção dos circuitos integrados (ou chips ). A outra metade será dividida pelo norte-americano Herbert Kroemer, da Universidade de Santa Barbara, Califórnia (Estados Unidos), e pelo bielo-russo Zhores Alferov, do Instituto Físico-Técnico Ioffe de São Petersburgo, por desenvolver estruturas semicondutoras usadas em equipamentos óptico-eletrônicos. As descobertas feitas pelos laureados permitiram que um sistema de informação se articulasse em torno de dois eixos básicos: rapidez - transmissão de grande volume de informação em pouco tempo - e miniaturização - adaptação dos equipamentos a escritórios, casas, maletas e até bolsos. O desenvolvimento do aparato que caracteriza hoje esse sistema - como computadores cada vez mais velozes e menores que transmitem dados por meio de fibras ópticas na Internet ou telefones móveis interligados por satélites - deve muito às pesquisas dos premiados.

They were Dr. Zhores I. Alferov who is currently residing in St. Petersburg together with Herbert Kroemer from the Californian university and Jack S. Kilby from Texas Instruments. Mr. Jack S. Kilby has received the premium award for the development of microchips, which are the basis in the creation of modern processors. In all devices - from home appliances to personal computers - the chips were developed based on Kilby’s principles. Dr. Zhores I. Alferov and Mr. Herbert Kroemer have both received the premium awards for the development of semi-conductor elements used in super-fast computers. Their researches have lead to the development of optic-fiber communication devices. Dr.Alferov gave a short speech after receiving the highly claim Nobel prize, in his speech the 70 years old prize winner mentioned that, "It is, undoubtedly, the symbol of the international recognition of achievement of our Soviet and Russian physics ". Dr. Alferov is the Director of Ioffe physico-technical Institute; he also heads the St. Petersburg branch of Russian Academy of Science, and the deputy of State Parliament.
