Ignarro, a professor in the department of molecular and medical pharmacology at the UCLA School of Medicine, was one of three recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine brings to 33 the number of UC faculty who have won Nobel prizes. No other public university system worldwide has won more Nobel Prizes than the University of California. "The work of Professor Ignarro and his colleagues has opened fields of inquiry that have important implications for improving health and saving lives around the world," said Richard C. Atkinson, UC President. "A distinguished teacher, Professor Ignarro has now won the highest honor a researcher can receive. I am pleased to congratulate him on behalf of the university and to say how proud we are to share in the reflected glow of his accomplishment." Ignarro's award is the ninth physiology or medicine Nobel won by a UC faculty member. Last year, UCSF's Stanley Prusiner won the Nobel Prize for his work on prions.

CHARACTERISTICS OF TYPICAL PLASMAS
Plasmas consist of freely moving charged particles, i.e., electrons and ions. Formed at high temperatures when electrons are stripped from neutral atoms, plasmas are common in nature. For instance, stars are predominantly plasma. Plasmas are the "Fourth State of Matter" because of their unique physical properties, distinct from solids, liquids and gases.   • Mental health and depression UC professor awarded Nobel Prize in chemistry Walter Kohn of the University of California at Santa Barbara and John Pople of Northwestern University are winners of the 1998 Nobel Prize in chemistry. They will share $978,000. "The laureates have each made pioneering contributions in developing methods that can be used for theoretical studies of the properties of molecules and the chemical processes in which they are involved," said the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on making the announcement Tuesday. Kohn, a physicist, was cited for his development of density-functional theory the basis of many aspects of computational chemistry, in which the geometrical structure of molecules can be mapped and reactions predicted. Pople, a mathematician, received the award for his development of computational methods in quantum chemistry. His 1970 computer program, Gaussian, allows chemists to apply quantum calculations in making rapid, reasonably accurate estimates of molecular behavior. Improvements in the Gaussian program, the Nobel committee said, have been so dramatic that it "is now used by thousands of chemists in universities and commercial companies the world over." Kohn was the second UC professor this week to receive a Nobel Prize Louis Ignarro, a professor in the department of molecular and medical pharmacology at UCLA's School of Medicine, was co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The number of UC faculty who have received the Nobel Prize now stands at 34. No other public university system worldwide has won more Nobel prizes than the University of California.

    Ampère, André Marie
    Ampère, a teacher at Paris, has his permanent place in the history of science because it was his name that was given to the unit by which we measure electrical current. He had, of course, an interest in electricity; in addition, Ampère made similar investigations as did Avogadro into the nature of matter in its gaseous state.
    Alfven, Hannes Olof Gosta
    What I know of Alfven is that he was born in Sweden in 1908; and, while at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, in 1970, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics "for fundamental work and discoveries in magneto-hydrodynamics with fruitful applications in different parts of plasma physics." I first bumped into Alfven when I picked up a small paperback book of his, which I very much enjoyed, Atom, Man, and the Universe, The Long Chain of Complications (San Francisco: Freeman, 1969). It was written simply and plainly for a general audience, and enables us "to view ourselves both as a part of the atomic microcosm and as part of the universe that dwarfs us."
