Nobel Lecture, Oslo, December 10, 2001 Your Majesties, Your Royal Highnesses, Excellencies,
Members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today's real borders are not between nations, but between powerful and powerless, free and fettered, privileged and humiliated. Today, no walls can separate humanitarian or human rights crises in one part of the world from national security crises in another.
Scientists tell us that the world of nature is so small and interdependent that a butterfly flapping its wings in the Amazon rainforest can generate a violent storm on the other side of the earth. This principle is known as the "Butterfly Effect." Today, we realize, perhaps more than ever, that the world of human activity also has its own "Butterfly Effect" – for better or for worse.
Ladies and Gentlemen

Secretary-General Voices Concern at Statements on Syria
14 April Secretary-General Kofi Annan issued a statement this evening, in which he voiced his concern that recent statements directed at Syria should not contribute to a wider destabilization in a region already affected heavily by the war in Iraq. He welcomes recent clarifications in this regard, and reiterates his strongly held view that any claim of threats to international peace and security should be addressed in conformity with the provisions of the UN Charter.

Secretary-General Encourages UN Work with Regional Groups
11 April Secretary-General Kofi Annan addressed the Security Council's meeting with six regional organizations, telling them, "The feeling of global insecurity has seldom, if ever, been greater than it is today." He went on to say, "Equally, there has never been a more keenly felt desire among peoples and nations for a peace and security framework based firmly on the international rule of law," and he encouraged partnership between the United Nations and regional organizations to that end.

U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan Also Annan: Ghana's global diplomat OSLO, Norway (CNN) The Nobel Peace Prize for 2001 has been awarded jointly to the United Nations and its Secretary-General, Kofi Annan. The Norwegian Nobel Committee, based in Oslo, said the centenary award had been given to the U.N. and 63-year-old Annan for their work to build peace throughout the world. Annan said the news was "wonderful" and a great recognition for the world body and its staff. "At the same time it is a great responsibility at such difficult moment but reinforces us in pursuing the search for peace," he said. The committee said Annan had brought "new life" to the U.N. and had fought for human rights and against AIDS and international terrorism. With more than 50,000 employees around the world, a New York headquarters, half a dozen regional branches worldwide and scores of field offices around the world, the U.N. was founded in 1945. It now has 189 governments as members. Annan, a native of Ghana, took office in 1997 and was easily elected to a second term in June, months before his first five-year term expired.

Photo by Donna Coveney The United Nations and its seventh secretary general, Sloan School alumnus Kofi Annan, were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize Friday (October 12) for striving to create "a better organized and more peaceful world" in the post cold-war era. The Norwegian Nobel Committee said, "The UN has in its history achieved many successes, and suffered many setbacks. Through this first Peace Prize to the UN as such, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes in its centenary year to proclaim that the only negotiable route to global peace and cooperation goes by way of the United Nations." Annan, 63, was appointed secretary general by the UN General Assembly in 1997 and elected to a second five-year term in June. An active alumnus, he received the SM in management in 1972 and has visited MIT several times in recent years. He delivered the

Eight Nobel Prize recipients with MIT connections won Nobel Prizes in five fields this weekmedicine, physics, chemistry, economics and peace. The Peace Prize award Friday to the United Nations and Kofi Annan (MIT S.M. 1972) capped a week in which a current professor, a former professor and six alumni shared the prestigious prizes. MIT President Charles M. Vest commented, "It is thrilling and absolutely extraordinary that eight people who have taught or studied at MIT are among the 13 Nobel Prize winners in physics, chemistry, biology, economics, and peace. This is testimony to the excellence of students and faculty who are attracted to MIT, and to our dedication to intense work in fields of fundamental importance. Among the winners I know personally, the quality and creativity of students at MIT is frequently cited as a great strength of MIT. "Looking at the history of the Nobel Prizes in recent years, it is noteworthy that in many fields, the basic research done early in an individual’s career, shortly after attaining a Ph.D., is the work that is rewarded years later with the Nobel Prize," Vest said.

The United Nations and its Secretary-General Kofi Annan were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday 12 October 2001 for ``their work for a better organized and more peaceful world.'' UN spokesman Fred Eckhard woke Annan and told him the news shortly after 5 am Friday morning. ``Since the end of the cold war, the UN has been able to move toward its full potential in the peace and security area,'' Eckhard said.
Nobel Peace Prize citation
``The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2001, in two equal portions, to the United Nations and to its Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, for their work for a better organised and more peaceful world. For one hundred years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to strengthen organised cooperation between states. The end of the Cold War has at last made it possible for the UN to perform more fully the part it was originally intended to play. Today the organisation is at the forefront of efforts to achieve peace and security in the world, and of the international mobilisation aimed at meeting the world's economic, social and environmental challenges. Kofi Annan has devoted almost his entire working life to the UN As Secretary-General, he has been preeminent in bringing new life to the organisation.

International Bulletin - December 2001
PPSEAWA wishes to recognize Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations upon being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The work of peace is ongoing and difficult. The untiring devotion to its end merits this award. Kofi Annan focused his global attention on human rights, poverty Africa's civil conflicts and the HIV/AIDS epidemic. He led U.N. organizational and peacekeeping reform. Now he and the United Nations have jointly received the world's top champion of peace award. As the Nobel tradition celebrates its 100th anniversary, none could be more deserving. A soft-spoken native of Ghana, Annan has been praised for his character, moral leadership and serene dignity. Yet his quiet leadership cannot be mistaken for passivity. He deftly leads an often contentious group of 189 member nations that, as the Nobel selection committee pointed out, can "hardly become more that its members permit". Annan argues forcefully that nations must not use sovereignty to hide their own human-rights sins. Though he is proud of his African roots, he has taken African leaders to task for continued civil wars and poor leadership in combating HIV/AIDS.

Kofi Annan Nobel Peace Prize 2001 Vienna, 12 October 2001/P/RE/17319c-is
In a statement issued today, the President of the International Progress Organization, Dr. Hans Koechler, welcomed the decision of the Nobel Committee in Oslo to award this year's Nobel Peace Prize to Kofi Annan, the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Dr. Koechler emphasized that the decision of the Nobel Committee highlights the importance of the United Nations for the preservation and restoration of international peace and security particularly at a time when the unilateral use of force is being propagated by powerful international actors. In his capacity as University Professor of Philosophy, the President of the International Progress Organization had submitted, in February 1998, Mr. Annan's nomination to the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament. (According to the Statute of the Nobel Foundation, professors of philosophy ex officio have the right of nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.)

Kofi Annan: Nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize
Vienna, 26 February 1998/MS/15826/c-is
Mr. Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his successful peace mission to Baghdad. Through his deep moral commitment and skillful diplomacy Mr. Annan has succeeded in averting major conflict and conflagration in the whole Middle East. By his action he helped re-establish the United Nations' credibility as a global organization that is committed to peace and human rights. The nomination of Mr. Annan has been submitted to the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament by the President of the International Progress Organization, Dr. Hans Koechler, in his capacity as University Professor of Philosophy. According to the Statute of the Nobel Foundation, professors of philosophy ex officio have the right of nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. In the nomination letter Mr. Annan's courageous action is hailed as a rare example of masterful diplomacy in a situation where war seemed almost inevitable. As the highest civil servant of the world, Kofi Annan perfectly understood the mechanisms of power politics in the Security Council. In spite of unilateral preparations of war by parties driven by "national interests," through his moral vision the Secretary-General of the United Nations was able to tame the war machinery of the most powerful member state of the Security Council for the sake of a negotiated settlement. By addressing the issue of UN sanctions, Mr. Annan has shown compassion for the suffering people of Iraq and has brought a moral dimension into the brute realities of power politics in the present international system.
