Nobel Peace Prize for 2001 to the United Nations and Kofi Annan
    A symbol of peace
"This man stands for peace just in his very being. The integrity and the moral authority is exactly the sort of leadership the world wants in a difficult era."
    By Christian Borch
It was with these words that the British ambassador to the United Nations expressed his reaction to the news that Kofi Annan had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2001. together with the organisation he leads. With few exceptions, the rest of the world reacted in the same way.
    Immediate trust
Kofi Annan is a quiet diplomat and a man of firm principle. He approaches the conflicting parties with respect and without criticism or condemnation and conducts negotiations behind closed doors. Co-workers say he wins almost immediate trust , not least because he treats all the parties involved as equals and has no preconveived notions.
He rarely takes the offensive in dealing with specific conflicts, but when he does, his reaction has a decisive influence. This was the case, for example, when he insisted that no government can cite the principle of national sovereignty in order to justify serious violations of human rights.
    Cross-cultural
Kofi Annan's manner and style of leadership are often described as a result of cross-cultural influences. He is the son of a Ghanian chieftain, was educated in Africa, Europe and the USA and has spent virtually all his working life serving the United Nations in various parts of the world.

The 63-year-old Ghanaian, who shared the prize with the UN, said: "It's a wonderful feeling, and a great encouragement for us and the organisation for the work we have done until now. "At the same time, it's a great responsibility at such a difficult moment, but it reinforces us in pursuing the search for peace."

MODULE 1 GLOBAL TRENDS AND CHALLENGES: HAS TERRORISM INTRODUCED A NEW ERA?
    INTRODUCTION:
The Executive Program focuses on strategic thinking, particularly in the Eurasian context. The word strategy is derived from strategia (the art of the general). In a narrow sense, it refers to the way military forces are used to achieve political objectives in time of war. More broadly, however, strategy is the art of distributing and applying national (and, increasingly, international) means to fulfill the goals and objectives of policy, in peace as well as war. Countries build strategies for responding to international, transnational, and domestic current realities, as well as strategies in anticipation of possible futures. International governmental and non-governmental organizations also build strategies for responding to these realities.

    New York, New York
    United States
Dear Secretary General, On the occasion of the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Drugs in New York on June 8-10, 1998, we seek your leadership in stimulating a frank and honest evaluation of global drug control efforts. We are all deeply concerned about the threat that drugs pose to our children, our fellow citizens and our societies. There is no choice but to work together, both within our countries and across borders, to reduce the harms associated with drugs. The United Nations has a legitimate and important role to play in this regard but only if it is willing to ask and address tough questions about the success or failure of its efforts. We believe that the global war on drugs is now causing more harm than drug abuse itself. Every decade the United Nations adopts new international conventions, focused largely on criminalization and punishment, that restrict the ability of individual nations to devise effective solutions to local drug problems. Every year governments enact more punitive and costly drug control measures. Every day politicians endorse harsher new drug war strategies.

    Kofi Annan Awarded Nobel Prize
The Nobel Committee award of the Peace Prize to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan blatantly disregards his role in creating a human rights nightmare for the people of Iraq. The UN's sanctions regime has proved to be a disaster for Iraq. Despite a stream of critical reports, international outcries, and the resignation of key UN officials, Kofi Annan has stood by the US in its determination to enforce sanctions against Iraq, regardless of the costs to its people.
With US support, Kofi Annan became Secretary General in 1997, just as the Oil-for-Food program was coming into effect. This complex bureaucratic scheme allows Iraq to sell oil per UN-approved contracts, but the money from oil sales is placed in an escrow fund beyond Iraq's control. Each request for expenditure must be approved by the UN 661 Committee, where veto power is held by the two nations currently at war with Iraq, the US and Britain. The US representative on this committee has exercised unbridled discretion to bar Iraq from importing billions of dollars of items needed to repair Iraq's war-torn society and to meet the essential needs of its people.

WCC congratulates Kofi Annan and UN on Nobel Peace Prize award
    (16 October 2001)
Following the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize award to the United Nations and to its Secretary-General, the World Council of Churches (WCC) on 16 October addressed a congratulatory letter to the organization and to its head. In the letter, addressed to Kofi Annan and to UN Staff Committee President Rosemarie Waters, the acting general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), Georges Lemopoulos, lauds Kofi Annan for his "wise leadership" and skills as a "global mediator, negotiator, peacemaker and guardian of the international rule of law". The letter of congratulations also thanks UN staff at all levels for their dedicated work and for their part "in seeking to embody and give life to the aspirations of the Peoples of the United Nations". The full text of the letter follows: "The World Council of Churches sends its hearty congratulations for the award to you of the Nobel Peace Prize for 2001. Mr Secretary-General, this prize justly recognizes the roles of global mediator, negotiator, peacemaker and guardian of the international rule of law that you have performed so brilliantly during your first term in office. Coming as it does when you have been elected to a new term of office, this award is a welcome reflection of the broad international support you have for the wise leadership you have provided as the leader of the United Nations.
