1. Yasser Arafat - Biography
Biographical information from the nobel eMuseum.
http://www.nobel.se/peace/laureates/1994/arafat-bio.html
Mohammed Abdel-Raouf Arafat As Qudwa al-Hussaeini was born on 24 August 1929 in Cairo , his father a textile merchant who was a Palestinian with some Egyptian ancestry, his mother from an old Palestinian family in Jerusalem. She died when Yasir, as he was called, was five years old, and he was sent to live with his maternal uncle in Jerusalem, the capital of Palestine, then under British rule, which the Palestinians were opposing. He has revealed little about his childhood, but one of his earliest memories is of British soldiers breaking into his uncle's house after midnight, beating members of the family and smashing furniture. After four years in Jerusalem, his father brought him back to Cairo, where an older sister took care of him and his siblings. Arafat never mentions his father, who was not close to his children. Arafat did not attend his father's funeral in 1952. In Cairo, before he was seventeen Arafat was smuggling arms to Palestine to be used against the British and the Jews. At nineteen, during the war between the Jews and the Arab states, Arafat left his studies at the University of Faud I (later Cairo University) to fight against the Jews in the Gaza area. The defeat of the Arabs and the establishment of the state of Israel left him in such despair that he applied for a visa to study at the University of Texas. Recovering his spirits and retaining his dream of an independent Palestinian homeland, he returned to Faud University to major in engineering but spent most of his time as leader of the Palestinian students.

It has been seven years since Yasser Arafat received the Nobel Peace Prize and in that time it has become abundantly clear that Mr. Arafat is far from the peacemaker that the world believed he would be. Israel made a fair, good faith offer to Mr. Arafat for a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; rather than accepting or making a counteroffer, Mr. Arafat answered with violence. His constant pledge to achieve a Peace of the Brave has proven to be mere words, belied by his failure and unwillingness to take a public stance against organizations committed to acts of terror. It is with these considerations in mind that we appeal to all people of morality and good faith to stand up and express their anger and disappointment in Mr. Arafat by calling for the revocation of his Nobel Peace Prize. Your signature below will be forwarded to the Nobel Committee with our collective demand that they revoke Yasser Arafat's Nobel Peace Prize.

Can it be Done? The Nobel Peace Prize has never been revoked. In fact, there are provisions in the Nobel Committee statutes that state unequivocally that the committee does not revoke prizes. Why then are we attempting to revoke Yasser Arafat's prize if it cannot be done? The answer is we believe that the Nobel Committee made an exception when bestowing the prize on Arafat in the first place. Alfred Nobel's will and the bylaws of the Nobel Commission clearly call for the Nobel Peace Prize to be granted as a reward for the accomplishments of an individual or group during the past year in making the world more peaceful. Mr. Nobel's will reads: "The whole of my remaining realizable estate shall be dealt with in the following way: the capital, invested in safe securities by my executors, shall constitute a fund, the interest on which shall be annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year... shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." In 1994, however, Mr. Nobel's wishes were not strictly followed. When Yasser Arafat received the reward, the Committee took the unusual step of granting the prize with the hope "that the award will serve as an encouragement to all the Israelis and Palestinians who are endeavoring to establish lasting peace in the region." YASSER ARAFAT Politician Name at birth: Mohammed Yasser Abdul-Ra'ouf Qudwa Al-Husseini An Arab, Yasser Arafat was among those Palestinians who resisted the creation of a Jewish state in 1948. During the 1950s and '60 Arafat led underground military operations as the leader of the guerilla group Al Fatah, and in 1969 he was named head of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). By 1974 he was recognized as the one legitimate spokesman for the Palestian people. The PLO's attacks on Jewish citizens gave Arafat a worldwide reputation as a terrorist leader, but in the 1980s he emerged as a statesman willing to use diplomacy. Secret meetings in Norway with Israeli leaders Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres in 1993 resulted in a peace agreement, and the three men shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994. In 1996 Arafat was elected president of the Palestinian National Authority.
Extra credit : Before the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, Jerusalem was part of Palestine, a region created by British mandate after World War I. Arafat's official biography lists his birthplace as Jerusalem, Palestine, but other sources list his birthplace as Cairo, Egypt.
Other prominent Middle East leaders include Ariel Sharon Saddam Hussein Benjamin Netanyahu and the late Anwar al-Sadat

Russian, Moscow based NGO "Right of Child" not a once protested the harassment of peaceful population, including children, in Chechnya perpetrated by Russian federal troops. We also expressed our unambiguous position protesting most inhumane politics of Miloshevich Govenment towards children of Moslem minority in Kosovo (Statement "Save Children in Kosovo", 1999 etc.). Now we feel morally obliged to appeal for observation of rights of children of Palestine Autonomy.
A week after September 11, speaking in the live broadcast of the "Voice of America" dedicated to observation of rights of children in connection with terrorist attack in the USA, I outlined that scenes of dancing cheerful Palestinian children celebrating these terrible acts of murder are not less horrible than pictures of falling buildings and perishing victims itself, and that we all must pay most serious attention to those adults who managed to maim the souls if these children.

Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat
As the leader of a stateless people, Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat has wandered from country to country. Yasser Arafat dreamed of creating a Palestinian state since he was a young man in Egypt smuggling guns into Palestine. Yet after six years as the president of the Palestinian Authority, an entity established as a step toward the goal of independence, Arafat has been unable to turn his dream into reality. To Palestinians, he is the symbol of their struggle for a homeland. Yet to Israelis, he is the symbol of the threat to destroy their homeland a man whose complicity has fostered an unparalleled wave of terror attacks against Israeli civilians. Arafat long has sought to portray himself through the struggles of his people. "I am part of my people," he has said. "I am one of the victims." In June, after more than a year-and-a-half of Arab-Israeli bloodshed, with Palestinians conducting a wave of suicide bombings and Israelis retaliating by laying siege to Arafat's compound in the West Bank, U.S. President George Bush urged the Palestinian people to elect new leaders not tainted by terrorism or corruption as a pre-requisite necessary to pave the way for a Palestinian state.

Why did Yasser Arafat get the Nobel Peace Prize?
At a ceremony in Oslo, Norway on December 10, 1994 Yasser Arafat, master terrorist, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The prize was awarded jointly to Arafat, Israel's Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres "for their efforts to create peace in the Middle East." The three were granted the prestigious prize, prematurely as it turned out, for their roles in the historic Oslo Accords signed the previous year and their committment to the Peace Process envisioned by the Accords. After generations of warfare and terrorism, it seemed peace was at hand. The decision to award Arafat the coveted Nobel Prize was based on the belief that he had renounced acts of terror and had become a sincere participant in a true peace process. The

What is the background of Yasser Arafat and the PLO?
Yasser Arafat On October 10, 1959, a group of about 20 Palestinians met in Kuwait and secretly formed Fatah. Fatah (or al-Fatah) is an acronym standing for Harakat Al-Tahrir Al-Watani Al-Filastini—the Movement for the National Liberation of Palestine. Yasser Arafat, who had been working as a construction engineer in Kuwait, soon emerged as the leader of Fatah. With Fatah, Arafat recurited terrorists and led fedayeen raids into Israeli territory. Among the offshoots of Fatah was the infamous "Black September" who murdered the Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics When the PLO was founded in 1964 , as an umbrella organization for various Arab terrorist factions, Fatah was the largest group. It was, and still is, the military arm of the PLO.

Revoke Arafat’s Nobel Peace Prize!
An online petition established to advocate the revocation of Yasser Arafat’s Nobel Peace Prize has now been signed by more than 370,000 concerned people throughout the world. The objective of the petition, located online at www.RevokethePrize.org and initiated in the summer of 2001, is to bring worldwide attention to Yasser Arafat’s continued failure to abide by his commitment to work with Israel to create a lasting peace in the Middle East. “Yasser Arafat was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with the hope that it would encourage him to negotiate further with Israel following the Oslo Peace Accords. Since that time, however, instead of honoring his commitment to work towards peace, he has demonstrated to the world his unwillingness to take the necessary steps to end the bloodshed and create a lasting peace in the Middle East,” said Jonathan Bendheim, one of the organizers of RevokethePrize.org. “Arafat’s continued failure to take these steps makes it clear the Nobel Committee’s well-intentioned aim to turn Arafat into a ‘Peacemaker’ has failed.” RevokethePrize.org was established by a group of friends living in the eastern United States, who share a desire to see Israeli-Palestinian conflict resolved peacefully. The site is completely self-funded and it not affiliated with any Jewish or non-Jewish organizations. Asked what the goal of the campaign was, Mr. Bendheim stated that “the symbolic effort to revoke the prize - even the discussion of it - will continue to focus the world’s attention on Mr. Arafat’s disregard of his commitment to peace. Arafat has shown time and time again that world pressure is one of the few things that move him to action; it is our sincere hope that this campaign will help to force Mr. Arafat to recognize that the world will only accept the use of negotiations, not terror, in working towards true lasting peace in the middle east.

Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor; REVOKE THE PEACE PRIZE
An Open Letter to the Nobel Committee We know that it is unprecedented for the Nobel Prize authorities to revoke an award. But the continued complicity in acts of barbaric slaughter by the recipient of a Nobel Peace Prize surely warrants an unprecedented sanction. In the name of peace true and enduring peace for all peoples of the Middle East we call upon the Nobel Prize Committee to reconsider its decision to award the Peace Prize to Yasser Arafat. Without rectification of this profound error, the search for peace in the Middle Eat will be doomed to failure. The initial decision to award Arafat with the coveted Nobel Prize was apparently based on the belief that Arafat had renounced acts of terror and had become a sincere participant in a true peace process. No doubt the Nobel authorities were assured of this by none other than Israeli leaders such as Shimon Peres and Yossi Beilin. Yet, in the months following the award, a mounting wave of compelling evidence so graphic and shocking that none can ignore it showed beyond a reasonable doubt that Arafat's pledge to renounce terrorism and devote himself to peace was an utter falsehood. The continued empowerment of an international criminal such as Arafat by the prestigious Nobel Prize Award is itself a significant obstacle to true peace in the Middle East and an intolerable perversion of the ideals and goals of those devoted to peace.
